Memories That Fade Like Photographs

Chapter 2

“Kay, time to get up for school,” Chase said quietly and gently shook my arm.
“Ugh, go away,” I groaned and pulled my blanket higher up on my body.
“Kaylie Noel Armstrong, get the fuck up; if you’re not ready by 7:20, you’re walking to school,” Chase threatened and I shot up from my bed and looked at the time. 6:35 a.m.
“Ugh, fuck you Chase,” I groaned as I slid out of my bed.
“You’ll thank me later, Kase,” Chase replied using the nickname he gave me last year for no reason before he walked out of my room and back into his room so he could get dressed for school since he was still in his pajamas.
I stood up from my bed and walked over to my closet before shuffling through my clothes and picking out a pair of skinny jeans with a couple rips in them, a plain white tank top, and a cardigan. I grabbed my black ballet flats from the floor of my closet and laid them on my bed along with my backpack and purse. I quickly put on my clothes and brushed out my straight hair then put on a light foundation, eyeliner, mascara, and a little bit of gold eye shadow before grabbing my shoes, purse, and backpack and walked down the stairs quietly.
“Where are mom and dad?” I asked Jasey seeing as she was sitting at the counter eating a Poptart alone.
“Where do you think?” Jasey replied with a sigh.
“Work?” I asked as I grabbed a bowl from one of the cabinets and then got the Fruity Pebbles box out of another cabinet.
“Bingo,” Jasey replied. Mom and dad’s jobs require them to be at their offices at nearly every hour of the day, and often, they won’t get home until 8 p.m. or later.
Chase walked down the stairs fully ready for the day when I finally sat down beside Jasey and was eating. “Oh look, lazy ass is up,” Chase said with a grin when he saw me sitting beside Jasey while I ate my cereal. I put the spoon back in my bowl before flipping him off with a smile as well.
“Whatever asshole,” I said then grabbed a spoonful of my cereal and ate it as a way of telling Chase the conversation was over.
“Ugh, I don’t want to go to school,” Jasey groaned while we all sat at the table either eating in mine and Chase’s case or just sitting there watching us eat in Jasey’s case.
“Why not?” I asked.
“What if no one likes me? Come on, it’s November of my sophomore year, all the groups are already established, and I’m just going to be the new girl from New York. People are either going to hate me for being from the city, or they’re going to pretend to be my friend because I’m from the city,” Jasey explained, and damn, she has a good point, not that I’d ever tell her that, so I merely rolled my eyes and Chase threw a piece of his Poptart at her face.
“What happened to the old Jasey, the outgoing girl who can make friends faster than me and Chase combined?” I told her while sitting back down beside her.
“Says the girl who’s already made four friends even though we’ve only been here a day,” Jasey retorted.
“That was just pure luck,” I replied while I pointed at her with my spoon before continuing, “You could make friends with anyone you want just by talking to them back in New York. Everyone loved you back there, and everyone will love you here, I promise, and if not, me and Chase will go beat up every dumbass who doesn’t like you.” She laughed at me and I smiled.
“God please don’t do that, you guys would be so embarrassing!” Jasey replied while covering her face with her hands as if we’ve already embarrassed her by just talking about it, so I just smirked at her before walking to the sink and washing out my bowl.
“Then make some friends, loser!” Chase nearly yelled with his mouth full and I smacked him on the back of the head as I walked by for talking with his full. “Hey, fuck you Kaylie!”
“Bro, that’s called incest, and I don’t do that kind of thing,” I joked and Jasey started laughing. “Anyways are you about ready, slow poke? We’re going to be late for school.”
“Yeah, let’s go,” Chase said throwing away the wrapper off his Poptart and grabbing his keys before heading outside. Jasey and I slipped on our shoes and slowly followed behind him.
“Shotgun!” I yelled before Jasey could.
“Ugh, you suck,” she whined.
“Yeah I do, but how would you know that, Jasey Elizabeth Armstrong?” I said with a smirk as I climbed in beside Chase in the Mercedes he got for his birthday last year. Our uncle had just brought the car down from New York last night, and Chase is happy he can finally have his ‘baby’ back.
“Ugh Kaylie, I do not want to hear anything about your sex life,” Chase groaned as Jasey sat behind him and I laughed.
“Chase, I assure you, I’m still a virgin, whether you wanted to know that or not,” I told him seriously.
“That’s a shock, but I’m happy,” he said and Jasey laughed.
“So Chase, if you saw me fucking some guy in my room one day, what would you do?” Jasey asked in the most serious voice she could muster and, and I started laughing while he grimaced before pulling the car out of the driveway and onto our street.
“Seriously guys? Is this traumatize your older brother day?” he groaned.
Jasey and I looked at each other with a smile before simultaneously replying, “Yea.”
