A Love Like War (Jalex)

The Anthem

Alex walked briskly through the cemetery, a little terrified. This was were corpses were buried! There could be ghosts! Or zombies! He hated the cemetery and just wanted to get home as soon as possible. Who's idea was it to stay out this late on a school day, anyway? He'd have to smack Rian for the brilliant plan later. As soon as his teeth stop chattering. His jacket was doing absolutely nothing to block out the cold and he pulled it to him tighter anyway. Maybe he could convince himself it was. But that's when he heard sobbing. Too soft to hear if you weren't listening, but too loud to not hear once you did. Oh fuck! Maybe someone was getting eaten by a zombie! Oh no! What does he do?! Alex took a deep breath to calm his raging nerves and he walked softly and carefully to were he heard the sounds. He had to be brave. Alex calmed down enough to notice the boy covered in dirt with a small backpack by his feet. He had a cigarette in his hand and was probably trying to get himself to relax. "Hello?" Alex called and the boy froze like a scared rabbit, his eyes darting around the empty cemetery. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you." Alex said, holding up his hands to show he didn't have any weapons. He dropped his own bag and slowly walked over to the shaking boy. "I heard crying and I wanted to make sure you were okay." The boy nodded. "I'm fine." He replied. Alex got closer as the bit put of the cigarette. No way was this boy fine. His voice was cracked with sadness and his throat was probably dry firm the cigarette smoke and crying. His eyes were bloodshot and the right side of his face was swollen. Bruises and cuts littered his arms and Alex could tell this boy had been in a fight. A painful one, at that. "What happened? Why are you out so late a night?" Alex asked carefully, trying not to scare him. "Why are you?!" He snapped and it looked like it hurt to speak. "I'm on my home from a party. My house is right over there." Alex pointed through the cemetery and the boy nodded. "Why through the cemetery?" He asked, probably noticing how Alex jumped at every noise. "It was the quickest way." Alex said truthfully. "Hey, do you want some water? It sounds like it hurts to speak." "Yeah, it does. Can I please have some?" The boy asked shyly and Alex got up, grabbing his backpack and rummaging through it before throwing it at the boy. "Thanks." The boy said and almost drank the whole water bottle, making Alex chuckle. "No problem. What's your name, anyway?" Alex asked, trying to be polite but obviously failing. "I'm Alex. Alex Gaskarth." "Jack Barakat." "No." Alex replied before breaking out in a fit of giggles. "I mean, you're kidding, right?" Alex asked through his giggles. This guy didn't even look like him.. "I'm not kidding. Why would I joke about something like that?" 'Jack' asked, obviously pissed. "Okay, man, whatever you say. I mean, you don't even look like him." "Being caked in mud does that to a person, you know." Jack said sarcastically. "How would you know what I look like, anyway?" Jack asked and Alex blushed. "I sit behind him in math." Alex said. "Actually, he's in half my classes, too." "Oh." Jack felt bad for not remembering him sooner. "Oh!! You're the one who succeeds in everything he does!" "Huh?" "C'mon, everyone has noticed it. You pass all your classes and basically everyone loves you." "Are you serious?" Alex asked, wondering what the Hell was up with this guy. "No one loves me." "Ugh, man, open your eyes. It's actually gross about how the girls go on and on about you." "Yeah, that is kinda gross. Sorry, but I'm but interested in women." "Too busy with school?" Jack teased, making Alex blush again. "N-no, I, uh, am gay." "Oh." Jack stated dumbly. "That's cool." And awkward silence passed over them. "So, uh, why're you out here anyway?" Alex asked weirdly. Oh god, what if Jack thinks he's a creep? "My fucktard of a father threw me out for being gay." "Oh, so you're gay too?" Alex asked and Jack nodded. "That's kind of stupid, though. Like, so what? At least you're not getting women pregnant all the time." "Uh, I guess. I don't know. He's really close minded." "Yeah, mine too." Alex paused. "I haven't told anyone I'm gay yet, by the way. I mean, uh, my brother knew but...." "Oh, um, yeah. Only you and my dad know." Jack smiled briefly. 'God, his smile was gorgeous' Alex thought, turning red. "Oh, what do you mean by "knew"? Did he, like, forget or something?" "Um, no, he, uh, committed suicide a few years ago." Alex whispered the last part. He hated talking about it. "Oh, um, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have asked. I mean, you didn't have to tell me!" "It's cool." Alex sniffled and looked up, tears threatening to spill. He would not cry. "It's not, you're gonna cry because of me." Jack said softly, holding Alex's head in his hands, rubbing something circles into his cheek until Alex gave in and smiled. Jack smiled back and pulled him into a hug. "Do you wanna come spend the night at my house?" Alex asked out of the blue, pulling away to look into Jack's eyes. "My parents are going to be out of town the next week, so it's cool." "Are you suggesting something, Alex?" Jack asked, raising his eyebrows, grinning. "N-no! J-just, uh, explaining to them would be awkward and they'd probably say no, so." Alex rushed to explain and Jack chuckled. "I was teasing, Alex." Jack laughed. Alex loved his laugh. It was pure and childish. It made Alex feel warm inside. "Oh." Alex replied dumbly, making Jack laugh harder and eventually he gave in and joined him. "But, yeah, I'd love to spend the night with you." Jack answered. "Cool. Okay, I'm fucking freezing, so let's go." Jack laughed and they picked up there things and Alex led the way to his house.
