Thinking of You

Addiction and Her Name

Arianne’s Perspective

I woke up at eight due to jet lag, since it would normally be eleven in Maryland, stretched, and went downstairs to the kitchen. I straightened my camisole and booty shorts and chucked my red hair up in a messy bun.

I saw Stephen sitting at the island, reading the paper while he ate some Fruit Loops. I grabbed the box of Rice Krispies and got myself a bowl and sat down next to him.

“Morning, Steve-O!” I smiled cheerily.

“Morning. You’re up early,” he commented.

“So are you,” I pointed out.

“Insomnia, remember?”

“Oh yeah.”

His insomnia got worse when the band wasn’t touring or recording, which was why he didn’t look forward to down time as much as the rest of the band. He loved coming home to see his family, but the insomnia frustrated him and wore him out quickly.

“What do you wanna do today?” He asked.

I shrugged.

“I should tell you. Zack’s in town.”

“What?”“Yeah, he flew in yesterday, right after you did.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”“Ari, you were out cold. I’m so sorry, I just didn’t want to wake you up.”

Stephen was genuinely apologetic, and it wasn’t like he could read my mind.

“Well, thanks for, y’know, not letting him just come over.”

“No problem. I figured you wanted to rest up so you could process the situation fully.”

“You’re right. Thanks.” I smiled small.

“You’re welcome. Wanna go swimming?” He asked.

“Hell yeah!”

I jogged upstairs to change into my bathing suit while Stephen laughed at my eagerness.

We spent a nice afternoon splashing in the pool, and Josh, John, Brian, and Jess came over and we sat poolside, drinking and laughing. It was honestly just nice to forget everything with Zack and hang out with my high school friends.

The next morning, I came downstairs and Zack was sitting across from Stephen at the kitchen table.

“No,” I whispered and ran back upstairs, into my room, and threw myself down on the bed.

“Arianne, wait!” I heard Zack say.

“I’ll go,” I heard Stephen whisper and heard him padding up the stairs after me.

“Go away,” I said into the comforter, in which my face was buried. I felt part of the mattress sink slightly as Stephen sat down at the end of my bed.

“Arianne, you have to talk to him sometime.”

“No I don’t,” I protested, turning to face him.

He chuckled.

“Yes, you do. He clearly loves you. He flew all the way out here just to set things right with you. What guy does that for the hell of it?”

I sighed.

“I guess you’re right. Send him in.”
