A Love Like War

Fine, Have It Your Way.

Jack

He fucking saw me. He saw me and his daughter sitting here, and he just ran out the fucking door. I left a five dollar bill on the table for my water, knowing it was too much but I didn’t care. I grabbed Miracle’s diaper bag and flung it over my shoulder, picking her up and holding her on my side as I ran out the door. Once I was out the door, I didn’t see Alex anywhere, he couldn’t have gone that far, could he? I then looked next door at the run down Motel, he has to be there. I started walking over there, then I realized I shouldn’t knock on random doors just to find him.

I went into the office and sat Miracle down on the counter right in front of me, keeping my hands on her tiny waist so she wouldn’t fall over. “Can I help you, sir?” A man spoke as he sat on the other side of the desk.

“Is there someone here under the name Alex or Alexander Gaskarth?” I asked.

“I can’t give out that information. I’m sorry.” He said. I glared at him.

“You heard the story about the missing Baltimore boy?” I asked. He nodded his head. “Yeah, well that boy goes by the name of Alex fucking Gaskarth and I’m his fiance, and this is his daughter. So I suggest you tell me if he is here or not.” I growled. I hated cussing in front of Miracle, but it always helps to get what I want. The guy took out a huge log book and looked under the names.

“He’s in room 204.” He said.

“Well then let’s go. I know damn sure he won’t open the door for me, and I know he will for you.” I said picking Miracle back up and holding in my arms as the guy rounded the desk and I followed him out the door and down the row of Motel rooms, soon reaching door 204. He stopped and looked at me. “Well go on, knock on the door.” He sighed and knocked.

“Mr. Gaskarth, it’s Alan from the front desk.” He said, loud enough for Alex to hear. The door unlatched and soon opened up. Alex stood there, staring at me with fear in his eyes.

“Thank you for the help, Alan.” I said looking over to the guy and walking straight into Alex’s door. He didn’t protest, even though I knew he wanted to. Alex shut the door and sighed as he slid down the door and onto the floor.

“So what are you going to do now? Take me back to fucking Baltimore?” He shot at me. Did he really not want to be found this much?

“I want to. But by the sounds of it, you don’t want to go back.” I said as I sat on the bed with Miracle on my lap.

“Dada.” She said as she made grabby hands as she looked over to Alex’s way. I put her down on the ground and she crawled over to him. He giggled a small bit and picked her up, setting her on his lap.

“Hey Miri. Daddy’s missed you so much.” He spoke.

“You wouldn’t have to have missed her if you just came back.”

“I’m not coming back, Jack.” He stated bluntly.

“Oh, so you just want to leave us like that? We have come so far and you just want to throw it all away just like that? You have a fucking family Alex. You have a daughter that needs you to be there for her. Look, Zack feels awful for what he said. Before I went back home, I heard him in the middle of the night crying because he knows how bad he messed up. Are you really going to throw away your whole life just like that? Act like known of it ever happened? Start over again?”

“That’s exactly what I’m going to do.” He said looking up at me. I can’t believe what I just fucking heard. I got up and walked over to him, picking Miracle up off his lap as he let out a sound of protest. “Give her-” I cut him off.

“Move out of my way. Just pretend none of this happened. You want to start over, forget everything. Fine. You win. Have fun with the rest of your life.” I spoke as I felt tears brim my eye lids. He sighed and got off the ground, moving out of the way of the door. Once he was up, I opened the door up and walked out of it with Miracle on my hip.

“Jack!” I heard Alex call after me. I should have never looked for him. He doesn’t give a shit about anything anymore. Not even his fucking family. I ignored his calls for me and went to the diner parking lot, getting in the back seat to strap Miracle in her seat. Once she was all strapped in, I shut the car down and got in the front driver’s side seat. I didn’t have the chance to start the car before I broke down. Crying my eyes out in the middle of the parking lot with my child in the back seat. If this is what Alex wanted, then that’s what he is going to get.

I started up the car after about ten minutes of crying my eyes out, and pulled out of the diner parking lot. Taking one look back at the beat up Motel. “Miracle, I hate to say it. But that might be the last time we ever see Daddy.” I spoke as more tears fell from my eyes as I drove.
