Memories That Fade Like Photographs

Chapter 1

“This is fucking bullshit!” I muttered from the backseat as Chase glanced over at me and nodded. My mom, dad, brother, sister, and I were driving to our new home in Lutherville, Maryland and after about 3 and a half hours, a sign showed we only had 9 miles until Lutherville. “Why the hell would we even need to fucking move?” I saw Chase shrug in my peripheral vision.
“Kaylie, watch your language!” my mom scolded from the passenger seat as she looked in the mirror to glare at me. I just gave her a blank stare and shrugged before muttering off even more profanity as Chase and Jasey started laughing.
“Kaylie Noel Armstrong, Chase Alexander Armstrong, Jasey Elizabeth Armstrong, stop it now!” My dad yelled as both my mom and dad glared at our laughing selves. As soon as my dad yelled, we instantly quieted down; our dad almost never yelled. I quickly pulled out my iPod and started messing around with it, Chase started looking at the window at the passing scenery, and Jasey pulled out her phone and started texting who knows who; all of us trying to ignore the awkward and tense silence in the car.
“We’re here!” my mom exclaimed in a fake cheery voice as I heard Chase let out a sigh of relief since we could finally leave the tension in the car. Jasey and Chase didn’t even wait until the car was at a complete stop before they were out of the car and walking to our new three-story house. “Are you coming, Kaylie?” my mom asked, sticking her head back in her opened door.
“Hm? Oh yeah,” I replied, lost in thought as I took in the new surroundings. I slowly opened my door and got out of the car and walked towards the house. The inside of the house was big, the opening foyer spacious, and several boxes were stacked around the house with labels in my mom’s neat handwriting telling where the items belonged. I shuffled up the stairs and started glancing through all the open doors to find my room. I let out a groan once I made it to the end of the hall and saw that my room was across from Chase’s.
“’Sup up, neighbor?” Chase asked as he leaned on his door frame and smirked at me.
“Shut up, Chase,” I muttered walking into my room and slamming the door and looking around at the soft white carpet, bluish-green walls, and the piles of boxes. I slipped off my Ugg boots and walked over to the small balcony outside my room and opened up the sliding glass door and went outside and took in the Lutherville scenery before deciding to explore my new home for the next two years of my life.
I ran down the stairs a couple minutes later, taking two steps at a time before I hit the bottom step. “Mom! I’m going to go take a walk!” I yelled through the empty foyer and walked out the door and into the cold Lutherville. It was so cold that I could see my breath in front of me as I shuffled through the town. I could hear kids laughing in the distance as snow fell all around me.

“Woah, careful!” I heard a guy exclaim as I slipped on some ice near a park probably fifteen minutes away from my new house and I felt a pair of hands grip around my waist as he balanced me.
“Th-thanks,” I stuttered, completely embarrassed someone saw me almost fall, especially someone I’ve never met. I looked up to see a guy with black hair with a blond streak in it looking at me with a huge smile on his face.
“I’m Jack!” he exclaimed sticking his hand out at me.
“Kaylie,” I said, slightly less enthusiastic as he shook my hand vigorously.
“So, Kaylie, what are you doing here in this lovely town?” Jack asked, with a hint of sarcasm when he said ‘lovely,’ as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and started walking as I looked over at his arm with a confused look, I barely even knew the guy.
“Um, my brother, sister, mom, dad, and I just moved here today from New York.”
“Oh, a city girl, eh?” Jack asked and nudged my ribs with his elbow and I slightly squirmed causing him to chuckle and do that again.
“Yeah, Manhattan,” I said not as excited as he was about this conversation.
“Damn,” he muttered as he looked me over.
“Wh-what?” I said feeling uncomfortable with his stares.
“You do look like a city girl,” he said with a nod as he finally looked away.
“Um, thanks?” I said confused if that was a compliment or not and we continued to walk in a somewhat awkward silence. “I should probably be getting back home,” I said, finally deciding to break the weird silence.
“Oh yeah, I was supposed to be at my friend’s house…twenty minutes ago,” Jack said as we turned around with his arm still around my shoulder.
“Damn, little late, don’t you think?” I said with a laugh and Jack started laughing as well.
“Nah, he’s used to it,” Jack shrugged like it was no big deal and I chuckled as I looked over at him. “So do you know your way back home?”
“Um,” I started awkwardly.
“Jeez. You’d think a New Yorker would be able to navigate her way through this little place,” Jack joked.
“Hey, don’t even think about dissing New York,” I scolded him.
“Wasn’t going to, babe,” he winked at me while my face turned bright red. “How about I walk you to my friend’s house, and you can call home for directions once we get there so we can get out of the cold?” Jack suggested.
“Fine by me,” I told him as we started walking off in the direction of his friend’s house.

