It could be worse. I sighed as I flopped onto my bed. It was like falling into a sun warmed cloud as the blankets puffed up around me momentarily before settling back down. Then it was just warm from my dryer-fresh sheets.

“Alexander, is your room unpacked yet?” my mother called from down the hall.

I glanced around at the sealed boxes littering the floor. I grabbed the closest box marked “clothes”, ripped the tape off, and dumped its contents on the floor. I kicked two of the hoodies to the other side of the room. Just like home. “Yep.”

She glanced in as she passed. “I want it done by tomorrow,” she chuckled without even stopping as she disappeared down the stairs.

I groaned. I didn't really want to move in the first place. Nothing was wrong with our lives. We didn't need to move so far away. We didn't need a huge house. We certainly didn't need to move to the richest town in Baltimore. I didn't even know how to be rich. But my mom got promoted, and so we packed up our lives and moved.

There was suddenly weight on my back. “This sucks man.”

I swatted at my older brother's head. “Tom, get the fuck off of me you fat bastard.”

He chuckled but rolled to lay beside me, staring at my new ceiling while my face remained buried in the familiar sheets. “You excited for school?”

“Oh yes, I'm absolutely elated to go into my junior year completely alone, in a completely foreign place, surrounded by rich brats who grew up together. I can't even contain my excitement, Tom.”

He snorted. “Alright, tone down the sass, it was a simple question. I'm not happy about it either, but look on the bright side of things, it's a fresh start.”

I flipped him off. “I don't want a fresh start. I want to go home.”
