Lucky Now

"Jack?" Lucas waved his hand in front of his friend's face. I sat staring off into space. "Jack!" Still no response. Renee sat across the table with a large grin on her face.

"Holy shit, Jack" she shook her head. All I could think about was that kiss. I felt guilty about leaving the house without checking on Valerie, but my mind was clouded with Alex. I shook my head and blinked a few times to return to reality. Lunch. I giggled, looking at my friends' faces as they stared back at me in confusion.

"What's with the day dreaming?"

"It's nothing, Renee. I swear."

"It doesn't look like nothing, jackass" Renee flicked a piece of corn from her lunch and watched it hit the tip of my nose.

"Jack has a crush on someone." Lucas butt in.

"Duh, we all knew that."

"He uh... He kissed me yesterday though." My face immediately brightened up and grinned ear to ear. The three huddled closer. Lucas and Renee nearly squealed in unison. Lucas wasn't really one for PDAs, but he did seem excited. His friend looked happy for once. "He wanted me to have lunch with him, I can't find him." I frowned, scanning the tables for Alex or anyone on the football team that could tell me where he was.

I watched a girl skip happily over to an empty table with a guy in tow. There was Alex. Why was he with some girl? I shrugged and hoped for the best as I got up, fixed my hair, and made my way over to them. My eyes locked with Alex's and I watched a smile spread across his face. I couldn't help but smile back.

"Jack"

"Alex" I spoke nervously, looking at the girl next to him. I couldn't help but glance, she never introduced herself.

"Oh, hi I'm Madison, aka Alex's best friend." That was a relief. I happily nodded in response and sat down next to Alex. I had already eaten my lunch so I didn't really have anything to do but talk. I was jut about to say something when my phone vibrated.

Valerie: Jack, I'm spending the night at a friend's house. Too dangerous to be home.

I stared at my phone in fear. What had happened since I left this morning? I'm starting to wonder how my mom is still allowed to be a mother. Alex must have noticed my uneasiness because his eyes shifted to my phone and he frowned.

"Something wrong?"

"It's uh, it's just my sister. She's not feeling too well and I'm a little worried." I forced a smile.

"I know this may not be the best thing, but my buddy Marcus said there was going to be a party tonight, you should come with me."

I hated parties. I remember mentioning that I liked to party on my dating profile but in all honesty, I preferred not to. I was seriously going to come up with an excuse but my phone buzzed again.

Valerie: If you can help it, you shouldn't come home today either.

"That actually sounds great. Do you think I could come over after school though?" I nervously asked. I hated inviting myself places, but who knows what was going on at home. I saw Madison nudge Alex with an evil grin on her face. He laughed in response to her.

"Totally, meet at our spot?" The bell rang for lunch. I nodded as I got up from my seat.

"Meet you there." I was about to walk away before I felt Alex tugging me towards him. He pressed a quick kiss on my cheek before walking off to his class. I stood in that spot, feeling a blush beginning to spread across my cheeks.

2:10 couldn't come fast enough.
