My Song Has Not Been Sung

The DA is Dressed to the Nines

Alex woke up with a headache that made him think he was on his period for a minute. He then remembered that he didn’t have a uterus and that would be impossible. He looked up to see his mum hovering over his bed.

“Sweetie, you have to get up now.” She shook his shoulder gently.

“Why? I want to sleep.” Alex rolled onto his back, away from Isobel.

“Your laptop is here so you can start your online school and it’s also Take Your Child to Work Day, and your father wants to show you his new office instead of leaving you home alone all day. It’s the courthouse so you have to look nice. I left a suit for you in your closet.” His mother left him with his day plan and went back downstairs to finish getting ready for her work.

Alex groaned loudly and hauled the blankets off of his body. He dragged himself to his bathroom and hopped in the shower. He only intended to stay in there for a few minutes so he could wash his hair, but the temperature and water pressure was perfect and he was far too tired to move before at least fifteen minutes had passed.

After he finished, he grabbed a towel from the rack and began drying himself off. When his body was dry enough, he wrapped the towel around his head to keep his hair from dripping then grabbed a pair of briefs from his dresser. He quickly pulled those on then went into his closet to grab the suit his mother spoke of.

It was a basic gray suit with a black tie and a white shirt. Alex left it on the bed for a moment so he could towel his hair dry. Once his brown locks stopped dripping, he wriggled into the tight-fit suit.

Alex was used to wearing these things. In the U.K., his dad spent most of his time either pouring over files with every piece of information about whatever case he was trying or he was actually trying the case in the courtroom. Alex’s parents hated the idea of public school and, at the time, they didn’t have the money to send him to a private school. So they bought him a laptop and since they couldn’t just leave him alone at home all day, Alex ended up going to work with his father. He was, for the most part, raised in a courthouse.

He darted into his bathroom, dug around the drawers for his straightener, blow dryer, and hair spray, then began working on his scruffled mop. After around twenty minutes of pulling every strand into its desired position, Alex still wasn’t satisfied but he knew his dad already left and if he didn’t hurry up, he was going to get grounded. Which would suck seeing as he just moved into the single greatest home ever.

Alex hurried down in the stairs, grabbed his dad’s work card from the kitchen counter quickly along with his laptop, and started punching the address into google maps as he made his way to the elevator and out of the building. The doorman attempted to make general small talk but quickly realized that Alex was in a rush and didn’t want to talk about how nice the weather was.
I should really just get a cab. Alex thought, not wanting to walk twenty minutes to the courthouse. He decided to just walk seeing as he already had the directions on his phone and he also didn’t have any cash to pay the driver with.

It was definitely an interesting trip due to the masses of people that were on the streets with Alex. It was mostly adults, dressed in similar outfits to his, rushing to work or other kids his age walking to the nearest convenience store. There were lots of stares directed at him. Honestly, most people don’t see a seventeen year old walking down the road in a business suit with a brand new Macbook and the latest iPhone.

Alex turned a few more corners before he reached the large stone building. The massive structure was much larger than the one in London. Two average sized people could stand, side-by-side, behind one of the pillars and nobody would be able to see them from the other side. I am going to get so lost inside this place.

Alex walked through the huge doors into the primarily marble building. Most of the interior was stone or wood, both having intricate designs span over their surface. Alex poked around the front lobby-ish area before he found a visitors desk.

“Hi, I’m looking for Peter Gaskarth’s office.” He asked the woman behind the desk.

“And you are?” She dialed a number on the phone next to her quickly.

“I’m his son, Alexander, he should be expecting me.” Alex replied. The receptionist spoke on her phone for a few moments, Alex was able to hear his father’s voice on the other end as the women clarified that it was okay for him to be there.

“Alright, here’s your visitor’s pass. He’s currently in a meeting but it shouldn’t be a problem. Go down that hall and it’s your last door on the right.” The receptionist smiled at Alex. He accepted the small piece of paper and attached it to his jacket.

He made his way down the hallway she pointed to. On each side were many doors, all of them either labeled “bathroom” or had someone’s name written across the glass. Alex finally came to the end of the hall. The door on his left said Gerard Way, Assistant District Attorney. Across was the one he was looking for, Peter Gaskarth, District Attorney. He waited outside the door and listened for a moment, not wanting to interrupt something important.