“Fucking great,” Chase muttered and I grinned at him before he continued, “and back to your question, I would kick his ass, then after he left, I’d probably kick yours,” Chase replied and I made a mental note to remember that, just in case.
“That’s just…wow,” Jasey replied shocked and the car was silent for a few minutes. I turned on my iPod and put my headphones in and put my playlist on shuffle. I was listening to the ending of a Blink-182 song when Maroon 5 came on and I quickly took my headphones off and turned around to Jasey.
“You know who I think is hot?” I asked all of the sudden and she gave me a weird look.
“Who?” she asked cautiously.
“Adam Levine,” I replied and she grinned.
“Oh my god yes!” she exclaimed.
“I’d tap that ass any day,” I grinned and she laughed while Chase on the other hand groaned. We then pulled into the school’s parking lot and he let out a relieved sigh as he jumped out of his car and Jasey and I followed suit.
“So, who’s excited to rock the shit out of this school?” I asked excitedly and Chase nodded while Jasey hesitated before finally nodding. We walked into the school beside each other while everyone already here gave us weird looks. “Ignore them Jase,” I told her once I saw her get nervous. She smiled at me before sticking her head up higher and walking in confidently beside Chase and me.
“Hi, we’re new here and we need our schedules,” Chase told the secretary once we were in the office. She looked up at us with a smile and I assumed she was probably in her late 20’s or early 30’s; nothing compared my old school’s secretary who was in her 70’s and was a complete bitch to everyone.
“Names?” she asked kindly as she turned to her computer.
“Jasey Armstrong, Kaylie Armstrong, and Chase Armstrong,” Chase answered and she typed into her computer for a moment before printing off three schedules. After handing us our schedules, she gave us maps and highlighted the best routes to each of our classes.
“Thank you,” I told her as we walked out of her office.
“So good luck, listen to your teachers, behave, and make new friends. Meet me out at my car after school. Bye Jase, bye Kay,” Chase said to us before walking off towards his first class.
I turned towards Jasey and she had a nervous look on her face. “Don’t be nervous babe, you’ll be perfectly fine, I’ll see you later,” I told her while giving her a huge hug which she gladly returned.
“Yeah you too, I’ll see you later Kaylie,” she said finally and walked to her class. I let out a sigh and glanced down at my schedule once again and the map so I could memorize both.
History, French, Biology, Lunch, English, Music, Math
Easy enough. I hiked my backpack higher up on my shoulder and started walking off to history. When I got there, there were a few people but not that many, so I walked up to the teacher and introduced myself then she pointed to one of the seats near the back and told me that it was my assigned seat for the rest of the year before handing me my history book. I sat down and started glancing through the book.
“Well hello, Miss Armstrong,” I heard someone whisper in my ear and I jumped before hesitantly glancing at the seat beside mine to see Alex’s smiling face.
“Oh hey, Mr. Gaskarth,” I smiled back.
“So how are you enjoying the lovely Dulaney high school?” Alex asked sarcastically.
“Well…I’ve only been here for like fifteen minutes,” I said with a grin.
“Well fair warning, this place is like hell,” Alex told me seriously.
“I’m sure it’s not that bad,” I said while laughing.
“Oh but it is!” he exclaimed overdramatically and I rolled my eyes at him and shrugged before pulling out my notebook and doodling. “Ugh you’re so boring!” he groaned and I shot him a dirty look.
“Well thanks Alex, I’ve always loved being called boring.”
“Sorry, it’s just you’d rather draw than talk to me!” Alex said dramatically.
“Stop being so dramatic, you sound like my sister,” I said while looking back down at my notebook.
“How old is your sister?” he asked and I gave him a confused look.
“Fifteen turning sixteen in three months. Why?”
“Just wondering,” he said casually.
“You cannot date her, Alex; I also have a seventeen year old brother and he’d kick your ass,” I warned him.
“Damn, you ruin all my plans,” he replied with a laugh.
“Well Alex, I’ve apparently only ruined one of them,” I told him with a laugh.
“Nah, I would never date your sister, no offense to her, but it’d be weird dating my friend’s sister,” he told me seriously and I smiled inwardly.
“Oh ok, good, because I doubt she’d even date you,” I told him with a laugh before turning back to my notebook.
“And why’s that?” he asked sounding offended
“Not her type,” I replied casually while randomly drawing hearts and stars across one of the pages.
“What’s your type?” he asked me seriously and I quickly glanced back up at him.
“Um, I honestly have no idea,” I told him after I thought for a minute. “Why?”
“Just wondering,” he replied casually.
“What do you look for in guys?” he asked and I started wishing class would start soon and it looked like luck was on my side because the teacher called the class to order right before I had to answer him. I let out a sigh of relief because if he had asked me about my dream guy, I would have described him perfectly which would be quite a humiliation.

