Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous

Chapter 17

When I woke up, it was already noon. Both Barakats were still asleep. Jack was squished into the wall, snoring softly, while May still clung to me. The latter was a problem, because I really had to pee. I tried my hardest to wiggle out of her grasp without disturbing her, but I ended up falling out of the bed will a dull thump.

May yawned and opened her eyes. “Hmm?” She sat up and looked around confused. When she saw me on the floor though, she giggled.

I rolled my eyes. “Oh no, I'm fine, don't worry about me, kiddo,” I grumbled as I stood up.

She looked at Jack briefly before turning back to me. “Should we get Jacky up?” she whispered.

I glanced at him. He didn't look any better in the dim light of the afternoon, and I could see bruises that had formed overnight. “No, I think Jack needs a bit more sleep. How about I make us some breakfast?” She nodded eagerly. “Ok, first I need to go to the bathroom. Stay in here until I get out, ok?” The very last thing I needed was my parents flipping out about a strange little girl wandering around.

May nodded and hopped out of bed. “Which bag is mine?”

I got her bag out from under Jack's and left her sifting around for clothes. When I came out May had dressed herself in jeans and some blue sparkly mess of a shirt. She was trying desperately to put her hair in a small pony tail holder, but couldn't quite get it. She looked up when the door opened.

“Alex, can you help me?” She held out the elastic band and a brush.

I shrugged. “I can try.”

She smiled. “Thanks.”

I opted for the easy way out and brushed her hair before tying it at the nape of her neck. She inspected my work in the bathroom mirror thoroughly before deeming it satisfactory. We quietly slipped out of my room, being very careful to not wake up Jack, and May held my hand as she followed me to the kitchen.

She looked all around as I helped her up onto a bar stool at the island. “Your house is small,” she observed.

I chuckled as I got out pancake mix. “It's not actually, you and Jack have a very big house.”

“Oh,” she looked around for a minute more while I started the food. “I like your house better,” she decided.

“Oh?”

“Mmhmm. My house is too big. I don't like that.”

I chuckled. “Is that so?”

She nodded. “Yes, I don't like it too big. Everyone's very far away. Hi I'm May!”

I turned to see May waving to a very confused Tom. “Ugh, hi?” He met my eyes and walked over. “What are you babysitting now?”

I rolled my eyes as I put a plate with two pancakes in front of May. “No, this is Jack's little sister. May, this is my brother Tom.”

Her eyes widened. “You have a brother, too?!”

I laughed. “Yes, I have a brother, too. Eat up, kiddo.” She happily dove into her breakfast. I turned back to Tom. “Want pancakes?”

He shook his head. “Yeah sure, whatever, it's too early for this.” He trudged over to the coffee maker and started to brew a pot. “So is your boyfriend here, too?”

“He's not my boyfriend,” I mumbled, the previous night's events leaving a faint trace of heat on my cheeks.

“Mmhmm,” he hummed as he took a seat opposite of May.

“Jacky and Alex are friends,” May said, “but not friends like that other guy-”

“Vic,” I added while flipping pancakes.

“Yeah! Not like Jacky and Vic. Alex is nicer, kinda like Rian.”

“Vic?” Tom asked. “Like Vic Fuentes?”

I shrugged. “I dunno,” I put two more plates of pancakes on the table before shutting off the stove and joining them. “Jack just said his name was Vic and that he's a senior. They apparently 'almost had a thing' or whatever.”

“He yelled a lot when he came over,” May added.

Tom choked on his food before busting out laughing. “That so?” He snorted. “Wow I'll have to break his ba-”

I elbowed him in the ribs. “Watch your mouth, she's five.”

“Five and a half,” she argued.

“Five and a half,” I corrected.

“Oh,” my mom gasped as she stepped in the room, “I didn't realize we had anyone over.” She shot me an irritated look.

“Mom, why don't I bring you some coffee in the other room, yeah?” I grabbed a cup and ushered her down the hall and into a room that so happened to be her office.

“Alexander, what on earth-”

“I know, I know,” I sighed. “That's Jack's little sister.”

“And where's Jack?”

“Upstairs, still asleep.”

“Alexander!” she scolded.

I shuddered. “No, Mom! We didn't... Jack and I are just friends,” For now, “I know I should have told you but everything happened in a rush early this morning. Or maybe it was last night. I don't really know, it was still dark out when I left the house,” I rambled.

“I still don't understand why your friend and his little sister are here.”

I sighed. “I'll give you the full story later, I promise, but I don't want to leave May for too long. All you need to know for now is that they were in trouble, like a lot of trouble, and Jack called me for help. I promise I'll give you details later, but May's only five and she's had a really rough night so I don't know how stable she is.”

She looked wary, but my mother was never one to turn away people in need, especially people that were important to her and her family. “Alright, but later I need a talk with you, and after you and Jack speak I need a talk with the both of you. Deal?”

I hugged her. “Deal. Thanks, Mom.”

Jack:

I woke up groggy, sore, and miserable. I laid still for a few minutes before opening my eyes, then I added disoriented to the list. I sat up stiffly and blinked a few times to get my surroundings to become slightly less of a blur and sighed when I realized that I'd probably ruined a pair of contacts by sleeping in them. I rolled my shoulders as I took in the room. It was certainly not my room. My eyes wandered past a dresser and a half empty closet before they landed on the bags in the corner.

