Between You and I

Put Your Swords Away, I'm Already Down

Kate was the first to react. She walked up to him, slowly and deliberately. She looked up at him with her big blue eyes. Then she slapped him.

"Katherine Olivia!" I scolded as Alex cradled his cheek in his hand.

"He left us, Mom! Don't you get it? He left us and we have no memories of him! I’ve never even met him until now! Well at least now I know who my sperm donor is." Kate cried, ran upstairs, and slammed the door to her bedroom.

"You know, my friends are big fans of you. Maybe I should bring them here so they can molest you." Josie snapped and followed her sister.

Josie’s Perspective

"Katie?" I called, knocking on the door.

"What?" she asked.

"Can I come in?" I asked. She opened the door in response. I crossed the room and hugged her.

"Why is he doing this to us?" she asked.

"I don't know, Kate." I whispered. A knock sounded on the door.

"Come in." I said and Mom walked in.

"Why is he here?" I asked.

"It wasn't my idea. He just showed up before you two got home and he wouldn't take no for an answer." Mom replied.

"How long will he be here?" I asked.

"However long he wants to be." Mom answered.

"But that's not fair to us! He's just going to leave when we get used to having him around!" Kate cried. She was more emotional out of us two. And that was okay, since she was younger. And I was always there to protect her. Until now.

"If he does, I'll kill him." Our mom promised. I smiled.

"Are you coming back down?" Mom asked.

"I am." I replied.

"I guess so." Kate whispered.

"Okay." Mom said and left.

Kate and I linked arms and walked downstairs together, shooting Alex death glares. We had pasta and bread for dinner.

"So how's school?" Alex asked us.

"Like you would care." I spat.

"Josie," Mom warned.

"No she's right. I tracked you three down and worked up the balls to come here and apologize and now I'm trying to get to know you. Yup, I must really not care." Alex retorted. The table fell silent. Kate and I excused ourselves when we finished to go watch a movie.

Alex’s Perspective

I helped August clean up the table after we finished.

"Those girls are quite something." I commented.

"Yeah, they sure are. And listen, I'm really sorry about how they're acting. You're right, it did take a lot to come up here and I appreciate that." she told me.

"But they don't." I pointed out, coming closer to her.

"But I do. Isn't that enough?" she asked, grabbing my hands.

"For now." I breathed and kissed her. Out of the many times I imagined doing this, none of it did this justice. She pulled me so that she was between me and the kitchen counter.

"We should stop." I panted. I didn't want to get caught by either of the girls and make them hate me more. Of course, my fears came true.

"What the fuck?" Josie asked. I turned and saw she was glaring at us. At me. I looked down and realized I'd gotten hard and sat down at the island and crossed my legs. Josie looked disgusted.

"What did you need?" August asked softly.

"I need you to get him out of here." Josie seethed, jerking her thumb in my direction.

"If you knew either of us, you'd know that's not happening any time soon." August replied.

"That's the whole point! I don't know him. You can't just bring in some random guy who claims to be my father and expect me to be okay with it!" Josie cried.

"That's enough!" August snapped.

"Mom, what happened? You never used to yell at me!" Josie cried.

"Because I never had a problem with you." August replied.

"I'm not the problem, but if you're not gonna listen to me, I'm not gonna bother anymore!" Josie cried and stormed upstairs. August looked at me and I hugged her, knowing she needed it.

"Am I right? I mean, I'm lucky that they're good kids and they haven't turned into potheads by now. I mean I have nothing to go on since my parents were never around." she mumbled into my shoulder.

"You're doing fine." I whispered soothingly, rubbing her back. She looked up at me.

"But they hate me." she whispered.

"It's not your fault. I can leave if that helps. Give them a chance to cool down." I told her.

"No. We can get through this." August replied.

Kate’s Perspective

Josie came back into my room, a disgusted grimace on her face.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"I just saw Mom and Alex making out and when they broke off, Alex had a boner." she told me.

"That's gruesome. Glad I didn’t see that." I commented.

"Exactly. I may just be scarred for life." she replied.

"So what did you do?" I asked.

"I told them off, Mom yelled at me, I yelled back, and then I came back up here." she replied.

"Wow." I whispered.

"Yeah, I know. Let's just finish the movie." she told me.

So I read the other installments, and what you have of this one, and I'm sad to see it was never finished. :( I liked what you have of it; Alex is a bit of a douche in this story, but you can tell he tries to honestly make up for it each time. There's kind of a lot of back and forth going on too throughout the series, but I stuck it out. lol.
If you ever choose to continue this, I will be here to read. But if you've lost inspiration, I can understand. You've come so far, though, so I'd hate to see it go unfinished.
But yeah, just wanted to leave a comment letting you know that I'm here reading. :) You're a great writer.