“You never answered my question, Kay,” Alex whined once the bell rang and we were walking out of the classroom.
“What question?” I asked trying to play dumb and he sighed.
“This conversation is not over,” he warned me with a soft smile before walking in the opposite direction to his next class. I groaned and walked towards where my French class was. I was one of the first people to arrive and I introduced myself to the teacher before getting my French textbook and sitting down in front of Jack since the teacher said it didn’t matter where you sat. He tapped my shoulder with his pencil and I let out a sigh before turning around.
“What?” I said a little harsher than I meant.
“I was just going to say hi,” Jack said with sadness evident in his voice and I felt guilty.
“I’m sorry Jacky, history just kind of stressed me out,” I apologized with a smile and he returned the smile.
“History stressed you out? Or Alex?” he said suggestively and I blushed.
“I don’t want to answer that,” I told him with a small chuckle.
“Oh so it was Alex?” he asked with a smile.
“Fine, yes,” I said with a groan.
“And why’s that?” he asked me with an accomplished smile for getting me to admit this.
“I don’t know, Jack, he just made me nervous,” I admitted quietly.
“How?” he asked.
“He just kept asking me about what I see in guys and then he told me right before class ended that the conversation wasn’t over and we’d continue it later, and it just makes me nervous!” I exclaimed loud enough for everyone in the room to hear which caused me to blush, and Jack just smiled.
“What makes you nervous?” Rian asked walking up to us and sitting across from Jack.
“Nothing,” I answered with a blush and he gave me a weird look. “Ok fine, Alex makes me nervous,” I said so quietly and quickly that I doubt Rian even heard.
“What?” he asked confirming that he couldn’t hear.
“Kaylie gets nervous over Alex,” Jack said in a sing-song voice with a huge smile, and I blushed madly before turning around.
“Aw, there’s no need to get embarrassed, Kaylie,” Rian said and I turned back around and gave him a weird look.
“And why can’t I get embarrassed? He’s your best friend, and I doubt he’d ever like someone like me,” I said. “Fuck,” I muttered quietly after realizing I basically told them I liked Alex.
“Whoa, you like him?” Jack said loudly and everyone gave me weird looks.
“Shut up!” I hissed at him with a bright red blush.
“Aw you do!” Rian said happily with a huge grin.
“It’s obvious he likes you; he doesn’t go around asking girls what they like about guys; that’s his way of trying to figure out if you’d ever date him, so answer his questions honestly,” Jack explained while my face continued to get redder, if that’s even possible.
“Can we please stop talking about this?” I practically begged them and Jack shrugged while Rian gave me another weird look.
“Fine,” Rian finally said then Jack and Rian started talking about their band and I turned around and just stared at the board, not even really paying attention to what was being written.