Oh.

I was at Alex's house.

Oh!

My parents were uncontrollable last night so May and I came here.

OH! I shot up in a panic.

I nearly screwed Alex last night!

My head whipped around looking for my sister and my best friend(?) setting off a little more of a panic until I heard voices downstairs. I made myself breathe normally. They're ok.

I took a moment more to clear my head, then decided my contacts were too dry and threw them away after getting my glasses from my bag. I hastily wiped the lenses with my shirt and slid them on my nose. When the world wasn't completely blurry anymore, I took notice of my appearance.

“Oh god,” I groaned, tilting my head to see the damage from every angle.

I had a split in the corner of my upper lip that pointed to a blue and purple bruise just above it on my cheek bone. Both my eyes had deep purple circles under them, and I was pretty sure my nose was not on the right angle, either. My jaw was sore, but it only had a small cut where the punch had veered and swayed with my drunk father and the jewel from his wedding ring had scratched the skin. Then, I noticed the splotches of color poking out of my collar. I ripped off my shirt to see my neck and shoulder splattered in reds and purples. I ran my hand over the distinct red dots where Alex had nipped a bit too hard above my collarbone. There is no coming back from this.

I shook my head as I tugged my shirt back on. No, stop thinking like that. He'll understand, this is Alex. He'll understand. What I wanted him to understand, though, I wasn't quite sure of. I set my glasses on the counter top and set to work. I wiggled my nose gently and was happy to wince and know it hadn't started to set yet. I pulled it straight down so that it would fall back in place and poked at it until I was certain that's how it was before. I splashed some cool water on my face to help get my head together before I slid my glasses back on and shuffled down the stairs.

I found my sister sitting on Alex's couch watching cartoons. Her head popped up when noticed me coming. “Jacky!” she smiled, running up to meet me.

I grinned and pressed a kiss to her hair. “Hey baby, how are you?”

“Good! Alex made pancakes! Did you know Alex has a big brother too?!”

I chuckled. “Yes, I did. Where's Alex?”

She shrugged, disappointed in my indifference to Alex's family. “Kitchen.” She skipped back to the couch and ignored me in favor of whatever was on.

I shyly poked my head in the kitchen. Alex and Tom – previously speaking in hushed tones – looked my way. Each had a hot cup of coffee cradled in their hands. Alex looked me over slowly before offering me a sad smile and abandoning his cup at the island to make another.

“Morning Jack, you missed a riveting discussion of your – ahemintimate activities last night,” Tom snickered as I took the seat next to the one Alex had been occupying.

Alex sighed as he took his seat again and placed a fresh cup of coffee in front of me. “No, you missed Tom whining like a baby to get me to say where I got these hickies from.” I felt my face flush slightly, and hid it by sipping my drink.

“Aha! So you admit they're hickies!” Tom exclaimed.

“N-no, I-” Alex sputtered, embarrassed.

“Stop being jealous just 'cause you're not getting any and your little brother is,” I grumbled.

Alex snickered as Tom gasped. Melodramatic little shit. “That's bull-!” His brother and I both shushed him, pointing to May who was sat just in the other room. “That's bullshit,” Tom muttered under his breath. “I get plenty.”

“Sure you do.”

He scowled at me. “I don't have to take this in my own kitchen!” he huffed before turning and disappearing up the stairs.

I turned to Alex to see his eyes already on my, scanning my injuries. I dropped my eyes to my lap.

“How ya feeling?” he asked quietly, brushing his thumb under the bruise on my cheek.

I shrugged. “I've been worse.”

He shook his head. “Liar.” His fingers trailed down, past the cut on my jaw, to a spot above my collar. “What the,” he tugged my collar back and gasped. “Did I do that?” he whispered. His fingers brushed the tender spot of red dots above my collarbone.

I chuckled. “Yeah, looks like I did a pretty solid number on you, too,” I said quietly, glancing at the color splotches on his neck.

He shook his head with a laugh. “Oh no, you did more than that, jackass.” He tugged down his collar to reveal dark bruises in the distinct shape of teeth, specifically mine.

“Oh my god!” Alex just laughed as I gaped at the mark I'd made, tracing it's edges with my index finger. He drew in a sharp breath through his teeth when I brushed it with my thumb. “Sorry! Sorry.” I drew my hand back and wrapped both of them securely around my mug. “We should talk about that.”

He nodded. “We should, and we will. First, you're going to eat some breakfast, and I'm going to take May to her playdate with Julie.”

“Fuck,” I sighed, wiping a hand down my face. “I completely forgot about that.”

He laughed. “May certainly didn't. I got the address from your phone. You eat and take a few minutes to yourself. Mom and Dad went out, but Tom is sulking upstairs if you need anything.” I could see him biting the inside of his bottom lip, but before I could question it, he pressed a kiss to my cheek. My whole face went up in flames. “I'll see you in five.”

I watched as Alex hurried to put his cup in the sink before going to the living room to collect May. She waved to me through the doorway as she sauntered out to Alex's car. When they left, I blew out a breath. I had some serious thinking to do in five minutes.
