Happy Fathers Day

Chapter 13

Jack had been nervously pacing in the emergency waiting room, time ticking slowly by as he waited for the couples doctor, Vic, to come out. Jolie had arrived about an hour ago, Hayden and Kena were sitting in one of the chairs together, playing on Jolies and Jacks phone. "How much longer?" Jack asked, stopping in front of Alan and Austin, who were sat in a chair beside Jolie, hands linked and knees bouncing up and down in anticipation and excitement. "Jack, calm down. It's only been about an hour and a half, the doctor is probably still seeing what's happening." Alan reassured. "I know but still... When he had Hay, it didn't take this long to learn anything." "This baby is about what? Three weeks premature? Hayden was on time. They're just making sure everything is okay. I promise you he and the baby will both be fine." Alan said, stroking Jacks arm. Jack sighed, sitting in the chair beside Alan and leaning his head on his shoulder, the younger male turned his head and kissed Jacks hair. "Hayden, baby, can daddy see his phone?" Jack asked his daughter, watching as the little girl poked her head up. "Sure daddy." Hayden said, reaching over and planting the device in her fathers hands. He unlocked the phone and went to his contacts, pressing on his mothers name and holding the phone to his ear. She picked up on the fourth ring.  "Hello?" "Yeah, mom. It's me." Jacks voice seeped nervousness, causing her motherly instincts to kick in. "What's wrong, Jack?" "Um, mom, Alex is in the hospital. He's in labor." Silence. Complete and utter silence. "W-What?"  "He's having the baby, mom." "Are you sure?" "Positive." He heard his mom sigh. "Do you want me to come up there? Have you called Isabelle and Peter yet?" "You can if you wanna. We haven't even heard from the doctor yet to know what they're even doing. And no, I haven't called Isabelle and Peter, I've been busy dealing with shi- stuff at the hospital. I've got Alan and his fiancé here and a friend of theirs with her daughter and Hay." He dragged a hand down his face, letting out a huff.  "Alright, well, I wanna be there to see my grandbaby when it's born so I'll be up in about forty five minutes okay?" "That's fine. Hopefully by then we'll know something and I can tell you." "Alright I'll see you in a bit okay, Jack?"  "Alright mom. I love you." "Love you too. Don't forget to cal-" He hung up the phone before she could finish that sentence. Ever since Peter and Isabelle found out that Alex was gay and dating his best friend back in high school, they hadn't really tried to make an effort to see the couple or their grandchild. They hadn't even came to Jack and Alex's wedding, nor had they came to Hayden's birth. Jack shook his head, contemplating whether to call them or not. "What's wrong Jack?" Alan asked. "My mom wants me to call Alex's parents and let them know what's going on." "What's wrong with that?" Austin asked. "Alex's parents weren't exactly supportive of me and him back in high school when he came out and announced that we were dating." "Oh. Why's that?" "They're pretty homophobic. I remember one day when I came over they wouldn't talk to me or acknowledge me or Alex's existence. Even when we were having dinner, they wouldn't talk to us." "Did they even come to y'alls wedding?" Austin asked, leaning forward in his seat. "No, they didn't even come to Hayden's birth." Jolie and Austin gasped while Alan just grabbed Jacks hand, squeezing it. "Why don't you just call and see if they wanna come up?" Alan suggested. "I don't know. I'd like to find out what's going on with Alex first." "Maybe I can help with solving that."  All of the adults' heads snapped in the direction of the sound of the voice. Dr. Fuentes stood by the entryway to the E.R waiting room, dressed in scrubs. Jack stood up, grasping the doctors hand and shaking it.  "Jack, great to see you again." Dr. Fuentes said and Jack nodded. "What's going on with Alex?" Jack asked, sticking his hands into his pockets. Vic (let's just call him that ffs) sighed. "He is in labor. He's three weeks ahead of schedule so right now we are preparing an emergency c-section because the baby is really ready to come out." "Am I allowed to see him before he goes in? With Hayden they allowed me in the room when he gave birth, can we do that again?" Vic nodded. "Of course. We'll of course have to put you in scrubs but I'll come and get you when he's ready to go in and all of you can walk back." "How much longer till we can see him?" Alan piped up. "About ten minutes, long enough to get him prepared. I'll either have a nurse to get you or I'll walk back out." "Okay. Thank you Vic."  