If We Climb This High, I Swear We'll Never Die.

Chapter twelve

A few days later, Alex stood in front of the mirror, fiddling with his jacket.

"I look stupid." He mumbled, sighing a little. I looked up from spraying my hair, a few strands falling into my face. I groaned in frustation. Then, I walked over to him, looking at him in the mirror.

"You look perfect, Lex." I reassured him, planting a soft kiss on his cheek.

"I... I do?" He seemed in disbelief.

"Of course you do. You always do." I smiled. "I'm the one whose hair keeps fucking up." I mumbled, walking back to grab the hairspray.

After my hair was finally in place, we made our way down the the large dining hall turned dance hall. They'd tidied it up pretty well - music blared from the speakers and there were a few tables and chairs placed in a corner. In the center of the room, couples danced and spun with each other, the bodies a blur.

The only people I could instantly recognise were Josie and Dan, as Josie was wearing a particularly striking yellow dress. She glowed like a reflective jacket. Plus, she was basically grinding against Dan. Not that he was complaining, after all.

I decided that trying to catch her attention was futile, so I dragged Alex onto the dancefloor.

"I don't dance." Alex said through gritted teeth.

"You do now." I replied, smirking cheekily. I grabbed one of his hands and spun myself under his arm, leaning into his chest. He chuckled softly.

"Okay, but only from you." He started to sway a little as he took my other hand in his.

"I wouldn't expect you to dance with anyone else." I pulled him close to me, checking to make sure no one was watching. We weren't ready to talk about our relationship yet. No one even knew we were gay.

"Oh my god, Jack!" A happy voice called from my left side. I instantly let Alex's hands slip away, acting as casual as possible. I turned just in time to see Josie grinning at me. Her teeth were glowing almost as much as her dress.

"Josie! What a... Delight." I smiled fakely.

"I know right! Didn't think you'd show up!" She pushed her hair from her face. It was like a shadow against her luminous outfit. "Anyway, now you're here... How about a dance?"

"Aren't you here with Dan?" I raised an eyebrow. I thought she was over me. Obviously I was wrong.

"Yeah, but I want to dance with you. You don't even have a date." She grabbed hold of my hands and dragged me closer, our bodies pressing together. Was she trying to seduce me or something?

"Get off him!" I turned my head quickly. There was Alex, yelling at the top of his lungs, staring directly at Josie. The room went silent, apart from the now distant thud of music. Or was that just my heartbeat?

"Excuse you?" Josie asked whilst raising a single drawn-on eyebrow.

"I said get off him." Alex repeated breathily. Oh god. We were going to have to tell everyone. I could already tell.

"Why should I?" She questioned, but she let go of my hands anyway. I backed away and stood next to Alex.

"Because he's mine." He said, sounding a little angry. Everyone gasped. They were obviously still listening in. Josie looked between us.

"...Jack?" I think she meant her voice to sound demanding, but instead it came out as a croaky squeak. All I could think to do was nod.
