A Handful of Moments

Guilt

I stared blankly at the wall in front of me. There was nothing particularly interesting about it, but I'd rather be thinking of something simple and plain than the mess we were in now. The danger I put my sister through.
"Don't you think you should call your mom?" I was shaking my head before Rian even finished his sentence.
"She would just freak out. Rina doesn’t need that right now" I didn’t look at him, only shifting my gaze to the floor. Of course they would know at some point, but Rina needed her rest. I needed to work out how to handle this for the best. I sighed, resting my head in my hands. Me, Rian and Jack were sat in the waiting room, very little conversation passing between us. Rina and Alex were asleep in the Rina's allocated room. He had barely left her side since we'd arrived. I owed him so much. Something else I needed to work out, how I could possibly repay him.
"Where'd we go from here?" Jack spoke up. He was clearly shaken, unable to eat the food Rian brought back. On any other day he would of eaten his own in seconds and then everyone elses.
"I want her to come stay with me, just until she's back to normal. I owe her that much" I replied, still unable to raise my eyes further than the floor.
"Whether she will want to… I don’t know. I cant force her" I shrugged. The seat next to me became occupied, a hand appeared on my shoulder.
"Matt. This isn't your fault. These things happen, it's horrific… but they happen" Rian said kindly. I wish I could believe him. The fact was, this could have been so easily prevented.
"She won't blame you for this, no one will" Zack spoke up for the first time. I looked up to meet his gaze, he was sat directly opposite to me. I held his stare for a moment before nodding. I could tell he was being genuine.
"I hope you're right" I say quietly. Rian flashed me a small smile before dropping his hand from my shoulder. We continued to sit in silence until Alex appeared at the door half asleep.
"She's awake" He announced sleepily. The others rose out of their seats.
"You know what guys, do you mind if I have a minute to talk to her? On my own?" They sunk back into their seats with understanding smiles. I thanked them briefly and walked past Alex nervously. What do I say to her? She turned to face me when I entered the room, the door swinging behind me. She still looked pretty fragile. She smiled at me sweetly, much more sweetly than I deserved.
"Hey Matt" She patted the recliner next to her bed. I forced a smile and sat down, taking her hand in mine.
"How are you feeling?" I asked as I watched every move on her face.
"Better" She answered with a small nod, her smile still in place.
"Do you have any idea how this happ-" I began to ask. I felt her hand tense beneath mine, curling into a tight ball.
"Matt, I don’t want to think about it right now" She interrupted me, her warm expression replaced by a mixture sadness and fear. I thought about pressing her for a better answer, telling her she needed to think about it. That the scumbag that did this to her had to suffer for it. But instead I nodded. I just wanted her to be happy Rina again. I dropped my eyes to the floor tiles, not really knowing what to say.
"Rina, I want you to come stay with me" I risked a look at her face, not really sure what to expect. I had no idea how she would react. She thought about it for a moment, before meeting my gaze.
"Okay" She said simply with a shy smile.
"It would be nice to actually spend some time with you, act like I actually have a brother" She joked with a playful expression. I couldn’t help but smile widely at her.
"Why do you look so surprised?" She asked. There was no point in lying.
"I don’t know. I wasn’t sure if you'd want to stay with me after this" I shrug, moving my eyes to my hand still resting on hers. I could feel her eyes on my face, but I didn’t dare meet them.
"He thinks it's his fault" Jack's voice filled the room from behind me, I hadn't heard him come in.
"Is he right? You seriously think that?" Rina asked, her voice had become a lot softer. I nodded, keeping my eyes down.
"Well that's stupid. I should've known better than to accept strange drinks from strange men. I certainly won't be doing that again. Well… except ones from Jack" I couldn’t help but laugh at that.
"So you remember what happened?" I looked up hopeful.
"Not exactly. The nurse told me I had traces of a drug in my blood stream and I remember being with a man at the bar, its not hard to work out that’s what happened. He spiked my drink" I was more concerned about how she ended up by the side of the road.
"Have you called Mom?" I shook my head.
"No. I thought she would just make things worse" I answered her honestly.
"Yeah. She cant ever know about this" She said, staring lazily at the floor with a distant look in her eyes. I furrowed my brows.
"She'll have to know sometime, if we don’t tell her mom will find out from someone else"
"Matt. I mean it. She will never let me out of her sight again" She glared at me, telling me she was completely serious. I had no grounds to argue with her on. I huffed, reluctantly nodding my head.
"That's settled then. Our secret" She said, pleased with herself.
"Our secret" More like a skeleton to add to my closet. An big fat ugly one.