Detective Wyatt, if you want this suspect arrested I’m going to need more than the word of a teenager. Confirm that the DNA found in the rape kit matches the suspect, then you can get a warrant to arrest.” A familiar British accent sounded past the door.

You know full well that this kid is going to bolt the second we get his DNA. What if we can arrest him for the other two incidents then we can get his DNA when he’s getting processed and when it matches the rape kit we can charge him for that.” Another voice, presumably Detective Wyatt, proposed.

If you can talk a judge into that then be my guest. How about you let me talk to the victim and I’ll see if she can give me any more information to build the case. There’s no way that this guy can make bail and even if he could, the judge wouldn’t grant it. He’s got nothing to lose if he hops on the first train out of the state.” Peter replied.

Fine, I’ll have my partner bring Lynn over here around 3. And by the way, I know you’re used to dealing with rich guys who committed fraud and you could pretty much say whatever you wanted to them, but this girl just went through the worst experience of her life. Be nice to her. You don’t need to press her for too much information, if the DNA matches up this case is going to be an easy win.” Wyatt stated and left quickly. He nodded to Alex as he made his way down the hall.

“Hey Dad.” Alex walked into the large office and sat down at the polished wood table in the center. His father stood up from his seat on top of his pristine desk and moved to the mini fridge in the corner.

“Alexander, glad you made it. You hungry?”

“Kinda, what do you have?”

“Well now that I look, nothing,” His dad closed the door and looked back up at Alex, “want to order a pizza?”

“Sure, so tell me about that guy who just left, he looked pretty upset.” Alex answered.

“One of the detectives investigating a rape case. I know that the case will be an easy win but the only times I’ve prosecuted somebody on an offense that wasn’t white collar, I got them to plead guilty before we even considered trial. Now these guys want to go to court before I’ve even had a minute to review the case. I never thought the legal system would be so different over here.” Pete sighed and sat down next to Alex, pulling out his phone to call for some food.

“Why would the systems be different at all, it’s not like there’s a 5000 kilometer ocean in between them or anything.” Alex laughed.

“You’re going to have to get used to speaking in miles now that we’re in the states.”

“But metric makes sense, who even invented standard?” Alex huffed.

“Who started a war with us over taxes then took the u’s out of every other word?”

“Fair enough.” Alex noticed that his dad was having some trouble trying to figure out how to find the Pizza Hut number in his phone. Alex pulled his phone out of his pocket and dialed the number from yesterday. He ordered a large cheese and some cokes for the two of them.

Peter left Alex to start his school work while he pulled out a few law books from the massive bookcase inside his office. He reread everything he could find about rape laws in the U.S., not that he didn’t know the law, he just didn’t want the defense to be able to throw the entire case out because he missed a technicality.

Alex watched his dad work, not able to focus on his own school. He was far more interested in a felony case than calculus 2.

Three more hours passed and the only words spoken in that time were ‘thanks you’s’ after the pizza was delivered. Peter’s phone broke the silence as it started to buzz loudly against the wood of his desk.

“Can you get that for me, Alexander? I have to check on something quick I’ll be right back.” His dad held an old book open in his hands as he sprinted out of the room.

Alex sighed and closed out his school tab on his computer, not that he was actually working on it, “Office of Peter Gaskarth, how may I help you?”

“Yeah, can you put him on?” The same voice from the detective earlier pierced Alex’s ear.
“He’s currently unavailable, I can take a message for him.” Alex scavenged through his father’s desk in search of a notepad and a pen.

“Can you tell him that I just finished with Bryar’s arrest and his DNA should be back by tomorrow and that my partner, Detective Anderson, just informed the victim that she would be meeting with the DA and her very angry friend is storming over here with her? Have fun.” Wyatt hung up, leaving Alex in a shit situation.

Hurry up Dad, I don’t know how to deal with crazy people. Alex sat down by his computer and buried his head in his hands. Peter re-entered the room in a few minutes.

“Hey, it was that detective from earlier who called and he said that your vic’s friend got super angry or something and now they’re both on their way over.” Alex said quickly.

“Great.” Peter sighed and sat down in his plush desk chair.

A loud knock fired from the other side of the door, causing Alex to jump. This’ll be fun.
