The Selfless and the Brave

I was riding the train towards the school building. As we got closer to the jump off point I looked up. I saw Matt looking at me but I just looked away, when I turned back he was gone. I signed then jumped off, almost falling off the roof since Matt wasn't there to make sure that I didn't.

We scaled down the side of the building then landed on the ground. All around me as I walked I heard people talking about Matt and Alex’s fight. It was getting to the point of annoying. I just trying to tune them out as we walked.

I was now standing in the middle of the cafeteria, holding my tray of food, and had no where to sit. I looked around the room before my eyes landed on the person I seriously needed to talk to, Alex. I walked over and plopped down next to him. I watched as his eyes closed and he started to shake. What the hell?

“Hey dude, you alright?”

His eyes opened so I took a bite of my hamburger, his head slowly turned to look at me.

“I said, are you alright man?”

At first I was just looking at his eyes, then mine started to travel down his face. There was a huge bruise on there and I could see red marks on his neck that disappeared under his uniform. My jaw dropped open while his gazed dropped back to his gross looking bread. I swallowed my food before whispering to him.

“Holy fuck, dude, Matt didn't do that much damage. What happened to you?”

He just shook his head, got out his notebook and wrote, Nothing, I’m fine. Oh like hell.

“Bullshit. Come on. Let’s go to the bathroom.”

I got up and he followed slowly behind me. No more then a second later I realized he had stopped.

“Alex, what’s up?”

How long have they been staring?

I looked around and glared at the people who he was talking about. I knew why they were staring, but I didn't care. I sighed.

“Since I sat next to you. Now c’mon.”

I grabbed him by his arm and led him out into the hallway then into the bathroom.

“Take off your shirt.”

With the look he gave me you would have thought I just asked him to have sex with me.

“Forget about the Abnegation modesty crap for one second and take off your damn shirt, Alex!”

I took a deep breath to calm down before adding.

“I just want to make sure you’re okay.”

He nodded before taking off his grey top, I couldn't hold back my gasp. His side and stomach was covered in bruises. He looked down at the ground so I stepped forward and made him look at me. I looked at the damage to his face then back to the red mark on his neck. I gently touched them. My head put two and two together as I slowly turned him around.

“Holy shit.”

Whip marks littered his back. I started to gently trace them, just in pure shock.

“Holy shit, Alex.”

I turned him back around so that he was facing me. He looked up, his eyes meet mine, and he quickly looked back down. I watched as a few tears escaped his eyes and I quickly made him look up before pulling him into a hug. I could feel him crying into my shirt.

“Holy shit.”

We stood there until the bell rang, signaling that school was over. I didn't want to let him go, but I knew I had to. I let him go slowly then watched as he put his shirt back on.

“Alex, will you tell me who did this to you?”

He shook his head. I sighed in frustration and he looked at the ground.

“Don’t be upset, I’m not mad at you. I’m just pissed off that someone could do something like this to you.”

He gave a small nod but continued to look down at the ground. I gently lifted his head and looked deep into his eyes. How could someone hurt something that’s already so damaged? I moved a bit of his hair out of his face and sighed before stepping out of his way and watching him leave the bathroom. I made a silent pack to myself right then.

I will figure out what’s going on inside of his head, and I’ll protect him from anything.

Alright, sorry it took so long guys! I promise it wont next time (hopefully). We are having horrible weather here and my power keeps getting knocked out so I kept loosing everything.
