It's Such A Shame That We Play Strangers

Jack’s P.O.V
I answered my phone and it was Zack on the other end of the line. He was asking if I had seen Alex today, which I haven’t. He never really came back from his shower now that I think about it.

‘No, I haven’t seen him. What’s happened?’ I questioned, standing up from my desk.

‘I don’t know, I just realised that he wasn’t in class, and well, neither are you.’ Zack said through the phone.

‘Oh, well I woke up late and didn’t feel like coming in from yesterday’s incidents. I’m sure one day won’t hurt me.’ I replied.

‘Alright, well, see you after school then.’ Zack said as he hung up the phone. I placed my phone into my pocket and walked out the room.

I walked towards the bathroom, fearing for the worst, I’m going to find his body. But half way down the hall, I see his toothbrush and towel sitting on the floor, someone pushed it aside.
This was extremely weird for a school. A student went missing and no one even knew. There is something going on, and I will get down to the bottom of this. I walked to the bathroom and no one was in there, I walked through every inch of the school for two hours and didn’t find anything.

I walked out the door towards the hole in the fence when my phone beeped. It was a message from Rian. I opened it to see that he also questioned about Alex and his absence. I replied saying that I was looking for him and was about to check our spot near the river, hoping to find him there. But I had a feeling that was very doubtful.

I reached the river, and looked upon the log, finding it empty. I sighed and pulled my phone out, calling Rian on my walk back.

‘Hello?’ Rian said when he answered.

‘He isn’t there, this is very strange. I’ve looked everywhere Ri, he just isn’t here.’ I said as I climbed through the hole in the fence.

‘Meet us at your dorm room, we’ll come over now.’ Rian replied, hanging up the phone. I placed my phone back into my pocket and continued my walk back to the room.

When I arrived, Zack and Rian were there, talking amongst themselves. Zack saw me and tapped Rian on the chest, making him shush and smile sadly up to me.

‘What’s wrong?’ I ask, feeling worried.

‘Alex is in hospital… We went to the office to report that he hadn’t been in class and that you couldn’t find him. They said to us that he was found in a storage unit, beaten badly. We are able to go see him after school finishes but there isn’t much we can do.’ Rian said, I felt my mouth was open and that my heart was beating at an elevated race.

‘How, who? Ugh, I think I have an idea.’ I yelled, walking off towards the math room, I walked in, walked up to Vic’s desk and slammed my hands down hard on the desk.

‘How could you. How fucking dear you touch him again.’ I yelled. Vic looked up at me and defended himself.

‘What the hell are you talking about?’ He yelled back.

‘You know exactly what I’m talking about, you and Alex. You locked him in a storage unit, didn’t you?’ I yelled.

‘Why would I do that? I don’t like the kid, but I don’t want him dead, jeez Jack. I didn’t have anything to do with that.’ Vic replied.

‘You mean to tell me that you didn’t have any clue or idea that Vic was in there?’ I asked.

‘No, I’m not that mad at him.’ Vic replied.

‘I got the call from him. I heard talking in the background, it was a man, talking, Alex was breathing hard, then when the man said where they were, Alex yelled saying that he needed the police and where they were, then it went silent. So I hung up, called the police and it went on from there.’ A voice from the background said.

Everyone in the room looked to the back of the room to see someone I didn’t know the name of.

‘What’s your name?’ I questioned.

‘Josh, I um, was also good friends with Tyler.’ He replied.

‘How did you have Alex’s number?’ Rian replied.

‘Well, we are working on an assignment together. He said to swap numbers so we can talk about it. I didn’t see it as a problem. So when I got the call from him, I thought that it was going to be about like, the assignment. But when I started to hear that it wasn’t, I wasn’t too sure what to do really.’ Josh replied.

‘You saved his life. That’s what you did. What you did, saved his live.’ Zack said.

‘Do you know who did it?’ I asked.

‘Well, I think his name was Tom.. I didn’t really get if there was relations or if Alex was taken for the benefit of a kidnapping. But the question still stands, why were they in the school and how did they get into the school if they weren’t related. That’s the weird thing.’ Josh said.

‘Well when we go to see Alex after school, you should come with us, so he can thank you for saving his life.’ I said. Josh nodded his head and smiled. I walked back out of class towards my room.

I reached the room, opened the door, closed the door and walked over to my bed. I sat down on the edge of it and stared at Alex’s bed.

When people get close to me, they seem to get hurt and maybe, just maybe, I am so sick of it.