Vic nodded, walking back out of the room. "Vic?" Alan raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, he's actually married to Kellin Quinn." "Bostwick?" Jack nodded. "Kellin Quinn-Bostwick-Fuentes." Alan's eyebrows rose up higher. "Whoa." "Yeah." "Do you know when they got married?" "Vic told me that they settled in together about two years ago." "Huh. Never would've thought Kellin was the marrying type." "I thought the same about you, Alan." Jack teased, watching the younger roll his eyes. "I'm engaged. Not married." "Yet." Austin chimed in, smirk on his face. Alan rolled his eyes again, making Jack chuckle. "Yeah. Yet." Jack chuckled then sighed, staring down at his phone and deciding 'fuck it'. The worse they can say is no.  Jack quickly unlocked his phone and went through the same process as earlier and went to his contacts, this time clicking on Isabelle's name. He pressed the phone to his ear again, hearing it ring... And ring... And ring... "Hello, this is the Gaskarths. Me and Peter are probably not home so we'd appreciate it if you left your name, number and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!" Jack involuntarily gagged at how happy Isabelle's voice sounded through the answering machine. He waited for the beep before leaving his message. "Hey, Isabelle, Peter, it's Jack. I just wanted to call and tell you guys that, um, Alex is in labor and that, he's... He's having the baby, so we're at the hospital if you wanna.. Wanna come up and see him. Yeah, so, that's it for now. Bye." ~~~ Alex was doped up on pain medication and anesthetic, making him giggle and laugh like a three year old. "Jaaaaaaaaack." Alex whined as his husband entered the room, followed by Alan and the gang. "Hey baby." Jack whispered, leaning down to kiss his husbands forehead. "They're gonna cut me open Jay. Cut me open and take out my baby." Alex said, eyes wide. Jack couldn't help but smile at his husbands unusual behavior. "Daddy." Hayden said, leaning up onto the bed and grasping Alex's finger, making both men smile. "Hey Hay."  "Daddy what are you doing in this bed? Are you an' de baby gonna be okay?" Hayden still had a slight problem pronouncing d's and t's. "Yes Hayden. Me and the baby will be perfectly fine. I love you princess." "Love you too, daddy. And I love you too, baby." Hayden say, placing her small hand on Alex's stomach. Jack leaned down, picking his daughter up and leaning her over Alex so that he could kiss her cheek, her doing the same to him. "Here, go to uncle Alan." Jack whispered and handed his daughter over to the younger male, who gladly took her in his arms. Jack leaned over the man next, kissing his forehead and murmuring the words, "I love you, Alex. So much. I'll see you soon, okay?" "Okay, Jay. I love you too." Alex said back as a nurse entered the room. "Mr. Barakat? The doctor is ready." The nurse said and the small group moved away from the bed, allowing the young woman to get everything ready. A few seconds later another nurse entered the room and helped the other one roll Alex's bed out of his room and with a final goodbye and separate 'I love you's, the elder male was being rolled away from his husband, daughter and friends. One of the nurses came back with a bundle of blue scrubs, like the ones you see in television, and handed them to Jack. "Change into these and I'll escort you into the delivery room." Jack nodded, taking the clothes and quickly removing his shoes, pulling the blue hospital material up his legs and pulling on the unruly ugly shirt thing that came with it. He finished adding on the extra things, like the little hair cap, shoe covers and face mask, hating the way he looked as he exited the room, following the young nurse to where Alex had been wheeled to. He entered the room and froze, feeling the realization of what was about to happen hit him like a ton of bricks. His husband was already hooked back up to an IV, Vic hovering over his stomach and wiping at it with some antiseptic wipes, making sure the area was clean. A blue sheet had already been set up, preventing Alex's view of his stomach and lower abdomen. Jack walked over to his husband, linking their hands together and grinning when the elders eyes flickered up to meet his. "Jack, I can't feel anything. What're they doin?" Alex whispered. Jack smiled, brushing the back of his knuckles across Alex's cheek. "They're cleaning you baby, prepping you for the C-section." Alex smiled and nodded. "I can feel something cold, but that's it. Is that normal?" "Yes baby, just like when you had Hay. Do you remember that? I sure do." The couple had basically been in the same position as they were now; only, then they'd been a lot younger and a lot less inexperienced.  