I'm Not A Savior

II

A week has gone by and she is still closed off from the rest of the class. I can tell that she still has no idea how things work here in the school. I feel bad for her. She is alone in the sea of students. She is excelling in my class as I’ve noticed. Which is a good sign at least.

I was slouched over my desk, grading some quizzes from earlier in the week during my free period, when I felt the breeze again. I looked up and about jumped out of my skin. It was Carmina in the flesh.

“I thought you were turned by a pureblood,” I asked her, “Because the last time I checked, you can’t be out in the sunlight.”

“I lied to you, you twit,” she barked, “I had to come up with something to make you think of me as inadequate to hunt for myself. Now I see you have set up roots. Very risk, for someone I sired.”

“I don’t answer to you anymore,” I stood up from my chair and bared my fangs at her.

“You can try to ignore the sire bond, linking you to me, all you want,” she teased, “But you will always follow my commands. My first is to bow to your creator.”

“No,” I growled at her as I fought her control over me, “I’m not your toy anymore.”

“Alright fine I’ll let you off this time,” she toyed, “If I find out you sire another vampire, I will have no choice but to reel you back in. And if you fall in love with a mortal that is too pretty, I will make you suffer by watching her suffer a torturous end by my hand, Alexander.”

And like when she came, Carmina was gone just as quickly. As I slumped into my chair, I heard a knock at my door. I looked up quickly and I saw red hair in the window. Kenzie. Maybe Carmina decided to leave to avoid running into her. Or she wanted to watch me talk with her from a distance to see if I was falling for her, planning on trying to end my damnation with her as my reason.

“Hello Kenzie,” I greeted her, hiding my anxiety from having a run in with Carmina, “What brings you to my room during my free period?”

“I was having trouble with some of the homework and I was hoping to get some help,” she replied sheepishly, “That is if you’re not busy, Mr. Gaskarth.”

“I’m not all that busy,” I reassured her, “I just finished grading some quizzes.”

Kenzie brought a desk over to mine and got out her homework. I helped her figure out some of the questions that were giving her a hard time, being careful not give her the answers right away. I was struggling with being so close to her. She smelled so sweet and tantalizing to me. Her heartbeat was pounding in my ears, driving insane with bloodlust. I had to bite on my lower lip to keep myself in control.
--- I got home to my cheap apartment completely exhausted. After the run in with Carmina and trying not to drain one of my students, I needed a rest. I also needed to get Tess back into town. I was no match against Carmina alone and I needed help protecting Kenzie. I also needed to tell her about Kenzie and get advice from Tess about girls.

I grabbed my burner phone and dialed up her number, hoping she hadn’t gotten a new one to keep her tracks covered up so Carmina can’t find her. I, however, was lucky and she picked up.

“Tess,” I greeted her, “I need you back in Baltimore. There’s been a change in plans.”

“What happened Alex,” she asked, concerned, “You sound fluster and scared out of your mind.”

“I can explain it to you when you come back into town,” I told her, “It’ll be easier that way.”

“Well you’re in luck,” she replied, “Matt and I haven’t left yet. We were going to leave tonight, but we’ll stay and swing by your place.”

I waited what felt like a lifetime for Matt and Tess to get here. Tess finally arrived and left herself in. I was sitting on the floor between my coffee table and couch with a glass of whiskey in my hand and the bottle on the table. Drinking helped with my thirst, keeping me mellowed out to not act on my instincts to go to my neighbors and tear their throats out. I was planning on hunting tonight in the woods outside town with Tess and Matt; there was no way I’d go out to hunt alone with Carmina in town.

“Alright Alex what happened,” Tess sat down on my loveseat and Matt leaned against the wall next to it.

“Carmina got into my classroom,” I told her, “Carmina lied to her sired vamps that she was turned by a pureblood. All so she could make us hunt for her.”

“But that isn’t the only thing is it,” she asked, hinting for me to continue.

“I have a situation,” I told her, “It involves one of my students.”

“I don’t like where this is going,” Matt commented.

“I’m drawn to one,” I told them, “Her name is Mackenzie Tyler. She’s human and I have almost no control around her. I had to bite my lip to keep myself from hurting her.”

“Alex,” Tess looked me dead in the eyes, “You found your match. It has to be Mackenzie. You have to be careful around her. You’re still her teacher and it’s wrong for you to try anything.”

“I know that,” I told her, sighing heavily, “What should I do?”

“You keep teaching and use it to get to know her and earn her trust,” she advised, “Then when she returns your feelings for her, you have to quit your job. After that you have to tell all about what you are and keep her safe from Carmina.”

“I need you two to stay in town until Carmina decides to go back to Europe,” I told them, “I can’t protect this town alone. Carmina’s hold over me is still strong enough to strain my will.”

“We won’t leave you alone with her, Alex,” Tess came and sat next to me and wrapped her arms around me, “You are my big vampire brother and that bitch will not have you.”
