Memories That Fade Like Photographs

Chapter 12

The two weeks seemed to pass by uneventfully. The guys practiced daily for their upcoming gig, and Kara, Caitlyn, and I were at every practice. Alex and I were probably considered the talk of the school with our relationship – me being the ‘new girl’ and him being considered the school’s manwhore – not that I paid much attention to what everyone at school was saying about me.
Tomorrow afternoon was the guys’ New York gig, so they were having one last practice tonight. To say I was excited to visit New York again and see the guys do what they loved was an understatement.
“Good practice tonight, guys!” I said once their last song finished, and Alex smiled while making his way over to me before sitting on my lap and wrapping his arms around my waist.
“Thanks babe!” Alex said in a high pitched voice, mocking half the girls at our school, making me to roll my eyes at him.
“Alex, you’re fatness is squishing me!” I joked but kissed his cheek nonetheless.
“Toughen up, Kay; I’m not fat,” Alex said while burying his face in my neck causing a giggle to escape my lips as his hair tickled at my neck.
“Will you guys stop? It’s disgusting!” Jack said from the floor directly below Caitlyn.
“Oh shut up, you’re just jealous,” she told Jack as she absentmindedly played with his hair. One thing I’ve learnt about Jack and Caitlyn is that they are close; they’ve known each other four years now and they’ve been close ever since then. Caitlyn likes Jack and its obvious Jack returns the feelings, but neither of them wants a relationship so they stay just friends.
I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I hadn’t realized Alex got off of my lap until I felt him wrap his arms around my middle from beside me before pulling me onto his lap, and I leant my head back on his chest and shutting my eyes in happiness.
Most people at school said mine and Alex’s relationship was moving too quickly, but what none of them realize is that Alex and I already cuddled, held hands, etc. before we even became official.
“The guys, Kara, and Caitlyn are staying at my house tonight so they’ll already be there when we leave tomorrow morning; you can come over too if you want,” Alex said quietly into my ear as everyone around us held their own conversations with one another.
“Alright. Just let me go home to get my stuff,” I replied back just as quietly even though no one was even paying attention to what we were saying, and even if they were, they wouldn’t care at all.
“Do you want me to come with you?” he asked and I shook my head.
“Nah, I already packed last night, I just need to go grab it and talk to Chase. I’ll see you at your house,” I told Alex before quickly kissing him then getting up from the couch.
“I’m gonna grab my stuff, see you guys later,” I told no one in particular and got either nods or ‘see you soon’s from the people scattered around the room before I quickly walked up the steps to the main part of Rian’s house. After getting upstairs, I went outside and made the short walk to my house.
Once inside, I quickly jogged up the staircase and went to my room, grabbing my backpack with enough clothes to last the two days we’d be in New York; we were leaving early tomorrow and spending the day just doing whatever in New York, and tomorrow night the guys would have their concert and afterwards we all agreed to just stay in a hotel for the night to just rest before the drive back to Lutherville later the next day. Inside my bag was also my phone charger, my iPod, and a book to read on incase I got bored though I highly doubted it; I was also taking my laptop that was in a separate case of its own.
Since it was already around eight, I decided to change into a pair of sweatpants and tank top before pulling one of Alex’s hoodies that he let me borrow on. With my backpack and laptop case on my shoulder and my keys and phone in hand, I walked out of my room and across the hall to Chase’s room.
“Hey Chase?” I called quietly before carefully opening his already half opened door up fully with my hip.
“What’s up, Kay?” Chase replied, taking his eyes off the movie he wasn’t even paying attention to.
“I’m going to Alex’s now. I’ll, um, see you in a couple days,” I told Chase somewhat awkwardly; he didn’t necessarily want me to spend nearly my whole weekend in New York with the guys, Caitlyn, and Kara, but since mom and dad were fine with it, he didn’t object even though we both knew our parents could care less where I was the whole weekend since they were so busy themselves.
“Alright; have fun, Kay, just please be careful up in New York please?” Chase asked and I nodded. He was obviously worried about me going there after everything that has happened when we lived there.
“Alright Chase I promise I will be. Love you,” I told him before turning around. I was halfway out his door when he called my name again; I turned around and raised an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to finish what he was going to say.
“Have you and Alex…you know?” Chase asked me awkwardly and I tilted my head, not exactly sure what he was getting at.
“What?” I asked a second later and Chase’s face turned red instantly.
