Chapter 15

After telling Jack to stay put in the car, I knew very well that he wasn't going to.

I approached the door and turned the doorknob, opening the door. When I walked in, Vic was staring at me from the couch.

‘What the fuck are you doing here?’ he yelled.

‘And what the fuck is wrong with you? I questioned.

‘Answer my question Alex. Why are you here and where is Jack?’

‘Jack is in the car. You need to leave the house Vic. He has called the cops.’ I threatened.

‘I don’t give a fuck anymore. They can take me away but Jack needs to pay.’ He yelled, standing up. I took a step back as Vic pulled out a gun and slammed it on the coffee table.

‘Things need to end Alex. Now you need to move out my way!’ Vic yelled as stared at me with wide eyes. I shook my head and stood my ground.

‘Vic, we can talk about this. It doesn't have to go this way.’ I tried reasoning with him.

‘We have done enough talking.' Vic said as he moved his hand towards the gun.

My body went into survival mode and I jumped towards Vic, tackling him onto the couch. The gun between us. I punched Vic in the face, trying to get him to drop the gun.

As we wrestled between each other, I heard the gun clock back before a loud bang surrounded the room. As I pushed myself off Vic, I looked down at Vic who was bleeding out from his stomach.

I grabbed the gun and pushed it aside before putting pressure onto Vic's wound.

‘If I can't have him, you can't either.’ Vic said, laughing as he choked on blood.

As I stared at him in disbelief, Jack ran inside and gasped. He ran over and sat down next to me, helping me as we both started applying pressure.

‘You shot him?’ Jack questioned in utter shock.

‘He shot himself but it doesn't look like it at all.’ I replied.

Vic was still bleeding out a lot and was still trying to laugh.

The next moment, two police officers barged in, guns held in front of them as they looked to us. One officer called for an ambulance while the other came over to assess the situation.

About five minutes had passed before the ambulance arrived at the house. Jack and I moved away as the paramedics did their work to slow the bleeding. Once they had done that, they placed Vic onto a stretcher before transporting him to the nearest hospital.

As Jack and I sat on his couch, gathering our thoughts, the two police officers came over, standing front of us.

‘We will need you to come down to the station for questioning.’ One stated.

We both nodded our head and stood up and walked out the house following the police. Jack and I still haven’t had the opportunity to clean ourselves up yet, which is a bit disturbing and even bad for me.

We sat in the back of the police car as it drove down the streets, Jack and I sharing an occasional glance to one another from time to time. The only thing I could think about is if Vic is okay and more what he will say to the police. Every way I looked at it, it looks bad.

The car stopped and the officers got out, opening our doors for us to exit. They guided us in with their hand on one of our arms. They walked us out into the back before placing us in separate rooms. Jack looked back at me before the police office closed the door on him.
I was guided into a room where I was told to sit on the other side of the table, facing the door. the officer left once I was seated.

It seemed like forever but eventually two men in suits walked in. They showed emotion as they took the seats in front of me. Pulling out a note pad each, one cleaned his throat before speaking.

‘Good evening. I’m detective John McLean and this is detective Steve Martin. We just want to ask you a few questions regarding the incident that happened earlier today.’ Detective McLean said.

‘Can you please state your name and age please.’ Detective Martin asked.

‘Alexander Gaskarth and I am 23 years old.’ I replied.

‘Mr Gaskarth, can you explain to me what happened today.’

‘My friend, Jack Barakat came to my house about 1pm this afternoon after he was attacked by Vic Fuentes. I was taking Jack back to his house for support in case Vic was still there and he was. I went inside to see what they issue was and told Jack to call the police. Which he did. But when I got inside, Vic was sitting on the couch, staring at the door. I informed Vic that he needed to leave and that Jack had called the police. Vic then stood up and slammed a gun onto the table. I moved backwards, trying to talk to him but he began arguing. Next minute, he was reaching for the gun and I tried to stop him from getting it. The gun was between us as I wrestled him. I got one punch in before he pulled the trigger. Of course, I thought that I had just been shot but when I moved back, the blood wasn’t coming for me but for him. He had shot himself.’ I stated.

‘You didn’t touch the gun?’ Detective Martin asked.

‘I moved the gun away from him once he was on the floor, making sure he couldn’t reach it again.’ I replied.

‘This doesn’t look good on your behalf, I will tell you that now. I think you should get yourself a lawyer.’ The detective replied.

‘Is it possible to wash this off my hands please?’ I looked to them. They nodded their heads before an officer came into the room and escorted me to a bathroom. I walked up to the sink and looked myself in the mirror. I could see the stress in my eyes, it was worrying.

As I looked down at the sink, I turned the tap on, placing my hands under the water as it rushed over my hands at a steady pace. The water was cold, giving me chills as I watched the blood drain away. I squirted soap into my hands from the dispense, rubbing my hands together.