It had been a long and painful experience, since it was Alex's first child and his body hadn't properly accepted the anesthetic yet. But, this time was different than last time. This time they were older and knew what they were doing. Jack squeezed his husbands hand reassuringly and leaned down to kiss the mans lips. "Mr. Barakat, we're going to start now. You may feel a bit of pressure and maybe some pain; your husband will be able to talk you through it, okay?" Vic said, grabbing the scalpel and pressing the end of it against Alex's swollen stomach. The elder man let out a gasp at first, feeling light pressure on his lower abdomen, followed by a bit of pain as the first incision was made. "Hey, baby. Look at me, keep your eyes trained on me baby. Think about something that makes you happy." Jack whispered, pressing his lips to the back of his husbands hand after squeezing it. "Think about the day we met. Or the day I asked you to be mine. Or the first time I made love to you, how loud you were." Jack mumbled, seeing his husband blush, aware that there were doctors and nurses all around him, probably hearing every word he said to the elder man but he didn't care; not as long as Alex was calm. "Think about how after we came, how we just laid in bed and kissed and talked about everything and anything that came to us. "Think about the night I proposed to you. Do you remember? It was on our three year anniversary and I had taken us out to that little Italian restaurant and proposed to you on that patio they have out front. Remember? There was a banner hanging above the archway and so many people were there, cheering and applauding when you said yes. God, that day was probably one of my favorite days. "Think about our wedding night," Jack brushed Alex's hair back away from his ear, leaning down and whispering the words, barely audible to anyone but themselves. "Think of how you looked dressed in your suit and me in mine. How handsome you looked, I told you that so many times didn't I baby? But it was true. You looked stunning. I couldn't believe you were mine. I still can't. God, you make me so happy. Thank you for being my husband. Thank you for loving me." Jack kissed Alex on the lips, the elder kissing back before he groaned as he felt pressure and pain once again shoot through his body.  Alex whimpered, eyes begging Jack to make the pain stop.  "I know baby, I know. I'm so sorry. I love you. Relax though, tell me what you're thinking of. I wanna know."  "I-I'm thinking of our first date, h-how we went to that ice cream place by your house and y-you had ice cream all over your face, making me laugh and you to pout. I'm thinking of how magical that moment was, how every moment with you has been magical. You and Hay make me so happy. I'm the luckiest man in the world to have an amazing h-husband and daughter in my life. I wouldn't trade y'all and now this baby, for my life. You guys are the r-reason I live. I love you." "I love you too. Think of something else now, can you do that? How about when we found out we were gonna have Hayden? Do you remember what I said to you?" Alex nodded, letting out a small whimper and gasp before answering. "Yeah, y-you told me that... That we'd get through this. No matter what. And t-that you loved me. And a-after that, we made l-love again. I was so h-happy to have you. I still am. I don't k-know where I'd be without you and Hayden." Jack smiled, seeing tears trailing down Alex's cheeks. He raised a hand, soothingly wiping them away. "You're y world, Alex. You and Hayden both are. And now, we're going to have another member of our family. Someone else for us to love and to cherish and hold. I promised you on our wedding day that I'd be by your side through everything. Through sickness and in health. Till death do us part." Jack ended his little speech with another kiss to Alex's lips. "Five more minutes. Jack, five more minutes." Vic said, making another incision directly under his first, placing his scalpel onto the table beside the bed and beginning to use his hands to expose the underlying sac. Once again, Alex groaned in pain, biting his lips and squeezing Jacks hand. "It's okay baby. Did you hear what he said? Only a few more minutes baby and then our child will be here. Just hold on, okay?" Alex nodded, feeling more pressure on his stomach and abdomen. "I love you." Jack whispered. "I love you, fuck! I love you too baby." Alex whimpered, the anesthetics helping to mask the pain but not enough; he still felt like something was trying to rip it's way through him and considering the circumstance, it fit. "Just one more minute." Vic said. And it all seemed to be a domino effect; there was pressure, pain and then the room erupted with one noise. One noise that brought tears to both fathers eyes and smiles to their lips. A single cry from a baby.