“Whoa, how’d you know where I lived?” I said shocked and surprised as Jack looked over at me questionably. “That’s my house,” I pointed over to the big house across the street from where Jack and I were standing.
“Seriously?!” Jack asked shocked and I nodded at him. “Well, this is my friend’s house,” he said pointing to the house we were standing in front of.
“I figured,” I said with a laugh as I started walking backwards towards my house. “Bye Jack!” I said before I started to walk away.
“Wait Kaylie!” Jack exclaimed and I turned to him questionably. “Do you still want to come over and hang out?” he asked hopefully.
“I’m sorry but I still need to unpack at least a little bit,” I apologized and his face fell which made me feel bad. “Maybe later, or another day?” I asked him.
“Most definitely. What’s your number? I’ll text you later,” Jack asked while I walked back to him again. I quickly put the number in his phone before waving and walking back towards my quiet house.

I had unpacked a couple boxes before I got very bored, so now I was singing along to Blink-182’s Enema of the State when I heard someone knock at my door, and I quickly turned off my CD player and turned around to face my brother standing in my doorway.
“I really hope you weren’t planning on auditioning for American Idol because you suck,” my brother said with a laugh and I knew he was just joking about it.
“I hate you, Chase. What do you want?” I said with a fake glare on my face.
“Um, there’s some guy downstairs saying he knows you,” he said as a confused look formed on my face and I followed Chase downstairs to see Jack standing in the foyer while looking around and whistling along to some unknown song until he saw me and a huge grin formed on his face.
“Kaylie!” Jack exclaimed and my brother continued to stare at me like I was an idiot.
“Jacky!” I exclaimed back with as much enthusiasm and we both busted out laughing as I wrapped my arms around his neck to give him a huge hug. “What’s up?”
“Well my friends said you should come over now, so wanna go hang out with me and a couple of douche bags?” Jack asked and I chuckled.
“Sure, just let me go put some shoes on,” I said before jogging up the stairs and going back to my room and slipped on my shoes and brushed my hair quickly. “Alrighty, let’s go!” I yelled coming down the stairs. “Bye, Chase,” I said quickly looking over at him.
“Bye, bitch,” he replied before turning away and getting ready to go back upstairs to his room and I could hear the smirk in his voice.
“Whatever, jackass,” I replied while walking out the door with Jack following. “Ignore my stupid brother,” I said once I saw Jack look over at me questionably and then shrug before we both started laughing for absolutely no reason at all. It was weird to know I already had one friend here in Lutherville, despite the fact I’ve only been here for a few hours.
Once we got to the house across the street, Jack opened the door and motioned for me to come inside. It was quiet once we entered the house and I looked over at Jack questionably as we slipped off our shoes and he started walking up the stairs and I quickly followed, taking in my surroundings as we walked in a comfortable silence. There were multiple school pictures along with family pictures hanging on the wall in the upstairs hallway with a couple doors on each side. He stopped at a doorway near the end of the hall that had multiple band pictures posted on the door, and he quickly opened the door and ushered me in first.
“What’s up, douche bags?” Jack greeted the other three guys and I just awkwardly stood in my spot. “Oh yeah, this is Kaylie. Kaylie this is Alex, Rian, and Zack,” Jack said while pointing at each guy.
“Hi,” I said shyly and they all greeted me.
“I thought you said she was much louder Jack,” Rian joked and I blushed before I looked at the guys more closely and once my eyes landing on Alex, my blush intensified and I hoped the guys didn’t notice.
“Well she was,” Jack said before looking at me with a pout, “What’s wrong, Kaylie? The guys won’t bite,” Jack said with a laugh while poking at my side, causing me to squirm.
“Well I might,” Alex said laughing and all the guys joined in while I blushed again.

