Lost In Stereo

First days

Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep...

Beep, beep, beep, be-
SMACK.

I turned over, smacking my hand against the obnoxious alarm clock. It was the last thing I wanted to hear on this day of all days.

Today was the day I started my new school. See, my father and I had just moved from Florida up to Baltimore. He got a new job and.. well, I had mixed feelings about leaving. I didn't have many friends back in Florida, but I was settled. I only had a few bullies and for the most part, I knew everyone.

I grew up in our old town, knew some of the kids in my grade for most of my life. Now, my personality is hard to define. Generally I'm pretty peaceful, happy, and silly. I get bullied for the way I dress, and the music I listen to.

I'm really into Blink-182, New Found Glory, and Greenday. I'm also a bit.. scene looking, I guess. Whatever. I just hope I can find some friends with a similar taste in music. Dragging myself out of bed, I hopped into the shower. After going through my regular morning routine, throwing on a pair of skinnies, a Greenday t-shirt, and a beanie, I was headed out the door.

My dad and I weren't all that close, so I didn't bother saying goodbye. After my mom.. died, I'd been going to therapy and me and my father drifted. He wasn't physically abusive, but he was verbally from time-to-time. So, I avoided him. I just couldn't wait until I was able to move out.

This year was my last year in school, thank goodness. I could finally leave and start my life! Before I knew it, I was at the doors of Dulaney High. It was a lot bigger then my old school, and there were tons of kids flooding in the doors.

Unfortunately for me, school has been in for about two weeks so.. my being new here would be even more obvious. I made my way to the front office, clearing my throat so the lady at the desk would hear me. "Uh.. excuse me?" I questioned, my voice automatically getting a bit sweeter. As it always did when I talked to adults. It wasn't that I talked angrily to others, in fact, I was pretty friendly. When I talked to adults, though.. my voice changes slightly.. more poised, I suppose. "Er.. I'm new here. I was told to come collect my papers."

With a warm smile, the portly lady handed me my papers, explaining what each one was for, and then sending me on my way. She told me not to be worried about being late in case I got lost, she gave me a slip of paper which signified that I was, in fact, new here.

Score.

Lucky for me, my first class was English. I was pretty good at English, I guess. It was one of my better courses all throughout school. Hesitantly, I opened the door, wincing at the creaking it caused. All heads turned towards me. Now, I was generally very outgoing, but when an entire room of strangers is just staring at you.. makes you uncomfortable.

"Ah, hello!" The teacher chipped, who's name I came to know as Mrs. Barnes. She seemed nice enough, which was rare for high school teachers. Most teachers don't do it for the education of children. The pay is alright and the work hours are fantastic. Every now and then, though, you get a few good ones, and I was thankful that one of my favorite courses wouldn't be ruined by some no good teacher.

"Hi," I smiled, waving my hand in a tiny wave.

"You must be new hear," she squealed, clearly quite excited. "Well, we are very excited to have you. Ehm.." She trailed off, scanning the room. I was thankful that most of the students had engaged in mindless chatter while the lesson was disrupted, so I was in the clear.

"You can sit by that boy, there." She pointed to a skunk-haired boy in the back corner. He was currently in conversation with another boy in front of him who had caramel colored hair. I was delighted to find that each one had band t-shirts on. Bands that I enjoyed. Maybe I cold make friends easier then I expected.

"Jack Barakat, Alex Gaskarth" Mrs. Barnes called, waiting for the boys' attention before she continued speaking. "I want the two of you to show this little lady around school for the next few days. I've taken the liberty of checking her schedule, and she seems to have classes with at least one of you throughout the day." The boys nodded awkwardly, casting an awkward yet warm smile my way.

With that, I headed towards the back of the class, silently taking my seat beside the skunk-haired boy and diagonal from the caramel-haired one. "Hey," grinned the skunk-haired boy. "I'm Jack Barakat, and this is my best friend, Alex Gaskarth." Oh yeah, that's what Mrs. Barnes said earlier.

"Hey," I smiled, feeling much more comfortable now. "Samantha Hart," I offered my name, organizing my books and papers before continuing, "you can call me Sam, though. I hate Samantha." The boys nodded, exchanging a few looks which I was unable to decipher. Best friend code, I guess. "So you like Greenday?" Alex asked, scooting his desk closer to Jack and I's.

"Yeah, they're pretty rad." I grinned, glancing down at my shirt. "What bands do you guys like?"