“Please don’t make me say it, Kay. You’re my sister; that’s just too awkward to say,” Chase said, the blush still apparent on his face, and that’s when what he was saying clicked.
“Oh God! No!” I nearly shouted, my voice going up several octaves higher than normal as my face turned bright red.
“O-ok. That’s good,” Chase said awkwardly as he coughed slightly, clearly embarrassed by this conversation, but he wasn’t the only one embarrassed.
“I-I’m gonna go now. Bye,” I stuttered out before quickly exiting his room. I went down the stairs and made my way back outside and into my car, seeing that everyone had already left Rian’s house to probably go get their stuff and head over to Alex’s.
I got in my car and turned the CD player on which had the boys’ EP playing. I put my keys in the switch and quickly started the car before backing out of the driveway while quietly singing along with Hit The Lights. Whoever Alex wrote the song about, I didn’t really want to know, but it was a catchy song.
The four song EP was starting back up again by the time I made it to Alex’s house, so I turned it off, taking in the complete silence of the car. Opening my car door, I stepped out then reached across the seat for everything I was taking with me. I made my way up to Alex’s house and got ready to knock on the door while Alex opened the door with a smile on his beautiful face.
“Hey,” Alex said while stepping out of the way so I could make my way inside the house.
“Hey. Where’s everyone else?” I asked, noticing how quiet his house was.
“Not here yet. Rian’s picking Kara up since she had a little more to pack first, Zack had to drive over to Towson, Caitlyn got her stuff then went over to Jack’s to pick him up, and Jack, being the dumbass he always is, forgot to pack so he’s quickly trying to do that,” Alex answered, rolling his eyes at what he said about Jack, and I stifled a laugh.
“Jack is an idiot,” I told Alex and he agreed instantly as we walked into his living room. He sat down at the end of the couch as I put my stuff on the floor before sitting down beside him and leaning against his chest as he traced patterns on my arm with one of his hands while the other held me by my waist.
“Are you excited for tomorrow?” Alex asked after a couple minutes of our peaceful silence and I smile made its way onto my face.
“Yeah. It feels good to be able to go back to New York for a couple days, and I’m really excited to see you guys play,” I told him while looking up him with the smile still on my face.
“This is your first time seeing us live isn’t it?” he asked and I nodded.
“Mhm, remember I was supposed to go to that one concert but I had to go to California.”
“Well that one wasn’t our best so you didn’t miss much, but we’ve been practicing a lot more since then,” Alex admitted and I snuggled up to him even more.
“I know you guys have; I’ve been to all of your practices,” I reminded him before we both went silent again, both of us taking in the other’s company.
“My brother asked about us earlier,” I said all of the sudden as my mind went back to mine and Chase’s awkward conversation before I got here.
“What about us?” Alex asked, instantly curious.
“He wanted to know if we’ve ever, uh, slept with each other,” I said slightly awkwardly while looking away from Alex’s face so I didn’t have to see his expression.
“Why did he want to know that?” Alex asked and I looked back up at him to see he had an eyebrow raised.
“I’m not really sure. I guess his older brother protectiveness kicked in or something,” I replied and we went back into silence for around a minute before Alex spoke up again.
“Well do you want to sometime?” Alex asked quietly, almost like he didn’t even want me to hear.
“What?”
“You know, sleep together,” Alex said quietly and I could tell he was starting to feel awkward about this conversation.
Why were we even talking about this?! Someone please hurry up and get here!
“Um someday probably; just not anytime soon, ok? I’m just…not ready,” I managed to say while taking short pauses so I wouldn’t stutter a lot.
“Yeah of course,” Alex said quickly.
The silence between the two of us was filled with awkwardness before I let out a small laugh. Alex looked at me weirdly, so I quickly explained. “Why the hell are we even having this conversation?” I asked before another laugh escaped me and Alex laughed as well.
“Honestly? I have no idea,” Alex replied.
“Hey guys!” Kara’s voice called from the front door before she and Rian made their way into the living room where she saw mine and Alex’s cuddling. “Well aren’t you too cute.”
“Shut up!” I whined my face slightly turning red and Alex chuckled.
Not even fifteen minutes later, everyone else got to Alex’s house; Jack and Caitlyn of course being the last two people. We decided to all watch a movie in the living room, but we all fell asleep not even halfway through the movie. As I was falling asleep, I thought about how exciting seeing the guys perform live and seeing New York again would be. But boy will I be wrong about the latter part…
