Thanks To You!

I called Jack the next day after we bumped into him at the shops and organized for him to join us for lunch today, so three days ago. He asked if he could bring Vic but I really didn’t want him to be around Melody. I still don’t like Vic, not after everything he caused me in high school, he still seems like a bad person to this day.

I was making sandwiches when I heard the doorbell rang. I heard the tiny patters of feet run to the door as I was walking to the door. When I reached the hallway, Melody was standing at the door, looking back to me with happy eyes.

‘Go on then sweetie.’ I said before she jumped at the door, opening it. I saw her look up to see Jack standing there with a smile on his face. His eyes didn’t connect with melody at all. He looked at me which a big smile and I smiled back.

‘Hi Mr Jack!’ Melody said gaining his attention.

‘Hey there Melody, are you going to invite me in?’ Jack said with a smirk.

‘Come in, come in.’ She said. Jack walked through the door and walked towards me. He pulled his hand out from his back and handed me an envelope. I looked at it then to his face.

‘What is this?’ I asked.

‘It’s for Melody’s school funds. I know she starts soon so..’ He replied.

‘No, I cant take that from you. I have enough. Please, take it back.’ I insisted, placing the envelope back into his hands. I walked my way back to the kitchen to continue making sandwiches.

‘Alex, please. Take it, it is the least I can do. I owe you so much, for what you did in high school.’ He said, placing it on the table.

I kept making the sandwiches, trying to hold back tears. I put the knife down and put on hand over my eyes. The other held me up against the counter.

‘Melody, do you know where daddy’s guitar is?’ I heard Jack whisper.

‘In his room.’ She whispered back.

‘I’ll go get it and you go give daddy a big hug.’ He said before I heard him walking off. The patter of little feet stopped behind me.

I removed my hand from my eyes and looked down. She smiled up to me and opened her arms out. I knelt down and she wrapped them around me.

I sat myself down on the floor and put my head on Melody’s shoulder. The tears dripping onto her shirt. She patted my back before whispering.

‘I love you daddy. Why are you sad?’ She asked. I looked at her and smiled.

‘Because Jack is being so nice to me and I was a big meany.’ I explained. She frowned to me.
‘You shouldn’t be mean daddy. Mr Jack is fun. You always tell me to say sorry, you should say sorry.’ She pointed out. I nodded my head before kissing her forehead. She cuddled into my chest and we sat in quiet before Jack walked back in.

He sat down next to me and smiled before strumming the chords to Oh, Calamity, the song I wrote back in school.

‘How do you know the chords?’ I questioned.

‘You left the papers. I was cleaning them up and well, yeah. You left them. I learnt it because it really was a beautiful song and I wanted to be able to play it for you one day.’ He admitted, blushing slightly.

‘I think that is awesome.’ I said, smiling back.

‘Look Alex, please don’t think you were being an a-s-s-h-o-l-e back in school. You were scared and I know things aren’t going too well for you so I wanted to help.’ He said.

‘Thank you Jack. You really are the only one who doesn’t seem to have a problem with me being a father.’ I replied.

‘Why would anyone be mad at you for raising a beautiful little girl.’ Jack said.

‘Can you keep playing Mr Jack?’ Melody asked. Jack smiled before looking to me.

‘As long as daddy sings.’ He said. I shook my head no and protested. Melody got off my lap and stood in front of me, jumping up and down, yelling for me to sing.

‘Fine! I’ll sing.’ I said, giving in. Melody screamed a little before watching Jack’s fingers move up and down while strumming the guitar. He was still playing Oh, Calamity.

I started singing while Jack played and Melody jumped and danced. Her face was lit up; I haven’t seen her this happy in a long time. Once the song finished, she clapped and cheered. I looked to Jack who had a wide smile on his face.

‘You know how I said starting a band would be a terrible idea, I take that back. I think, it is a great idea. Would you be interested?’ He questioned.

‘You know what Jack. I would love too. I think that being in a band would be so much fun. Do you think Rian and Zack would want to join?’ I replied.

‘So, okay, here is the thing. We have formed a little group. Vic was the singer but he formed a group with his brother and two friends so we are short a front man plus guitarist and I think you would fit in better than what Vic did. Don’t tell him I said that.’ Jack answered.

‘I would love to join. Thank you Jack, but I think this will be a hobby for now, I need to work. I need to get money for a house and stuff.’ I stated.

‘For now, it is a hobby so that’s fine. We have a job opening at the office if you want to apply. I will be looking over the applications so I could put in a good word for you, if you want?’ He asked.

‘I think I already have applied for there, before I knew you and Zack worked there. I would just love any sort of job at the moment, I want to be able to move out of this house and buy this little one here some new things.’ I answered.

‘I’ll see what I can do.’ Jack said.

The rest of the day was spent at the park, where Melody, Jack and I played hide-and-seek and ate our sandwiches. Jack had to leave when he got a phone call from Vic, saying he wanted Jack to come home right away once he heard that he was with us.

Vic is very protective over Jack and it has me a little worried for Jack’s safety.