A few hours later, I was still hanging out with the guys and had become close friends with all of them. They were fascinated with the fact I had been born in Oakland, California and lived in Manhattan, New York most of my life; they were also shocked when they found out my uncle is Billie Joe Armstrong from one of their favorite bands, Green Day. They told me they are in a band called All Time Low and told me I had to watch them practice tomorrow after school.
“Fuck! I start school tomorrow!” I exclaimed after they mentioned band practice.
“It’ll be fine, at least you already have three friends there,” Rian said kindly and I gave him a weird look. “Zack lives in the next town over, so he goes to school in Towson.”
“Oh,” I said then glanced down at my phone since it just vibrated in my pocket, signaling a new text.
From: Jase
Please get home, mom’s in one of her moods again.

I opened up a new message and quickly typed a reply.
To: Jase
On my way, Jase, just go to Chase’s room and I’ll be there in a few minutes.

I muttered a few profanities under my breath before apologetically glancing at the four guys in front of me. “I have to go, sorry. Bye guys,” I said quickly before standing up and rushing out of the room.
“Wait, Kay, what’s wrong?” Alex asked concerned once he caught up with me while I was slipping my shoes at the front door.
“Nothing’s wrong. My sister just texted me and told me that I needed to get home because my mom just finished dinner,” I lied even though I didn’t like lying to him, or the rest of the guys.
“Oh ok,” Alex said with a tinge of disappoint and I raised an eyebrow that he simply shrugged it off. “Bye Kaylie, see you tomorrow.”
“Bye, Alex,” I said while opening the door and slipping out. I walked up to my driveway and stood at the end of it while typing out a new text to Chase.
To: Chay
Is Jasey with you and is mom near the door?

I stood there while trying to glance in the house while awaiting a reply.
From: Chay
Yea she’s in my room and you’re good, mom’s in the family room

I let out a sigh of relief before continuing up my driveway and quietly walking in the house and tiptoed up the stairs. Jasey let out a relieved sigh once she saw me and she ran up and hugged me before we joined Chase on his bed.
“Did she hurt you?” I asked Jasey concerned.
“No, she’s just been yelling. Dad’s with her now and is trying to calm her down,” Chase said while Jasey hugged me tightly once again. Our mom is normally nice, but she also has her anger issues and sometimes loses it and yells at Chase, Jasey, and I; the reason we had to leave New York is mom had slapped Jasey and left a mark that Jasey couldn’t hide completely and one of Jasey’s teachers thought she figured it out, so dad moved us before she could get in trouble for slapping Jasey. Mom still feels horrible about it, but when her anger kicks in, she can’t help what she does, so Jasey, Chase, and I have learnt to stay away from her during her angry moods, and we tend to just stay in Chase’s room together so we can protect each other in case anything ever happens.
“So who was that guy that came over earlier Kay?” Chase asked after a couple minutes of silence.
“Oh, just this guy I met when I took a walk earlier,” I said.
“Leave it to Kaylie to get a boy even though we just got here today,” Jasey said with a laugh.
“Shut up guys. We’re just friends, and that’s how it’s going to stay!” I exclaimed with a blush.
“Really so why are you blushing?” Chase teased.
“Promise not to tell anyone, ok?” I said seriously and they nodded. “Ok so, I went over to his friend Rian’s house, because he’s our neighbor, and Jack’s other friends Alex and Zack were there as well, and well, I think I might like Alex…a lot,” I mumbled the last part while I blushed madly.
“Aw. Good luck, Kay. I’m sure he likes you, any guy would be stupid not to, but guys can be complete jerks so please be careful,” Chase warned me seriously and I smiled.
“Will do, brother,” I said and fake saluted him with a chuckle.
“Jeez, Chase, you don’t have to be so protective,” Jasey joked.
“But I love you two, and I want to protect you guys from anyone that hurts you,” Chase said seriously before pulling us both into a hug and we all fell backwards onto his bed laughing. Moments like these are when I’m truly grateful for my sister and brother…
