Mustn't Fall for the Patient

Four weeks passed since the bus explosion, I was still Jack’s doctor but I was completely thinking about taking myself off of his service. Hospitals have a huge rule where you don’t fall in love with patients, you don’t flirt with them. Nothing relationshipy. But Jack Jesus that guy was such a flirt and I couldn’t help but flirt back. I couldn’t help but think about what his lips would feel like on mine. I laid in bed waiting on my alarm to go off but before it could my pager did. It was a 9-1-1 from Ana to Alex and Jack’s room.
I got out of bed and pulled my clothes on and ran out the door, I drove off to the hospital and pulled my scrub shirt on over my long sleeve before I entered Jack’s room. He was sitting up laughing and Ana was cracking up.
“That was not funny.” I said
“Take a joke.” Ana said
“I was in bed, it’s four thirty. 9-1-1’s mean something is seriously wrong. I thought he was dying.” I said
“So you care that much about me?” Jack smiled
I rolled my eyes and pulled Ana out of the room.
“I almost had a heart attack Ana, my shoes don’t even match.” I said
She looked down.
“That’s my shoe.” She said
I rolled my eyes and walked into the locker room and got ready of the day. I walked back into Jack’s room dressed and ready.
“No make-up today?” Lisa asked from her cot.
“I didn’t have time.” I said
“You look good without it.” Jack said
I smiled and walked over and pulled the curtain shut. I checked his incisions and they looked good. As I was leaning over him he reached up and tucked my septum ring up.
“Thanks.” I said
He just smiled and we leaned in towards each other, before we could meet in the middle I stood up straight and pulled the curtain back open.
“Our orthopedic surgeon will be by later to see if you can get these casts off and check on you ribs.” I said
He nodded and Ana came in, I was completely flustered.
“Alex I’m here to discharge you.” She said
“I can leave?” He asked
“All of you but Jack are leaving today. I’ll come back a little later with the papers.” She said
He nodded and she pulled me outside of the room and out of ear range.
“Why are you so flustered?” She asked
“Jack and I almost kissed.” I said
“Was the curtain open?” She asked
I shook my head.
“I knew he was on your mind. You need to get him off of it before you get fired.” She said
“How?” I asked
“There’s always Xavier.” She said
I sighed.
“Page him 9-1-1 to on-call room five.” She said
“Did we not just learn that 9-1-1’s aren’t funny?” I asked
“You’re in a sexual emergency.” She said
I rolled my eyes and walked away.
I was going to do it anyways, I really did need to get my mind off Jack; he’s my fucking patient! I walked calmly to on-call room five and paged Xavier. It was only almost five am and I was paging someone for sex. I heard a knock on the door and he walked in, his hair was a mess.
“I was asleep.” He said
“Sorry.” I said
“What’s your emer?” He asked getting cut off by me pressing my lips to his.
He pulled me tightly to him and locked the door, he pushed me down onto one of the beds and laid on top of me kissing me roughly on the mouth and neck.
“I hoped you’d page me for this.” He moaned.
Clothes went flying to the floor and he was pushing himself into me, I can’t lie it felt great just not right. I sort of felt dirty for doing this. I chuckled to myself as we flipped and I was on top. I was getting close when a pager went off, I reached up for mine and it was another 9-1-1 to Jacks room, except not from Ana which meant it was trouble.
“I’m sorry it’s a 9-1-1 from chief resident.” I said pulling off of him.
I pulled all of my clothes back on and made sure I didn’t look like I was just having sex with an attending. Once I was good I ran out and down the steps to the surgical wing and into Jack’s room.
“He’s seizing.” The nurse said
“Page neuro.” I said
I pulled the curtain closed so Alex’s pleading eyes weren’t staring at me. I turned Jack on his side and another nurse suctioned out the froth from his mouth. When the seizure was over I intubated him and sighed. Neuro got there and checked his vitals.
“We’ll have to get another CT scan to see what happened.” He said
“I’ll get an intern on that.” I said
“Bring the scans to me.” He said
I nodded and he left, I paged Steven and pulled the curtain open, Alex was standing there starting at me.
“He had a seizure we’re going to get a CT to see why it happened.” I said
He nodded and Lisa gave him a hug.
“You’ve got to fix him Aussie.” He said
“I’ll try.” I said
He nodded and I walked out of the room and down to the CT lab and waited on Steven, when he got there I sat down and watched for the scans.
“What’s that?” Steven asked pointing to a spot of the scan.
“That’s a bleed.” I said
I paged neuro and he came down to the lab.
“We’ve got an OR booked for him, we have to get him in now.” He said
“Let me go inform his friends.” I said
“No time, I need you to scrub in.” He said
I nodded and we hauled Jack to the OR.
“Gently transfer him.” Chris said
“One, two, three.” I said
We gently switched him from the bed to the OR table. The scrub nurses prepared him as Chris and I walked out and scrubbed in. When his four minutes were over I was still going.
“Hurry up, four minutes has passed.” He said
“I know.” I said
We walked in and got gowned and gloved and then got his head lamp. He got the scalpel and cut into Jack’s head. I didn’t think I should be in there but I went in anyways. I got gowned and gloved and walked over to Jack’s side.