I heard the door open and close again, afraid to look up, I continued to wash my hands. Jack spoke softly, too soft to hear. I couldn’t help but look over to him. He was still covered in blood also.

‘What did you say Jack?’ I asked.

‘How was your interview? How are you doing?’ He asked, louder this time.

‘Shit. Shit, shit, shit. Even the detectives said that it doesn’t look good and once they get the DNA results back from the gun, I am screwed. I was told that I need a lawyer.’ I replied.

‘I’ll be your lawyer.’ Jack said with no hesitation.

‘I can pay you.’ I replied.

‘No, that isn’t necessary. Let’s just make sure you are innocent.’ Jack replied.

Before I could speak, an officer walked in and mentioned for us that we were free to go home. We smiled to each other once my hands seemed clean, I left the bathroom and waited for Jack to leave also. I called Rian to pick us up and he was going to be here in 5 so Jack and I just had to wait out the front of the station.

We sat on the curb, watching as cars drove past. The sun was almost down, the sky was a shade of pink and the clouds were rolling in. the silence between Jack and I was uncomfortable, with everything that happened today, I’m not surprised.

As I watched the clouds move slowly over our heads, Jack moved closer to me, placing an arm around my shoulder. He looked to me and smiled, no words needing to be said.

I rested my head down on his shoulder and closed my eyes, hoping that when I open them, that today was a dream and I was going to wake up with Melody jumping on me. But when I opened my eyes to the sound of a horn, I was still in the same place with the same possibilities.

I moved from Jack’s shoulder and stood up. We walked to Rian’s car where he sat quietly, smiling to us as we got in. Jack sat in the back, giving me the front. The drive was quiet, so quiet that I decided to turn on the radio. In that moment, I wish I hadn’t.

‘There has been a shooting in the south tonight with one man being rushed to hospital. The victim has been identified as Victor Fuentes who is currently in a stable condition in hospital. The reported suspects Alexander Gaskarth and Jack Barakat where taken in for questioning but no charges have yet been laid.’ I groaned as I turned the radio off again.

‘I didn’t shoot him. I promise.’ I pleaded with Rian, who looked unsure what to believe.

‘You don’t have to explain yourself to me Alex. We all know there was something wrong with Vic.’ He replied.

We sat in silence until we got to my mum’s house, where the light was on out front. I thanked Jack and Rian before getting out and walking to the door where I stood, just staring. I heard Rian’s car drive away as I continued to stare.

I braced myself, closing my eyes and taking in a deep breath before turning the door knob and pushing the door open. I looked around, not hearing anyone.

‘Hello?’ I semi-yelled as the door closed behind me.

‘Dad!’ Melody yelled as she ran to me from the lounge room. I smiled and almost broke down as I saw her hugging my legs. I bent myself a little bit before I picked her up to my height.

I walked us into the room she ran from, where my mother was sitting, tissue in hand as she looked at me with tears falling down her face.

‘Let’s talk later.’ I said quietly. She nodded her head before standing from the couch and walking past me. She kissed my cheek before walking to the kitchen.

Melody, mum and I ate dinner like everything was fine. For the most part, it was just to make sure Melody knew everything was okay. Now I am putting Melody to bed, she is smiling to me as she lies there in our shared bed.

‘Alright honey. It’s time for bed. Time to settle down.’ I said as I sat on the edge of the bed. She giggled as she looked to me.

‘Melody, I’m serious. No messing around.’ I said, feeling myself getting irritated.

‘Okay daddy. Good night.’ She said.

‘I’m sorry baby. I love you.’

‘I love you daddy.’ She said sweetly. I moved and kissed her head before walking to the door, turning the light off before closing the door over slightly before making my way back down to mum.

She was sat on the couch, awaiting my return, while she stared blankly into the distance.

‘Mum… let me explain.’ I said as I sat on the other side of the couch.

‘You didn’t do it. I know you didn’t do it. Because you can’t do something like that.’ She said, sounding like she was trying to convince herself.

‘But I didn’t do it mum. he held the gun between us while we were fighting and pulled the trigger while the gun was pointed at him!’ I defended myself.

She looked at me in shock and shook her head in disbelief.

‘This doesn’t look good Alex. Not good at all. You didn’t touch the gun, right?’ She questioned.

‘I moved it away from him when he was on the floor.’ I replied.

‘We should get you a lawyer and fight this.’ She replied as she picked up her phone to start looking.

‘I already have one and he is going to do it for free, as much as I want to pay.’ I stated.

‘Jack?’ She asked, looking to me.

I nodded my head and smiled to her. We sat in silence, her hand holding mine very tight. I was about to speak before there was a knock at the door. it was late so I decided to answer it.
When I opened the door, there was two police officers standing at the door.

‘Alexander Gaskarth, you are under arrest for the murder of Vic Fuentes.’
