Chapter 6

Jack and I have been spending a lot of time together lately. He says he has been telling Vic but I don’t think he has been only because when Jack gets messages from Vic, he either ignores him or he has to leave and go home.

Jack has been picking me up for work seeing as my damn car broke down a week ago and I haven’t had the money to buy a new one nor the time to get a loan because of how busy I have been packing and getting ready to move tomorrow.

I found a two roomed apartment just outside of the city not too far from Jack’s place. He has been a big help actually. He has been coming over in the afternoons even when I try and convince him to go home and he is helping me pack. He has been a big help with Melody too, she adores him, looks up to him and I am glad she does because I look up to him too.

Jack is coming to pick Melody and I up tonight so we can all go out for dinner. Zack, Jasmine, Rian, Cass and even Vic will be there which I am fine with but Vic still looks at me like I am the devil. I was putting Melody in her nice jumper which Jack had brought her when the doorbell rang. I heard Mum open the door and Jack great her lovingly. He really has warmed up to everyone.

He made his way through the doorway of the lounge and stopped at the entrance. I stood up and smiled to him as Melody ran over to him, embracing his legs in a big hug. He picked her up and tickled her slightly while she squealed.

‘Jack, she will be hyper if you do that.’ I said as I grabbed my coat and placed it on.

‘Well, she is your problem if that happens.’ He replied.

‘No way. You worked her up and I am sure she loves you more than me.’ I said.

‘Is that true miss?’ He questioned looking at Melody. She nodded her head yes and giggled. A horn was honked from outside and all of us looked to the door.

‘I guess that is Vic. We better get going.’ Jack replied before walking out the door. I grabbed Melody’s baby seat and closed the door behind me, wishing my mother a good night.

Jack was playing areophane’s with Melody while I walked to the car. Vic was sat in the passenger’s seat and watched my every step. I opened the back door to the car and started to put the seat in.

‘Isn’t she too old to have one of those things?’ Vic said with eyes on Jack.

‘The legal age for a child to sit without a seat is 7 so no, she isn’t too old.’ I replied.

‘If I was you, I wouldn’t worry about it.’ He said.

‘Well, I don’t want my little one getting hurt if we have a crash or get Jack in trouble if we get pulled over by the police thank you very much.’ I replied.

‘Whatever.’ Vic said and left the conversation there. Jack walked over with a hyper looking Melody and handed her to me.

‘There you are. One hyped up child.’ He said as he opened his door.

‘And one puffed out adult.’ I replied making myself giggle and Jack laugh. He agreed with a nod.

I buckled Melody in and moved around the car so I could sit in the car myself. I sat behind Vic who had his seat all the way back. I didn’t want to ask so I left it at that. On the way to the restaurant, Melody was asking me many questions.

‘Daddy, who is he?’ She questioned, pointing to Vic. He turned around and smiled to her.

‘Melody, this is Vic. He is Jack’s boyfriend.’ I replied.

‘So they are like you and James?’ She questioned.

‘Yes honey, like that.’ I replied. The name of this mysterious man got Jack’s attention.

‘James, from the Café?’ Jack replied.

‘Yeah. Haha.’ I said as I looked out the window.

‘How long?’ He replied.

‘Well, about a week or two. Very recent.’ I replied.

‘Well, congratulations.’ Jack said nodding his head, not looking back to me.

‘Yeah, congratulations.’ Vic also said as his hand moved over to Jack’s hand.

‘Congratulations!’ Melody said in a high pitched yell. We all laughed at her spontaneous way before we sat in silence for the rest of the way.

We pulled up at the restaurant and everyone else was waiting outside for us. I hopped out and walked out to unbuckle Melody who jumped up out of her seat and into my arms. She had no idea who these people were so she has become all shy. I walked over to the group and smiled to everyone. They all awed to the little girl in my arms.

‘This must be Melody.’ Cass said.

‘This is indeed little miss Melody. Melody, can you look at the people please?’ Melody moved her head to face everyone. ‘So this is Cass and Rian. This is Zack and Jasmine. Give them a wave?’ I asked. She waved to them and smiled before we all entered the restaurant.

We were seated and had ordered our food ordered in a matter of time. The service was amazing so far. Melody has made great friends with Cass but has warmed up to everyone, more than I have.

We were just about to eat some food when a tray of champagne glasses came around. We all looked around to each other having no idea what was going on. That was until Jack stood up. He smiled to everyone and started speaking.

‘Hi everyone, thank you for joining us tonight. I have a few things I wish to say. Firstly, I want to welcome back Alex to our group, it has been a long 7 years without you and we are all glad that you decided to come back to our little town. Secondly, you brought us the most adorable person ever. Melody, you are a good friend to all of us and we can’t wait to see you grow up with us by your side. Thirdly, I am happy to announce that as of tomorrow, we will be practicing in Rian’s garage to start writing and mixing music for the band All Time Low but lastly, we are all here tonight to celebrate such an amazing person. Tonight is Vic’s birthday dinner, he wanted to spend it with all of you before we have a party back home tonight. I have your birthday gift here for you baby.’ Jack said.

Jack placed his glass on the table and smiled to Vic and started kneeling down to be on one knee. Once he had his one knee on the ground, he pulled out a little black box and opened it. It showed a gold band and spoke the words ‘will you marry me?’

Everyone was silent, staring at Vic for his answer. Vic was staring at Jack with a blank stare before he slowly started nodding his head. Vic repeatedly said yes as Jack placed the ring onto his finger.
I was sat there silently, unaware of what just happened. How was I meant to take this, I was happy to know that Jack was happy but I felt something in my heart break and I looked to Melody who was smiling to me. I smiled back before standing up, picking up Melody and walking to the couple and celebrating their happiness.

The night went slower than ever but Melody was getting tired and I thought it would be a good idea to head home. Jack offered to take us home which I didn’t decline on. Vic got a lift back with Zack anyway so that was even better.

We drove in silence, not a word spoken about anything. Melody was asleep in her seat in the back so I think we were afraid to wake her. Jack pulled into the driveway and we just sat there, in silence. I didn’t want to leave him because I know things will be much different when I leave. He will just be a boss, a friend and that is all.

‘Thank you Jack.’ I said as I opened the door to the car. I hoped out and grabbed my sleeping beauty and started to head for the door. I heard the engine cut off and heard Jack get out. I got to the door and opened it, texting Mum in advance so the door was unlocked. Jack followed me in and placed the car seat next to the door.

‘You are welcome Alex.’ He said as I walked to the room. I placed Melody in bed before walking back out into the lounge room. Jack was stood near the door still.

‘Jack, why are you still here?’ I questioned. Jack looked at me for a minute before he leant in and kissed me. I couldn’t help but melt under his touch but realizing what was taking place, I pulled back and shook my head.

‘No Jack. If you don’t recall you just got engaged.’ I said as I walked backwards.

‘Alex, I am so sorry for everything.’ Jack said before he walked away.

‘Goodbye Jack.’ I said before I closed the door. I walked to the couch and sat down, bringing my knees to my chest. I am so confused about what just happened, about the engagement. I feel so hurt and I know I shouldn’t be but I can’t help this feeling. I feel lost without Jack in my life. He makes everything so clear. I sat there and cried for what seemed like a very long time.

Hah, I knew it, stupid Jack still thinks he's in love with Vic! Why? On a side note, an Uber driver can't decide the price, its deducted from your credit card by Uber.