“Ashmore I need you to suction.” Chris said
I nodded and scurried over to him and was given the suction.
“All of it not half of it!” He yelled
“I’m trying not to stab him in the brain!” I yelled back
He grabbed my hand roughly and positioned it so I was sucking out all of the blood.
“I’m here!” Ortho said coming in.
She got gowned and gloved and sat next to his body.
“Why?” I asked
“I’m taking his casts off.” She said
“Well be careful.” Chris said
She nodded and started cutting off his casts.
“I’m done, when he wakes up get him moving those.” She said
I nodded and she left and Chris continued to fix the bleeders in his brain.
“Is he going to be okay?” I asked
“He should be.” He said
I sighed and continued to suction.
Three hours passed and we were finally done, I left leaving Chris to clean him up and I took off my gown and gloves and walked up to Jack’s room. Alex and Lisa were sitting on the couch, Alex was in his regular clothes.
“Did they discharge you?” I asked leaning on the door frame.
“About two hours ago. You only took him to get a CT what took you three hours?” Alex asked
“We had to take him into surgery again, he had a brain bleed. He’ll be up soon, then we have to wait for him to wake up.” I said
“Will he wake up?” Lisa asked
“We’ll know when he wakes up.” I said
Alex sighed.
“I’m going to go talk to the other two.” I said
They nodded and I walked next door, Rian was dressed and sitting with his girlfriend next to Zack’s bed.
“Hey there she is all in scrubs.” Rian said
“You’re discharged too?” I asked
“Doctor Dexter had me discharged. Who else?” He asked
“Lex. Him and Lisa are waiting on Jack to get back from the OR.” Is aid
“What happened to Jack?” The girl laying in Zack’s bed with him asked concerned.
“His brain started bleeding and he had a seizer” I said
She looked horrified which made me think that she liked him
“Are you Jack’s doctor?” Cassadee Pope asked
“Yeah, Dr. Ashmore.” I said
“I’m Rian’s girlfriend Cassadee.” She said
“Nice to meet you.” I said
“And I’m Zack’s girlfriend Paige.” The girl in Zack’s bed said
“Nice to meet you too.” I said
I pulled my scrub cap off and all my hair cascaded down.
“Jack should be okay, we just have to wait on him to wake up.” I said
Rian and Zack nodded.
“Is that your natural color?” Paige asked
“Yes?” I questioned
“Natural length or extensions?” She asked
“Natural; I’m not pretentious enough to wear extensions.” I said
Lisa laughed from the door way.
“I wear extensions.” Paige said
“I know. I can tell.” I said
She scoffed and I walked out of the room.
“Wow. Aussie’s got some fight in her.” Alex said
I smiled.
“We’re heading home, visiting hours just ended.” Lisa said
“Take them with you.” I said gesturing towards the other three.
She nodded and I walked into Jack’s room, he was laying there looking so peaceful. I touched his arm and walked back to on-call room five. Xavier was still there.
“Everything okay with your patient?” He asked
“Hopefully, just have to wait till he wakes up.” I said.
“Come here.” He said
I walked over and laid down with him, I needed the comfort.
“I’m not going to tell you I understand what it’s like to lose a patient or have one in a coma because I don’t; I’m just a dermatologist. Do you want to know why I picked derm?” He asked
I nodded and he wrapped his arms around me pulling me to his bare chest.
“Because it was a lot simpler than being a surgeon. We see a lot of gross moles and skin rashes but that’s it. You see the inside of bodies, I personally couldn’t do that.” He said
I chuckled and he kissed my check.
“I have to go.” He said
I nodded and he crawled over me and left, the door reopened and Ana was standing there.
“Jack’s asleep?” She asked
“He just had brain surgery.” I said
She sighed.
“I was having sex when I could have been watching him to catch the seizer when it first started
“Assuie, he’ll wake up. I know he will. Don’t blame yourself, you couldn’t have known that he was going to have one that couldn’t have been predicted that.” I said
“I know.” I said
“Jack will be fine…” She said coming over to lay on the bed behind me
“So how was Xavier?” She asked playing with my hair.
“He was good, but it was weird.” I said
“What do you mean?” She asked
“Have you ever had sex with someone and even though it felt good it just didn’t feel right?” I asked
“Yeah, once.” She said
“That’s what it was like. But you could sleep with him whenever, you’ll enjoy him. Trust me.” I said
“Is he pretty blessed?” she asked
“You can find that out yourself.” I said nodding.
“Is Jack blessed?” She asked
“I don’t know.” I said
She laughed,
“I’m heading home, are you?” She asked
“No, I think I’m going to stay with him.” I said
“Okay.” She said
She got up kissing my cheek and I watched her walk away, I laid there for a while staring at the ceiling. After a while I got up and walked back to Jack’s room, he was just lying there; sort of like a potato. A cute, cute potato. I walked over to him and pulled the curtain closed and sat down on the edge of his bed.
“Look Jack, I seriously need you to wake up. I feel so bad for not being in here.” I said
I took his hand and kissed his palm, I knew tomorrow I would have to take myself off of Jack’s case. I was too close to him. I laid my head down and my hand was still clutching his.
