Aly, Jack, and Lillie were currently driving to Lillie’s house. Jack was pleased to know that Aly’s grandmother accepted them being together. She actually thought that they looked cute together. This had brought a smile to Aly’s face which brought one to Lillie’s as well. Lillie, however, worried about the rest of the family.
“Are we there yet?” Aly asked for the fiftieth time. You would think that this would annoy Jack, but he was doing the same thing.
“Yeah, are we there yet?”
“Yes, we’re here,” Lillie answered this time. Jack turned to Aly and nodded his head. They both exclaimed and threw their arms in the air. Lillie smiled to herself. Jack was perfect for her granddaughter.
After pulling into the driveway, the trio went into the house. Banners and ribbons covered the room. Jack wondered how they could have done all of this. Lillie had called them on the ride there. He peered into the kitchen and saw a birthday cake as well. Maybe they expected her to say yes.
“Happy birthday!” the room yelled. Maybe that’s how they got everything done. There were more people than he expected. There had to be about 20 people.
Aly started to greet and talk to everyone. Jack didn’t know anyone, so he just stayed by her side. She seemed fine with it. Not a lot of people were even paying attention to him. They were just happy that they got to be with their family member again. There was one person that kept staring at him with a frown on her face.
Aly pulled Jack over to her. “This is my Auntie Lauren. Auntie Lauren, this is Jack.” She had dark red hair and bright green eyes. She was slim and probably 5’5”, and she wore a dark blue business suit.
Jack offered to shake hands with her. “It’s nice to meet you.”
She didn’t even move her arm. “You too,” she sneered before walking away. What was her problem?
“I want you to meet my favorite cousin.” The young girl dragged the lanky man over to a girl that looked the same age as Aly. She was also the same height as Aly. Aly’s cousin had long autumn hair and one sea green and one sky blue eye. She was wearing black skinnies, a black band T-shirt, and dark make-up. She looked the opposite of Aly. “This is my favorite cousin, Aurora. Aurora, this is Jack.”
“Hi,” Aurora signed. Jack was confused. Was she deaf too?
“Aurora is mute.” That explains it. “She can talk,but she doesn’t want to talk, so she signs.” She walked back over to her grandmother. “When are we having cake? I’m hungry.”
“How about now?” Lillie asked.
“Yeah! I want it now!”
“Everyone to the dining room! The birthday girl wants her cake now!”
Everyone did as told and made their way over to the dining room. Aly sat at the end of the table with Jack on her right and her Aunt Lauren on her left. Lillie came into the room with the cake and set it in front of Aly. The cake was two layered and, of course, sky blue. Lillie sat down next to Jack, and everyone began to sing.
Aly smiled. There were people that cared about her still. Before the song was over though, Alesia came back. She wanted to be the one to make a wish. She thought of it and then blew out the candles. Everyone cheered.
“What did you wish for?” Lillie signed.
“If I tell you, it won’t come true,” Alesia answered.
The next part Lillie didn’t sign. She was too shocked. “Alesia?”
When she nodded, everyone looked at her with wide eyes. They had not seen this girl in seven years. Actually, they never thought that they would see her again. They thought that when she hit her head, Alesia was destroyed.
“Jack,” Alesia started, “may I have a kiss?”
“Of course,” he smiled.
He leaned over and started to kiss her. It wasn’t a peck like he gave Alesia. It was a real kiss. His hand moved to her cheek, and their lips moved in sync. Both of them didn’t care that they were doing this in front of Alesia’s family. They both wanted this. They finally pulled away because the need for air was too great.
“My wish came true.” Jack just smiled at that. Only Alesia would wish for a kiss from him.
“What is the meaning of this!?” Aunt Lauren stood up. Everyone turned to look at her and then back to the couple. “Why the hell did you kiss her!?”
“She wanted me to,” Jack answered.
“Why would she want you to!?”
“Because I’m her boyfriend.”
“What do you mean that you’re her boyfriend!?”
“Why not!?” Jack stood up as well. He was pissed off.
“She’s like a child! She can’t have a boyfriend!”
“She’s not a child all the time! There is nothing wrong with her!”
“Of course there is something wrong with her! She’s mental! She can’t make choices on her own!”
“She’s not mental!”
“She was in a mental hospital!”
“Yeah because she put herself in there!”
“She still can’t have a boyfriend!”
“Yes, she can!”
“She probably doesn’t even like you! Her mind is like a child’s!”
“She does too like me!”
“Have you two had sex?”
“That has nothing to do with it!”
“You’re probably just using her because she’s easy!”
“Shut the fuck up! I love her!” Everyone went silent. He finally realized what he said. He look over at Alesia to find that the girl’s eyes were wide. She was lipreading the whole argument. Shit. “Can we go?” Jack calmly signed Alesia.
She nodded. Lillie went with them out to her car. Alesia got in the back and looked out the window. She didn’t look at Jack. Jack sighed as he got in next to her, and Lillie got into the driver’s seat.
“I”m really sorry about Lauren,” Lillie apologized to Jack. “She always speaks her mind.”
“It’s fine.” He didn’t realize that he was holding his breath. “Besides, I could see that everyone agreed with her.”
“Not everyone did. I don’t, and Aurora didn’t either.”
“Two people woopy.”
“Is Alesia ok?”
“I don’t know. She won’t look at me. That was the first time that I’ve said that I love her. I hope she’s not upset.”
“She’s probably just thinking about it. Don’t worry. You two are perfect together.”
“Thanks.”
“Before we left, I grabbed her old sketchbook. You know that she only draws that same picture over and over again?”
“Yeah. She did draw a picture of me because I asked her and a pic of what we did at the zoo though.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. She enjoyed it too.”
“You’ll like what I’m going to show you.” When we reached a red light, she gave Jack the sketchbook that was in the passenger seat. “There was something that she drew right before she started drawing the ocean. This sketchbook is only filled with that one other thing. Take a look.”
I opened the book to find... a picture of me from when I was younger. “This is...me.” I started flipping through the pages. They were all me at different times that I was with her. There were ones where I was at the beach and the hospital. Of course, some of them were just pics of my face. “They are all me.”
“She did those when we weren’t looking at night when she was suppose to be asleep. I would watch her on some of those nights. I think...I think that they were done by Alesia, not Aly. That’s why I was so happy that you were the one that she went with. I truly believe that part of her recognized you.”
“Maybe part of me recognized her too.”
“I know that she cares about you. Don’t worry.”
When they got home, Jack waved goodbye to Lillie. Alesia didn’t. She just went straight into their place. Jack went in as well and found Alesia standing there, waiting for him. What was she going to say to him?
“You didn’t notice it, but I was listening to your conversation in the car. I’m not upset with you. Actually, I...I love you too.” With that, she pulled him down and placed a kiss on his lips.
