Thirty-Eight

With the huge success at the bonfire, I was glad my brothers liked Alex. I was surprised by the fact Alex went the extra mile with my family and asked my dad for his blessing to propose to me.
I woke up, and like any other day, I booked it for the bathroom and threw up. Luckily, my brothers and my dad were out fishing while myself, Alex, my sister-in-laws, Natalie, Matthew, Maggie, and my mom were the only ones left at the house. Alex had followed after me to the bathroom to make sure I was okay after going through the morning sickness routine again. God I cannot wait to stop throwing up first thing in the morning.
“Bonnie, are you alright? I saw Alex run in after you and heard you throwing up,” it was my mom. She can’t find out yet. She’d ruin the entire idea of surprising everyone at dinner before we’d fly out to Baltimore.
“She’s fine,” Alex lied for me.
“Bonnie if you’re worried about your father finding out, you can trust me, I honor girl code even though I am your mother,” my mom insisted.
“Let her in, Alex,” I groaned between heaves.
“Can we trust you complete, Mrs. Howell,” Alex asked as he closed the door.
“Of course you can. Now call me Bianca, Alex. You will be my son-in-law in a few months,” Mom insisted.
“I’m dealing with morning sickness,” I told her, making her face twist in horror.
“It’s not his, I promise. The baby is mine. She’s about to start her second month,” Alex explained.
“So you got pregnant not long after you started dating, I take it,” Mom asked.
“Yeah, the condom failed when we did for the first time together,” I told her before I started brushing my teeth.
“Is the engagement a shotgun wedding,” Mom asked, glaring at Alex.
“No, I really do love her and I want her to be my wife, regardless of the baby. I wanted to propose sooner, but it was too early in our relationship when I wanted to. So I gave her a promise ring instead, which meant I was going to propose when the time was right,” Alex explained as I showed my promise ring on my right ring finger.
“Thank you for being honest. I will keep it between us. Make sure you tell everyone at dinner. Once you know your due date, you give me a call so I can plan a baby shower for the two of you. I want to make sure you guys get everything you need for the baby,” Mom hugged me while I still had my toothbrush in my mouth and hugged Alex on her way out.
After the entire incident in the bathroom, I took Alex out for a stroll through my neighborhood. I wanted to show him everything I could. I wanted him to see all of my favorite places to hang out around town. I wanted him to see where I grew up like how he showed me when we were in Towson a few weeks ago when my mind was shattering.
“So this is my old elementary school,” I said as we walked up to the school that had kids sitting in their little desks learning simple things that I had learned many years ago. I thought about how our baby’s education would go. Would I stay behind while Alex tours, or would I homeschool our baby so we can travel together?
“Wow, I think when we go to the UK I can take us on a side trip to show you where I spent my school days in Essex,” Alex commented at noticing how deep in thought I was about our family’s future.
“I’d love to see where you spent some of your childhood, Alex,” I told him.
“You’re thinking about how we’ll school our baby, aren’t you,” he asked.
“I’m not sure what to decide for our baby,” I told him the truth.
“We’ll worry about it when our little munchkin is getting ready to go to school for the first time. For now, let’s focus on being happy and getting ready to move you into your new home after spending time with your family. Deal,” Alex smiled warmly to me and I forgot all about my worries for the future.
My dad and brothers finally came and we started getting ready for dinner. Alex was making sure we had everything we brought packed back up and loaded into the car since we were leaving right after dinner to make it over to the airport after we eat.
I helped Mom set out all the food and we began to eat. Alex and I sat next to each other while my brothers sat with their significant other. Mom and Dad took the seats and the two ends of the table. Turned out that my mom wanted to fatten up my fiancé with some of her family’s Italian recipes; since the food was not only good but Alex kept diving in for more helpings. I shook my head at how greedy he became over my mom’s cooking.
“Alex, relax will you. I can make these recipes too,” I told him.
“You cook,” he asked.
“Yes I do, Nyssa bakes I cook,” I told him.
“She’s really good. She picked up on these recipes rather quickly,” my mom commented.
“Can I change the subject now? I wish to discuss something a little more important than food,” I started, “My engagement wasn’t the only thing Alex and I wanted to share with you guys.”
“What do you mean, by that Bonnie,” Travis asked.
“The thing is, Alex and I are not only getting married,” I paused for a moment, “We’re also expecting a baby.”
“What the fuck,” Dustin nearly choked on his food.
“Dustin, watch you language,” my mother scolded him.
“Bonnie, is it that guy that,” my dad trailed off, remembering what happened in Chicago.
“No, James, it’s my baby. Bonnie’s about to start her second month,” Alex told him.
“I hope you’re ready for the responsibility of a baby, Bonnie. With your anxiety, you’ll have to put your baby first before your fears,” Travis warned.
“I understand that. Alex does too. We’ll be helping each other through this entirely new chapter in our relationship,” I told him.
“I hope so. If not, I’ll try to get a transfer to go to Baltimore if you need more help with anything. You are my baby sister and all,” Bryan offered.
“We’ll manage, Bryan. My parents will help Bonnie out if she decides to stay home after the baby is born,” Alex told him.
The flight to Baltimore was finally over. Alex and I were walking through the main lobby, our luggage in hand looking for our ride. We finally found the lanky skunk haired best friend of my fiancé and my best friend waiting for us. From the smiles on their faces, I knew that the darkest chapter of mine and Alex’s relationship was over and so was theirs.
Now all that was left was to get me settled into my new home, get ready to fly to the UK, and get ready to get married and have my baby with Alex by my side. I was never going to let this man go. I was going live out the rest of my life with him. He is my hero. He is my soul mate. He is my lost boy. My “everything better” plan, and we were off to Neverland.
