The Tenth Land

Chapter 3

When Freefall Nine was taken control of it was more of a shock to us in Ten than anyone else. In fact, anytime any section was taken before us it was a huge shock. Ten was the biggest section and Flyzik made sure we knew that he wanted the worst for us. Why that was? I haven't the faintest idea. Did he have some connection to Ten? I really didn't give two shits. The current problems at hand were more important than the Emperor's sob story of why he was such a dickbag. He probably had some loneliness issues, like a pathetic puppy who misses it's owners too much it can't cope so it must take all it's emotions out on surrounding things.

"Alex, your FTA meeting starts in 10 minutes," my mother came into my room to inform me. FTA stood for "Freefall Ten Army." I hated using the word army. It sounded like we were fighting a bloody battle to the bloody death. Which was partly true but it also made it seem like we had our shit together. And we really didn't. We don't even have a leader for crying out loud! If it were up to me I wouldn't even have this stupid group. But it was decided that one person from each household would be a part of this FTA. Since my mom was getting older and not in the best fighting shape, she was ruled out. Jack lived with us too, as his parents left when Freefall One was first captured. For some reason everyone thought Freefall Ten was going to be the section to save everyone and finally defeat Flyzik, so, if parents left they left their children here. The only reason Jack isn't in the army is because he sucks at "Rock, Paper, Scissors." He was determined to not let me fight but I was determined that I would fight. He should know not to challenge me to that game. Jack, bless his little soul, always picks scissors. Every. Goddamn. Time. He never learns but that's how I ended up in the army. As for a father figure? Yeah, he left with Jack's parents. He never was a good dad so it didn't bother me much. For all I know he could be dead or a Guard. I would hope for the first one, I would never wish being a Guard on my worst enemy. Sure, you get pampered but who would want to work for the Emperor? I wouldn't survive a day as a Guard.

Checking the time on my phone I muttered a,"Shit." I was 5 minutes late to the meeting. Oh well, I really didn't care. I was the youngest in the group but everyone thought I was a genius and would be the one to save the whole land. I found it hilarious. Me? Saving the land? That's like asking an elephant to speak French. I ran out the door barely getting in a goodbye before sprinting to the building where the meeting was held. As much as I didn't care, I also didn't care for being chewed out all the time for being late for everything. When I approached the tall and dreary gray building I noticed it was eerily quiet. Yeah, I know I was on the outside but I could just sense something was off. The worst flooded through my mind. Did Flyzik have a plan to finally destroy us? I yanked the glass double doors open and sprinted up 3 flights of stairs not even bothering with the elevator. As I reached the meeting room, which looked like a normal board room you would see in an office building on the outside but on the inside there was an arsenal of every weapon you could think of, I heard many muffled discussions. Normally when I was late only one person at a time could be heard from outside. Okay...something was very wrong. With a shaking hand I slowly opened the door to meet the eyes of every other person in the room seemingly staring into my soul. No one talked, not even a breath could be heard. The Elder, which was just the oldest person in the FTA slowly approached me. Now, when I say slowly I mean like agonizingly slow. The Elder was a really sweet man in his 80's who was kind of losing his mind. I'm pretty sure he still thought he was preparing for an actual full blown war but his job was just to sit around really. Usually he gives me a piece of candy along with a piece of terrible life advice. But you knew shit was serious if he didn't hand you a mint before speaking. And that's exactly what happened. In his strongest, sanest, old man voice he croaked out, "Alex, we need to speak with you."

Oh shit.