After French, I basically ran out of the room and then slowly walked into the biology classroom. I got my book from the teacher then was told to sit by a girl with red-ish brown hair.
“Hi I’m Rachel,” she introduced herself kindly.
“I’m Kaylie,” I replied nicely even though I was still flustered and frustrated from my conversation with Jack and Rian. “You’re in my history class aren’t you? You look really familiar,” I asked and she laughed.
“Yeah. So you’re friends with Gaskarth?” she asked seriously and I was thrown off by how serious she got all of the sudden.
“Uh yeah I guess. I met him yesterday, and he, Jack, and Rian are the only ones from the school that I know.”
“Be careful around him. He’s the school’s manwhore, and all he wants to do is sleep with girls, and you seem too nice to have him hurt you,” she said seriously, and I squirmed in my seat. He’s what? I can’t believe Jack and Rian actually encouraged me to date him. “Oh my god, you like him don’t you?” she asked shocked and I slowly nodded.
“Yeah, I kinda do, and Jack and Rian encouraged me to date him,” I said quietly.
“Oh, well I guess you can date him, but I just wanted to warn you how he acts because you’re new and I’ve known since eighth grade year,” she told me before looking away.
“Thanks for the advice,” I said quietly with disappoint evident in my voice and she just nodded because class was starting.

Throughout all of biology, I was starting to hope I wouldn’t have to sit beside Alex at lunch and act like I hadn’t just found out about his reputation. I sighed once the bell rang and I slowly walked out of the room and put my books in my locker before searching for my lunch money. “Shit,” I muttered once I realized I had given my money to Chase this morning. I slammed my locker shut with a scowl before walking into the cafeteria alone. I stood in the middle of the cafeteria while trying to find out where to sit.
“Kaylie!” I heard someone yell and I glanced around and saw Jack wildly waving his hands around. I let out a groan once I saw the only available spot was beside Alex, but then I faked a smile to make it seem like I was happy before walking over to them.
“Hey Kay,” Rian said then I noticed the girl sitting beside him and my eyes scrunched up in confusion. “Oh this is my girlfriend Kara Diakoulas, Kara this is Kaylie Armstrong, she just moved here yesterday,” Rian introduced us and she smiled at me nicely.
“Why didn’t you get any food, Kay?” Jack asked confused as he stuffed at least five fries in his mouth at once and I tried not to grimace.
“Well, I was being a dumbass and forgot that I gave my brother all of my money this morning,” I replied with a small laugh while I sat down beside Alex.
“Do you want some of my food?” Alex asked nicely.
“Nah, I’m not actually that hungry,” I said with a smile.
“So Kay, what was your last boyfriend from New York like?” Jack asked trying to act natural which caused me to glare at him before kicking him. “Ow! What the fuck was that for?” he exclaimed. I glanced at Alex nervously and he looked at Jack weirdly but then looked at me curiously.
“Ok fine, if you really want to know, my ex-boyfriend was a complete jackass. We broke up a couple weeks before I came to Maryland because he cheated on me with my best friend,” I explained with a scowl as I thought back to my ex.
“Aw, I’m sorry,” Kara apologized then looked at Rian, “If you ever cheat on me, I will kick your ass,” she threatened him with a small smile which made me smile and Rian chuckle.
“I would never cheat on you Kara,” Rian said then quickly kissed her and I looked away and happened to glance at Alex who had been looking at me the whole time. I gave him a quick smile before glancing back down at the empty spot in front of me. I slipped my phone out of my pocket and glanced at the screen to see that I had no new messages so I opened up a new message and decided to text my sister.
To: Jase
Hey Jase…any asses I need to kick yet? haha

