We're All Just a Walking Travesty

It's Just a Daydream Away

*Flashback to 6 years old*

"Mikey, will you play with me?" I whined.
He turned from his spot at the window to face me, pulling his lips back to form a perfect smile. Behind a dainty pair of glasses, his light brown eyes lit up the face that I've come to known to love since we met a few years ago at the hospital. My mama and his mama were friends in highschool, so they thought it would be a good idea for us to be friends. Mikey's black hair hung low over his eyes and down the back of his neck just as it did that day we met. Typical Mikey Way.
"Of course, Ariel. What are we gonna play?" He asked in response, raising an eyebrow.
I paused for a brief moment to think about his question. There were so many games Mikey and I could play! We could play with Barbies, or even play Store, or maybe a board game! Mikey and I both like Chutes and Ladders. I'm sure he won't mind if we play that one again. I was getting ready to spill out my answer of Chutes and Ladders, when the window drew my eyes to attention. It was somewhat dark outside, and we hadn't gone out at all that day. Hey, I have an idea!
"Hide-and-go-seek tag...outside!" I cheered. Pulling myself up from the old and creaky wooden floor, I danced over to Mikey and grabbed his hand, pulling him up. "Let's go, before it's too dark out!"
Mikey seemed a little hesitant at first, but all of his doubt was instantly masked with a nod and another one of his perfect smiles. I myself smiled a huge grin and poked him in the arm before shouting "Tag! You're it!" really loudly and running out the door of my confined, pink room. The hallway, long and empty, had an eerie feel to it as I started running to the other side. Of course, this hallway has always had the eerie feel to it, so my little 6-year-old mind waved off the unknown presence. I listened to the sound of my feet hitting the floor, followed by an uneven set of footsteps chasing mine in suit.
"I'm gonna get you, Ariel!" Mikey called out. I giggled and shuffled my small, pink footed socks around the corner and down a flight of stairs. The sound of a television filled my ears and I slowed down my pace, careful not to wake my mama. Mikey ran down the stairs and tapped me on the shoulder. "You're it!" he cried.
I quickly hushed him and pointed at the floral couch and loveseat parked next to a wooden table containing a dimly glowing lamp. The couch was occupied by Mama who was all tangled up in a blanket. "Be very quiet, Mikey."
The both of us tiptoed stealthily through the living room and into the kitchen where we put on our shoes and jackets. I opened the bright red door and stepped out into the night. It was a perfect temperature for an August evening. The wind was gently blowing, pulling a few free strands from my face. Up in the sky, the moon shone brilliantly, covering the world beneath it like a light blanket. Long shadows loomed across the bare ground and swayed back and forth, over and over again. There wasn't a single soul, besides Mikey and I, in sight.
Closing the door, Mikey jumped down the single stair. "Alright, I'll count first, Ariel. You go and hide and I'll cover my eyes and count to 30. Deal?" I nodded slightly and watched him turn around. I didn't hesitate any longer. Turning on my heel, I darted out into the spacious front yard of my house. A couple trees speckled the property here and there, their large trunks providing enough coverage for my small body. I chose the one right in the middle, and started to jog towards it. A thought crossed my mind about halfway to the old oak. He'll know right away where I'm at if I hide behind a tree, I thought, it's too obvious. Glancing around some more, I saw the small bridge placed over a dent in the yard. It was the perfect spot to hide! The sides of the bridge were up from the ground just enough to squeeze between the space. Smiling to myself, I rushed over to the bridge and shoved my body underneath it. I heard a small rip as my white-and-pink dress tore and the bottom. I pushed up against the edge as close as I could, letting it conceal my body. There was no way Mikey could find me.
A faint "Ready or not, here I come!" sounded in the background. I giggled, but quickly ceased to make any sound. I wasn't going to be found easily this time. I felt around the bottom of my dress for the small rip. My finger tips slipped through the accident and I made a whimpering sound, upset that I was foolish enough to wear this to play, especially outside. I'll just see if Mama can fix it in the morning after Mikey goes home.
A few minutes passed by and he still hasn't come close to tagging me. I smirked and closed my eyes, letting my imagination take me elsewhere for a brief moment. Footsteps pulled me back from the haze and I pulled my knees closer to my chest. The steps were growing louder and I bit down on my lip to keep from laughing again. He was so close I could practically hear him breathing!
He stopped walking. I frowned, startled that he stopped right by my hiding spot. Was it possible that Mikey somehow heard me?
Deciding that the act was up for me, I crawled down and out under the bridge again. "SURPRISE, MIKEY!!"
I would have started screaming if I wasn't so surprised at the fact that this character wasn't Mikey. He is much worse than you can possibly imagine.
