I Can Taste Him On Your Lips

20

The days slowly rolled by, but before I realized it, it was already Halloween time. So humming to myself, I was walking around a Halloween store looking for a costume for me to wear while Jason and I passed out candy to the little kids of the neighborhood.

Skimming through various skimpy and revealing outfits, I finally fell upon a modest length patchwork dress from the movie Nightmare Before Christmas. Going through the sizes until I found one that would fit, I grabbed it and headed up to the cashier to check out.

I moved on from that store to one that sold candy to stock up before the kids would be ringing the doorbell non-stop in the night to come.

~~

Dress up in my outfit, wig, and makeup, I was sitting on the porch watching the kids as they walked around smiling and laughing to their hearts content. I spent most of the night passing out the candy alone, Jason was inside working on a project due to work the next day, to kids from the ages of barely one to even a few sixteen and seventeen year olds. I thought that was the oldest I was going to see.

That is until I heard a familiar voice yelling a few houses down.

“RIAN MOVE YOUR FAT ASS I WANT CANDY!” Jack screeched making mother’s cover their children’s ears while I only laughed.

It wasn’t long before they showed up at Peter and Isobel’s house only to skip it over and come right over to mine.

“You’re my new favorite person.” Jack giggled when he stopped in front of me, dressed in the costume of my character’s other half.

“Only Jack would dress up like Jack,” Zack muttered getting slapped by Jack dressed as Jack Skellington.

“AND WE CAN LIVE LIKE JACK AND SALLY IF WE WANT!” Jack sang while dropping down onto one knee in front of me, grabbing both of my hands in his while winking.

“Someone please control him,” I laughed pulling my hands back before giving him a piece of candy making him squeal and skip away. “Or that works too.”

“Alex, Alex, Alex, Alex…” Jack said, poking said person with every time he said their name.

“Yes pumpkin king?” Alex asked annoyed as he pushed Jack’s hand away.

“If she wasn’t married, you guys would make such a cute couple.” Jack said before running away laughing like a maniac while Alex chased him around threatening to shove candy up his ass.

“As you can see, we are the only sane ones in the band.” Rian said rolling his eyes.

“Yes, I can tell.” I laughed. “Would either of you like some candy?”

They both accepted and took a piece from the bowl I held out to them before saying goodbye so that they could go stop Jack and Alex from scarring any small children for life.

I just laughed as I watched them jog after their long gone friends, only to have the door open behind me a few seconds after they left.

“How’s it going?” Jason asked as he sat down next to me kissing the side of my wig, meaning it to be the side of my head, lightly.

“We’re almost out of candy,” I said shaking the barely full bowl as emphasis.

“Busy night it seems,” He said as he looked out at the slowly emptying street, sitting a few inches away from me on the cold concrete to the point where not even our legs were touching.

I just shrugged, putting the plastic bowl down between our knees one step down from the one that we were sitting on.

The silence between us was tense and awkward, the only sound being when a kid would come up for candy. With a sigh Jason stood up, going back into the house without another word leaving me to wonder what was on his mind.

I let out a sigh of my own, standing up and brushing off the back of my dress that stopped just above the knee before leaning down to grab the bowl holding only a few stray pieces. I was turning to head back inside seeing as the streets had all but cleared when a hand grabbed my wrist and pulled me over to the right side of the house.

“Hey Alex,” I sighed as I leaned against the side of my house, him watching me as I moved.

“What’s wrong sugar plum?” He asked with a cheeky grin as he put his arms up on either side of my head making me laugh.

“Jason’s being all blahh and I think he might be suspecting something.” I explained shrugging as I set the bowl down on the cold grass which was chilling the bottoms of my bare feet.

“Well that sucks,” Alex muttered when I stood back up straight.

I looked up at him, and my eyes locked onto his chocolate brown ones that were dancing with mischief and that hidden emotion that I couldn’t make out.

“What?” I asked him with a suspicious glance only to have him close the gap between us to lock his lips on mine.

I laughed into the kiss, reaching up and wrapping my arms around his neck while his hands sat lightly against my sides.

But all while we were lost in the kiss, we didn’t notice Jack rounding the corner of the Gaskarth house with a smile that soon dropped when he saw his best friend once more embracing a married woman, right outside of her house no less just out of view of the street.

Jack stood there and watched the two laugh and hold each other as they kissed, standing not far away from the oblivious duo.

But then he saw it; Jack saw the smile on Alex’s face that he had never seen before and he knew that Alex was falling for her. He also saw the same smile on cupcake’s face showing that her feelings for Alex were the same as his.

Not knowing how to react, or if he should let them know that he was there and watching, Jack decided to leave them be hoping that Alex would make the right choice and end things before they got too far for him to handle.

Still, he was right when he said that they would be a cute couple.
