Don't Forget Me

Crushed Dreams and Some Metal In Between

I remember quite vividly running up to the mangled wreck of her car. Smoke rose from the hood and a small fire quietly engulfed the engine. Firefighters and police blocked off the area with yellow caution tape and it blew in the breeze on an early evening in March. It was exceptionally chilly from what I can recall, but not as chilled as my soul felt when I found out she wasn't even at the scene of the accident. A police officer found her license in her car, thankfully it was there, otherwise, they would have never came to the house and found me. They told me she most likely left her car deliberately, as do some victims of car crashes. She was probably looking for help, but there's no one for miles in this area, just a forest. My heart sunk as I hugged her brother, wondering what could have possibly caused her to crash and then leave her car.

It's been five months since she's been missing. Five months of endless missing person posters, phone calls, restless nights, tears. Five months of not having her by my side, eating breakfast together, going on little dates because we were the couple that did those sort of things. We were engaged, the wedding was in two months at the time of the crash. We were happy, happy for us, happy for life, happy for everything. And just like that, the happiness is gone, just like Delaney.
