Here We Go Again

1

Alex woke up from yet another restless sleep, he was warm and sticky and sore all over. His boyfriend, James, well for a lack of words liked to be rough and he liked to be rough most nights of the week. He glanced to the flashing alarm clock by the side of his bed and sighed softly before heaving himself up from the lumpy bed and making his way to the bathroom where he proceeded to look over the fresh bruises which littered his body. He ran his fingers along his arms and sighed softly, they hurt, they really hurt and he really didn’t know how he was going to mask the pain in work. He shook the thought from his head before stepping into the shower and washing the sweat from himself, but he didn’t feel clean, he never really felt clean with James around, it wasn’t that his boyfriend was dirty or anything, it was just that he made Alex feel dirty with the way he spoke to him and treated him, but if Alex was being completely honest with himself he deserved it.

A few minutes later Alex was out of the shower and changing into his now-fading black skinny jeans and a white button up, Alex despised his shirt, but this was mostly because it was long sleeved to cover the bruises on his arms. He styled his hair as best he could with the little amount of time he had before rushing into the kitchen to make James’ breakfast, seeing as the older man got very cranky if his breakfast wasn’t waiting for him when he woke up. When Alex was sure that everything was ready for James for when he looked up, Alex grabbed his bag before leaving and running to the bus stop only just in time to get the bus.

Alex hated the mornings; he hated the rushing and the tiredness, but he hated the afternoons even more, and this was for a number of reasons. The first reason is the shabby office he worked in had no heating and his desk was right next to a window which didn’t close properly. The second reason was lunch, he never had any lunch with him because he never had the time to make any, and James wouldn’t let him take money, he insisted that Alex didn’t need it and that it was for his own protection because if Alex were ever to get mugged, he wouldn’t have anything to give them and he would be safe. Alex thought this was complete bullshit because he carried his phone and iPod to work with him. The third and final reason he hated the afternoons was because it somehow reminded him of Jack, he didn’t even know why it reminded him of his ex, it just did. Sometimes he thought it was because he was always thinking while working, and he had very little work to do from 12-2, so he let his mind wander, and he was sure that it was that which lead him to thinking about Jack.

~~

After yet another horrible day at work, Alex was standing on the far too over crowded bus as the usual rain pelted against the windows. He watched as the scenery passed and he honestly longed to be one of the people who were walking happily under umbrellas with their partners, half jogging and half running into a coffee shop and sharing a small kiss as they stepped inside, but instead he was stuck in a borderline abusive relationship with a man who he barely liked let alone loved, but as always Alex had to remind himself that it was his own fault that he didn’t have that. He was the one who wanted a different life, and he was the one who ruined his chances of being happy and maybe even married in a house with a child. Just as this thought popped into his head, Alex got off the bus to make his way back home in the cold rain. If there was one thing Alex liked from his current life was the rain, he liked to think that it washed everything bad away and that when he got home everything would be perfect, but that was never the case and today wasn’t going to be an exception.

Alex soon made it to their house, yes he was lucky enough to live in a house and not one of the smelly and dirty flats that surrounded them, but he wasn’t entirely sure that his living conditions were much better than what they would be if he were living in the flat. He walked through the gab where their gate should be and down the garden path which was all cracked and had weeds and grass growing through it. Please, don’t think that Alex was blasé about the appearance of his front garden, he just didn’t have the time to do anything about it, not with having to do everything inside the house as well. He unlocked the stiff front door and sighed softly when he stepped into the house and hung his Jacket off, once again James was passed out on the couch with a bottle of beer in his hand and leaking all onto the floor. Alex groaned to himself and shook his head before getting a cloth to clear it up, gritting his teeth as he did so because he has done this too many times to keep count. Once everything was cleaned up he looked to his boyfriend and shook his head to start on dinner, and it wasn’t long into him cooking when he felt hands on his hips and lips on his neck. He plastered a fake grin on his face and turned around to face his boyfriend.

“Hey, babe” He spoke sweetly and leaned in to kiss him, but frowned when his lips met a cheek. James never let him kiss him. They only ever kissed properly when James wanted it to lead to sex, nonetheless he kissed his boyfriends cheek and asked how his day went, but was given the snappy answer of:

“You ask the same thing every day, and I tell you the same thing every day. Are you stupid or do you just have a short term memory? My day was fine.” Alex only shrunk back a little bit and turned around to continue cooking. “And I’m not going to even bother asking how bad your say was, because you’re only going to complain as per usual. You are a whiny bitch after all.”

Alex bit his lip and nodded and finished frying off the chicken and put it on the plate before serving it with salad and placing James’ plate on the table in front of his awaiting boyfriend. He had only turned his back for a few seconds when he heard a plate smashing on the floor and the feeling of the broken pieces hitting his leg. He turned around to see what happened and almost jumped back when he saw James standing in front of him, a more than angry expression on his face.

“You’re fucking worthless” The older man spat in Alex’s face, “You can’t even make dinner, how hard is it to make a decent dinner for me?” Alex only looked up to him in confusion, he didn’t know what he had done wrong.

“I-I…What’s wrong with it?” He whimpered.

“What’s wrong with it? You fried the chicken for starters, you obviously want a fat and unhealthy boyfriend if you’re doing that, secondly the chicken is dry so therefore inedible, and lastly you gave me fucking tomatoes.” He took another step closer to Alex. “You’re useless.” He mumbled and sent a fist flying into Alex’s stomach. Alex instantly bent over with pain and cried out, memories of being beaten in high school filling his head. James muttered something about needing to go out before leaving the house and being sure to slam the door on the way out.

As soon as he left, Alex stumbled over to the couch and just cried, that was the first time that James had hit him. He stayed in the same position for half an hour before getting up to clear the mess in the kitchen, and for the first time in a long time he really wished he had Jack with him.
