Dirty Work

"Mr. Barakat? Sir, the cops need to talk to you again so that they can file a claim to your insurance company." Rian said, stepping into Jacks office.

"Tell them to fuck off for all I care." Jack mumbled, getting up from the couch and beginning to pace.

"Jack, don't be like that. They're just trying to help." I soothed.

"If they really wanted to help, they'd catch the son of a bitch who did it." Jack growled, hands curling into fists at his side.

Rian looked nervous as he opened his mouth to speak. "Um, that's another thing. The cops have an idea of who broke in, they found some evidence on one of the cameras that suggests it might have been... um..." His voice trailing off as he glanced at Jack.

"Might've been who, Rian?! Goddammit tell me who!" Jack screamed, making Rian jump and me sink further into the couch I was still sitting on. I wasn't used to this side of Jack, every time I had been around him, he'd been nice and caring, except when we were fucking. He was always so demanding and dominant. Seeing him like this kinda scared me. Ten minutes ago he was in my arms, crying his eyes out and now he's ordering Rian around.

Rian took a deep breath and opened his mouth again to speak. "Jack, it was your ex, Zack."

The man in front of me, the one who had seemed so intimidating before, now looked as though he'd been hit in the face by a ton of bricks. "What? Why?"

Rian shrugged. "The cops don't seem to have a motive other than he was doing it out of revenge."

Jack tensed then turned to face me, expecting the worse, I cowered away from him. Jack walked slowly towards me, features softening with every step as he reached the couch.

"Alex. Don't be scared of me, please. I'm sorry." He reached down, gently cupping my jaw and lifting my head so that our eyes met.

I allowed him to link our hands together and pull me up from the couch, tucking me into his side.

"Come on. Let's get out of here."

"Mr. Barakat!" A newsreporter called, running up to us as we exited the front doors that led into the main building.

Jack sighed, leaning down and pecking me on my lips. "I'll be right back. Gotta answer a few questions and calm down the media."

I nodded and he released me, walking away with the reporter following his footsteps.

"He really likes you, ya know?" Rian said once the reporter was out of ear shot.

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah right."

Rian chuckled. "I'm not lying. I see the way he looks at you and the way he acts around you. And I see the way you look at him and the way you act around him as well. I'm not blind. If I was, I don't think I could do my job very well."

I smiled, turning to look at Jack as he talked to the reporter, a cameraman had shown up and was now recording for whatever newstation, broadcasting live, I guess. I bit my lip as I saw Jack laugh a little, eyes glinting with some humor as he looked at me.

The reporter turned, looking at me too, asking Jack a very simple question. "Who's that?"

I tensed a bit as the camera turned as well, putting me on display basically. Awaiting Jacks answer I glanced down at my feet, not trying to seem to awkward.

Finally, Jacks response echoed through the air and I felt my body freeze. Eyes watering up with tears as words I never thought he'd say left his mouth.

"No one important. He's nothing."
