Just a Daydream Away

Chapter 17

~Jack's POV~

I hadn't spoken to Alex for almost a week now. Well I had tried talking to him, but he always ignored me or told me to leave him alone. I missed him. I missed the way his face lit up when he spoke about something he was passionate about, and the way he snuggled into my chest when we sat together, and his soft lips that I could kiss all day, and his big, brown eyes that I could get lost in forever. The list was endless.

I was currently sitting in my bed staring at the poster-covered wall. My mom had noticed my attitude change, and she kept bugging me about it, but I didn't tell her. I didn't want her to know. She worried too much. Blink was blasting from my stereo, and I just couldn't stop thinking about Alex. I wanted to hug him, and kiss him, and do many more things to him. I turned off my stereo and ran downstairs, grabbing my jacket on the way.

"Mom, I'm just going for a walk!" I shouted, and left the house before I could get a reply.

I headed for the place I always went to when I wanted to think and be alone: the big oak tree. It was really cold, the coldest it's been since winter, and I was shivering. I breathed into my hands to warm myself up, and it worked, sort of.

I got to the park and started walking along the path. The sky was black, and I could just about make out the outline of the tree, and my clouded breath in front of me. Suddenly, I tripped over something that was in the floor. I turned round to see what I had tripped over, and it looked like a body. I couldn't see a face, so I pulled out my phone and turned on the flashlight so I could get a better look. I rolled the body over to reveal a face covered in blood. It was Lex.

"Oh god! Lex? Alex wake up!" I shook his lifeless body, but nothing happened. Why was he here, like this? Why would someone do this to him? What if he was dead?! I checked for a pulse, and I found one. Good, but it was slow. His head was bleeding heavily, and his arm looked like it was in a funny position. I need to call an ambulance. I pulled out my phone again and dialled 911.

"911, how can I help you today?" A cheery woman asked from the other end of the line.

"Help, I need an ambulance. It's my boyfriend. He's unconscious and he's bleeding an-"

"Okay, sir, please calm down. What's the address?"

"Moorfield Park, it's by Dulaney High." I rushed, my words stuttering.

"An ambulance will be there as soon as possible."

I hung up, and looked back down at Alex.

"Alex baby please wake up. Please. Oh god." I was crying now, and had picked Alex up so he was cradled in my arms. His skin was pale and cold.

"Jack?" I whispered voice called my name. Alex's eyes fluttered open, but you could tell he was very weak.

"Oh, Alex you've woken up, thank god. An ambulance is on his way, it's going to be okay." I whispered into his ear.

"It hurts Jay, it hurts." He whimpered from underneath me, as his eyes slowly closed again.

"Shh, it's okay, help we be here soon. Just rest and think of nice things." I tried to keep my voice calm, but it broke as I started to cry. My tears rolled down my cheeks and landed in Alex's blood-filled hair. I stayed with him cradled in my arms until a stretcher was put down next to us and Alex was pulled out of my arms and placed on it. He was then carried into the back of the ambulance.

"Can I come too?" I asked. I dreaded the thought of them saying no.

"Are you family?" A woman in a green outfit asked me.

"No, I'm his boyfriend, but please, I'm all he's got, he doesn't have family." I pleaded. It was technically a lie, but mostly the truth. Alex had even said himself: 'I may as well not have any family because I never see them.'

"Okay, get in." The woman smiled at me, but the tone if her voice told me that she was annoyed.

We hurried to the hospital with people busying themselves around Alex the whole way there. When we stopped, Alex was pulled out of the ambulance and rushed inside. I ran next to his head, he'd grown more pale and I was terrified for him.

"Sorry sir, I'm afraid you can't go past this point. The patient needs to be operated on immediately." A small woman with dark hair and a nose ring had grabbed my arm, and was talking to me with a gentle voice.

"No, I can't, I promised I would never leave him!" My tears were now in full flow. I turned around to follow Alex but they had disappeared. "Fuck." I muttered, and sat down, resting my head on the wall behind me. the woman sat down too.

"My name is Tay, I'm a nurse here." The woman said to me. "Do you mind if I asked you a few questions?" She asked.

"Go ahead." I mumbled.

"Can you tell me the patients name?"

"Alexander Gaskarth."

"What's your name and your relation to Alexander?"

"Jack Barakat, and I'm his boyfriend."

The questions were simple, Tay asked for things like Alex's address, his age, and stuff like that. Then I had to give my account of what happened. She left about an hour and a half ago, and I was now sitting in the waiting room. My face was tear stained and my eyes had ran dry long ago. I had rung my mom to tell her what had happened and that I wouldn't be coming home tonight, and I rung Rian, Zack, and Vic. They were all really worried and said they would all stop by tomorrow after school. Rian said that he would tell the school that me and Alex won't be in due to the circumstances, and I was grateful for that.

"Jack Barakat?" A man stood at the door wearing a long white coat, looking around the room.

"Here." I replied, standing up.

"Follow me."

I followed him out of the room and down a corridor.

"We have finished operating, and have fixed him up the best we can. He's still asleep and unfortunately, we can't tell when he's going to wake up. He needed 3 stitches in his head, and he has a fractured shoulder and 2 broken ribs. From what we can tell, he was out in the cold for a long time last night, but we've managed to warm him up. It was a good job you found him when you did or he could be a lot worse." The man patted my shoulder. "You can see him now. If you need anything, just press the buzzer. You're free to stay as long as you want."

"Thank you." I smiled, as I opened the door and stepped inside the room. Alex was lying on the big hospital bed, perfectly still. He was wearing a sling on his right arm, and had a needle in his left, which was hooked to an IV. The heart monitor was beeping slowly, filling the silence. I sat down and grabbed his hand, waiting for him to wake up.