I glanced back up from my phone and listened quietly to everyone’s conversations when I felt my phone vibrate on my lap.
From: Jase
Nah, it’s all good, how’s your day so far? Got a boyfriend yet? ;)

I scowled inwardly and glanced around at the table. Rian and Kara were flirting with each other, Jack was stuffing his face with food, and Alex was looking around at the cafeteria.
To: Jase
No…I wish, but I’ll tell you about it after we get home

I looked up at the clock and noticed we still had at least fifteen more minutes of lunch. My stomach growled loudly and I laughed which caused Alex to give me a weird look.
“What was that?” he asked with a laugh.
“My stomach, I didn’t realize I was so hungry until now,” I said still laughing. Alex pushed his tray at me and I ate a few French fries before I grimaced. “Ew, school food tastes like shit,” I complained then saw Jack give me a sly smile and saw he was about to say something, “not literally Jack.”
“Damn it,” he mumbled and I laughed at him.
“What’s your next class?” Alex asked when there were only a couple minutes left.
“English,” I replied as we both got up and I walked beside him talking as he dumped his tray.
“Really me too, I can walk with you, if you don’t care that is,” Alex suggested and I smiled. Maybe Rachel was just lying.
“Yeah sure, just let me get my notebook and purse out of my locker,” I told him once we started walking back to where the lockers were, and he followed me to my locker.
“Hey Kay?” Alex asked seriously as I pulled out what I needed and shut my locker before following beside Alex to English.
“Yeah?” I replied confused.
“Why were you so quiet today at lunch? It seemed as if you were trying to avoid talking to me,” Alex asked and he sounded hurt.
I gulped and realized it was best to just tell him the truth or at least half of it as I didn’t want to tell him I liked him and he made me nervous because of it. “Well there’s this girl in my biology class named Rachel and she told me to be careful hanging out with you because you’re the school’s manwhore and you probably just want to sleep with me. I got really freaked out and believed her,” I admitted to him and I glanced over at him nervously. He let out a sigh then suddenly stopped in the middle of the hallway and I stopped too, confused with him.
“I used to be that way, but I promise you Kay, I would never do that to you. Rachel is just nervous because I had actually done that to her best friend,” Alex admitted seriously before I heard the bell ring signaling that we had two more minutes before the tardy bell rang.
“Shit, let’s go, I’d rather not be late my first day of English,” I told Alex before rushing through the hallway and into the classroom. Alex went to the back of the room while I went up to the teacher and introduced myself to her. She told me to sit at the table with Alex as that was the only available seat.
“What’s up partner?” Alex said with a grin and I rolled my eyes at him but smiled nonetheless.
“Well hi again Alex,” I said with a smile while sitting down beside him.
“So back to our conversation from earlier?” Alex suggested when the teacher started talking.
“Ugh, fine. What do you want to know?” I asked with a groan while I started doodle on a blank sheet of paper from my notebook.
“What do you look for in guys?” he asked and I gave him a confused look before paying attention.
“Well, I like it when the guys taller than me, it’s just weird when they’re shorter,” I joked as I thought about this one guy back in New York that liked me before I continued, “Also, I’ve always wanted a guy that could write me a song or sing to me,” I admitted then realized Alex could actually do both and was, in fact, taller than me so I looked away when he started to smile before nodding.
The rest of English went on with Alex asking me all kinds of questions, as well as math and music because Alex and I have those two classes together as well. I’m happy I can talk to Alex normally again without worrying about what Rachel told me earlier today.

Notes
