We've seen it all before but this ones different, it's deliberate

I squinted under the bright lights, a beeping rang in my ears. I swept my eyes across the hospital room I was laying in, my head thumping. I instinctively flexed my legs and arms, feeling pain shoot up my legs. I tried to sit up but my body had other ideas, my ribcage protested leaving me in agony. I cussed, laying back down. A rounded woman entered the room with a very serious face, walking towards me and checking the monitors that surrounded me.
"Do you remember what happened?" She asked me sternly. I nodded. I remembered every second. I winced as the last moment before I blacked out replayed in my head.
"Considering the impact, you have pretty mild injuries. You have fractured both legs, the left fracture is more minor. You’ve also got some bruising around your ribs on the right side, but nothing that is untreatable. You will probably suffer from some mild concussion, but again its nothing to worry about. We'll keep you in for a few days, just to be on the safe side. Okay?" I nodded, bewildered. It was a lot to take in.
"Is there anyone we can call for you?"
"No thank-you" I said politely. My mum would still be in work.
"Okay. Well it looks like you've got a visitor"
Alex appeared in the doorway behind her, his school bag slung over his shoulder. He hovered awkwardly, biting down hard on his lip, not managing to keep his eyes on mine.
"Buzz if you need anything" The nurse told me with a smile before walking past Alex, leaving the two of us alone. The gap between us felt a mile wide. He shifted his weight between his feet, I wondered if he was considering turning round and leaving me.
"Hey" I broke the silence first. He sighed, moving towards the armchair placed by my bed.
"Hey" His voice was quiet, unsure. He folded himself down, placing his bag by his feet. I waited for him to speak as I had no idea what to say to him. I still couldn’t manage to look at him for too long, which was stupid considering everything that had happened in the last few days. I guess old habits die hard.
"I..uh.." He said hesitantly, fiddling with his hands in his lap. He was still nibbling away on his lip, his eyes stuck to the floor.
"I didn’t think you'd come here"
"I almost didn’t" He flicked his eyes up to meet mine. I couldn’t work out the emotion in his eyes, they just looked dark and almost conflicted. My brows furrowed faintly, not enough for him to notice. My stomach sunk as I realised this hadn't changed anything, not really. Alex still felt the same way about me. Everybody in school still hated me.
"...Oh" I felt stupid for thinking things could ever change.
"...I just didn’t think you'd want me here" He said, his eyes back on the floor. He tipped his head forward only enough to let his fringe fall over his eyes.
"Why wouldn’t I?" I understood why, I just needed to hear it from him. But he surprised me with his answer.
"Look at yourself Jack. The only reason you're laying there like that is because I was stupid enough to stop in the middle of the road with earphones in" He admitted. He lifted his left hand and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. It took a while for me to process what he had said.
"It's not your fault, the car shouldn’t of been going so fast. And you can't listen to Blink quietly, I know I can't" I regretted my last sentence as soon as it left my lips. I watched his expression, waiting to see if I had said the wrong thing. He looked up to meet my gaze. His lips curved delicately, just enough to form a tiny smile. It was only brief, he soon looked back down to his feet. But it was enough to make my insides warm, I had to concentrate on not breaking into a stupid grin.
"I brought some books with me…. I thought maybe we could work on the assignment a little" He looked up with a hesitant expression.
"Yeah, okay" I answered with a small smile. I hoped this meant he would come back to see me the next day too. He pulled out a range of books, piling them up on the edge of the bed. He stared at me, it took me a while to realise he was waiting for me to choose one. I flushed, hoping he didn’t think I was an idiot.

We sat quietly, like before, taking notes.
"The police were here earlier. They wanted to talk to you but you were still out" Alex said casually. My head snapped up.
"What? Why?"
"It was a hit and run Jack, the driver didn’t stop" I slowly nodded, feeling stupid again. I didn’t understand who could do that, leave someone for dead in the middle of a road.
"What did they want?"
"They just asked me some questions, not that I could answer them very well. I couldn’t even tell them what car it was. It just happened so fast" He tried to shrug it off, but I could tell by the way he hung his head that it bothered him.
"Sorry Jack, I wish I could of helped" He said, his eyes returning to the page in front of him. I could see he wasn’t reading it.
"It's fine Alex, don't worry about it" I hesitantly placed my hand on his shoulder. I felt his shoulder adjust under my hand. Just as hesitantly, he slowly raised his hand and rested it on top of mine, keeping his eyes on the floor. I waited for him to move it… but he didn’t. I didn’t dare move, I didn’t want to. His skin on mine sent a building thrill through me. I didn’t know why. Alex lifted his eyes to meet mine, they were just as deep and confusing as before. I couldn’t work him out.
"I didn’t deserve what you did for me. Thank-you" He barely blinked as he spoke, I couldn’t of looked away if I wanted to. I was completely hypnotised by him. I couldn’t even open my mouth to answer him. My lips parted, but I couldn’t speak. Only a gentle sigh escaped. Alex's eyes fluttered once subtly as it ghosted across his face. He looked at me thoughtfully, his eyes only breaking from mine for a second to scan the rest of my face. He gently lifted his hand from mine, leaving it feeling cold. His finger tips found my forehead, he traced around the heavy graze my fall had left. He swallowed hard, looking at me with guilty eyes.
"JACK?!" I recognised my mothers voice as she came bursting through the doors. The hospital must have gotten through to her. Alex immediately dropped his hand, looking really uncomfortable. My mum rushed to my side, replacing Alex's hand on my forehead. I couldn’t look at her, I was still looking at Alex and trying to work out what the hell just happened.
"I'm okay, I promise" I told her, but she still fussed. Alex cleared his throat, standing to his feet. I didn’t want him to leave, not yet.
"I better go. I'll see you tomorrow I guess" He said quietly, he sounded distracted. I nodded.
"Bye" With that he turned and walked out, leaving me wishing it was tomorrow already.