"Blink-182, Greenday, New Found Glory, Nirvana.." the boys took turns naming off each band, grinning all the while.

"Awesome!" I nearly squealed, biting my lip out of habit. "I love all those bands."

The two of them stared mouth agape, which quickly formed into a grin. After a moment, Jack finally chimed in, a goofy grin spread across his face. "Cute AND has a rad taste in music. You, sweetheart, are one of a kind." Jack giggled, throwing an arm around my shoulder.

Man, he sure was outgoing, wasn't he? I was outgoing and all, but I liked to get to know someone before I really opened up to them. I just laughed, and Jack eventually removed his arm, sitting back in his chair properly.

"Yeah, it's rare you find a girl with our taste in music.." Alex started, looking as though he was deep in thought, "or anyone, for that matter.. but hey, we're the coolest cats you'll ever meet." He laughed, flipping his hair dramatically.

"At least, we try to think we're cool." Jack added. He looked like he was about to say more until Mrs. Barnes called the class' attention. Everyone fell silent almost immediately. She must be one of those teachers who is really sweet, but can be scarily angry.

Mental note: Don't piss off Mrs. Barnes.

Once first period let out, Alex, Jack and I all headed out the door together. I didn't realize how short I was until the two of them stood up. I had to look up slightly to see them. Both of them laughed immediately, Alex placing a hand on my head teasingly. "Shorty. How tall are you, anyway?" I fake pouted, grabbing my books in my arms before answering.

"5'2. I know. Stopped growing in 8th grade." I faked a sigh, what about you? "6 feet, and Jack is 6'2." I gaped, glancing at Jack to make sure that was correct. Which it was. I didn't even come up to his chin and I barely came up to Alex's. "Don't worry, it's cute." Jack added, while Alex looked a bit worried.

"Yeah, yeah, just be careful.." Alex huffed, he must've been the protective height, "who knows what some perv around this school might do to you." I laughed, he sounded like what the traditional father should sound like.

"A perv like you," Jack muttered, flashing a grin Alex's way. Alex responded with a slight shove to his shoulder, muttering a "shut up" as he did. I was pretty glad I met them, they seemed friendly, awesome, and had an epic taste in music.

Yeah, I could see friends in these guys. "What, you don't think I can't beat someone up?" I questioned, faking a pout. As if on que, they both burst out into laughter. I did, too, eventually. I was pretty weak, to be honest. Oh well.

Just as Jack opened his mouth to say something, he was interrupted for the second time today, but this time by a voice that didn't seem all that friendly.

"Hey, faggots!" I heard a male voice bellow. Alex and Jack's faces turned stone cold as the locked eyes with the boy the voice belonged to. Typical jock, in my book. He wasn't quite as tall as Jack, and seemed to be about Alex's height.

Judging by the size of his muscles, he must've been a football player. Feeling particularly brave, I opened my mouth to speak. Before I could, though, Alex's arm came in front of me, blocking me from the jerk.

I stayed still after receiving a glance from Alex, telling me to stay back. I stood slightly behind the two boys, watching everything unfold. "What do you want, Tyler?" I heard Jack grumble, clearly unamused and unbothered by his insult.

It only seemed to anger Tyler more, though. His gaze shifted between Alex and Jack for a minute. Alex piped up that, a grin spread across his face. "What, too scared to fight without your goons around you?" I'm not sure if they saw it, but I watched as Tyler clenches his fist, and I couldn't help but get a bad feeling.

I made a mental note not to hang around this guy, though. "Yeah, yeah, faggots. Watch yourselves.. and that pretty little slut of yours, too." He muttered, casting a cold glare my way.

Jack and Alex looked seething angry now as Tyler turned and sauntered down the hall, not looking back for a second. "That prick," Jack mumbled, glancing down at me sympathetically.
I, on the other hand, was not too phased by it. He didn't even know me, so how was he to know if I was a slut or not?

By the way, I wasn't.

I gave each of the boys sympathetic looks, patting them both on the shoulders. "Come on, don't let that fucker get your panties in a bunch." I laughed, and they both seemed to lighten up a bit. "'Sides, we should be getting to our next class right about now.." I muttered, glancing down at my schedule. History. Alright, I liked History good enough. It was my second favorite course. I was good at it, but it was dreadfully boring.

I came to learn that I had all the same classes with Alex, and the only class I didn't have with Jack was art, since he was taking a different elective.

I was starting to feel a lot better about this upcoming year, now. These two goofballs made it seem a lot more bearable.
