Behind The Walls

three

“Thanks for picking me up, so that we could hang out again.” Zachary Merrick said as he went out of the car.

“Sure, no problem. Dinner was nice.” The older, Alex Gaskarth replied.

“It sure was. What do you want to do now?”

“Anything really, but I’m exhausted if I’m being honest.” He replied, entering the house.

“Uh, we can just watch a movie.”

“Okay, you don’t mind if I fall asleep do you?”

“Nah, it’s your house. Do what you have to do. I’ll just go home when the movie finishes.” They sat on the couch. After a little silence, an idea popped and he asked, “Hey Lex, do you mind if I talk to her again? If you fall asleep, that is.”

“Fuck, why do you like her so much? She’s so goddamn annoying.”

“She’s just scared, Lex. Don’t take your anger on her.”

“Fine, just go. And when you’re done, get the fuck out of there and go home.”

“Okay.” He replied plainly and shrugged.

“I just don’t get why you’re so nice to her.”

Zack didn’t care about his friend’s rudeness. He knew he was also being rude just by bringing up the maid, but in the end, he got to talk (well tell stories) to Constance, and that is all he really wanted and mattered at the moment.

He made his way to the room beside the other room with the metal door. It was actually a nice room with vintage furniture inside. He sat down on the floor and knocked on the wall.

“Hello.” He said as he knocked again. This time, he wasn’t sure she was there, but she knocked back with the same beat. He smiled at her respond, knowing that she was there. “It’s nice to be back. I hope you’re doing fine. I don’t know how Alex’s been treating you for as long as you’re here, but I really hope you’re okay.” Constance, on the other side of the wall smiled sadly at the statement. She wanted to say something, but she couldn’t. She tried and tried to say something, but it seemed like her mind was stopping her and telling her not to, so she stayed quiet. At least for the mean time. She really did want to say something.

“Well, I’m guessing you don’t really go out much since Alex is so uptight. So I wanted to tell you more about my journeys. My trip to Mount Everest would be nice to tell about. I hope you don’t think I’m showing off because of this.” His voice came out shy. She shook her head to show that it was okay, but then she realized he couldn’t see her. And it honestly killed her. She rolled closer to the wall next to her bed, so that she could hear his story better.

He told her everything with detailed information, from the beginning till the end. Somehow, it made her feel warm and secure. She believed that maybe his stories were her ticket out of the place. The nineteen year old really wanted to go outside. She wanted to be with Zack.

His stories were liberating and downright beautiful. The way his voice told so much emotion and joy made Constance happy. It felt as if she was there with him. And she was very grateful that Zack would help her escape her life for a moment.

Constance didn’t hate Alex. In fact, she felt sorry for him. She didn’t hate her life. She knew it could be worst than this. Alex wasn’t pleasant, not at all, but she would never know what he went through that made him like the man he was. She had no right to judge her boss. Something or someone must’ve made him like that. But she was angry with him. Why can’t she just go out for once? Why? She thought.

As Zack finished his story of climbing the frosty mountain, the girl felt emptiness. Now was the time. She always wanted to say something. He deserved more than her name. This was it. Come on Constance, you can do this, she said to herself.

“Well, that was it. My trip was great. Maybe someday, soon I hope, I can take you out of this place.” And with that, she sighed and closed her eyes. Someday, she hoped.

“Thank you Zack.” The older man heard. It was small and sweet like a little girl. He smiled and replied, “You’re welcome. I’ll be back for you. I promise.” And as he walked out, she mumbled, “Don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

When he went out of the room, he found Alex on the couch.

“How was your date with the sweet, little Constance?” He asked Zack with mockery. He didn’t like him talking to her so much. He thought that Zack was weak and was easily won.

“She was nice.”

“How would you know?”

“She talked.” And with that reply, Alex was livid. She wasn’t supposed to speak with strangers. He knew he was strange for thinking unclearly. He didn’t like the fact that she was so quiet even though he was thankful for a non-sassy maid, but dammit Constance, you’re not supposed to talk to guests. It was weird, and he knew that, but nothing was clear to Alex anymore. “See you soon, Lex.” Zack ran through the door and Alex banged the door.

“CONSTANCE!” He shouted. The girl quickly went out, she knew Zack must’ve gone home and she was terrified with what was coming.

“What did you say to him? WHAT? ANSWER ME YOU BITCH!”

“Nothing, I just said thank you.” It was small and scared.

“That’s not nothing. Nothing is when you don’t fucking say anything to him. How could you be so stupid? That sweet voice of yours isn’t going to work with me. Got it? You follow my rules.”

“Yes, Mr. Gaskarth.”

“That’s the last thing you’ll ever say to him.” He got closer to the Constance, his eyes wide like it was gonna pop out. “What happens in this house, to you, to me, and whatever that useless brain of yours know, stay here inside this manor. Don’t make me mad again.”

“Yes, Mr. Gaskarth.”

“Good.” He left, his burning stare still fresh on her mind. She went back to her room and sighed. Alex Gaskarth, what the hell happened to you? She thought.
