The Selfless and the Brave

Chapter Two

My day started out like any other. Wake up, get dressed in the Dauntless uniform, scarf down some breakfast, and run out to catch the train. As I jumped on I saw Matt racing to get on after me. I laughed at him and held out my hand to help him get on the train easier.

“Thanks man.”

“No problem. Learn to run faster next time.”

I laughed again, he rolled his eyes and punched my arm. Matt is my best friend. We've known each other since we were little and have been through it all. Matt has always been by my side and I've always been by his. We look out for each other.

We were starting to get close to where we had to jump off. I loved the way the wind whipped through my hair and clothes. I also loved the feel of adrenaline rushing through my veins before each jump.

I looked down at the other kids heading to school and saw a Abnegation boy just standing there watching us. Better give him a show. I let out a yell and jumped from the train, I loved being first to do that. I realized that I had jumped a bit early but luckily Matt grabbed me and pulled me onto the roof.

I looked at Matt and we both started to laugh as we moved down the building towards the ground below. The other kids from Dauntless were walking around us, when I glanced up I saw that Abnegation boy walking in front of us. He was getting pushed around but I just shrugged it off and looked at Matt.

“Oi, Matt, Thanks for saving my ass back there. I guess I just got a little excited.”

“I’m used to it by now Jack, trust me.”

We both laughed. That’s when I realized I was going to trip over something, or someone. The Abnegation boy had tripped and fallen in front of me. It was kind of annoyed that he couldn't seem to pay attention to where he was walking.

“Hey, watch it Stiff!”

I felt even more annoyed when I realized that the others had stopped to watch our exchange. I realized he hadn't said anything, just kept his head down and seemed to be looking around for something. That’s when I saw Matt bend down and pick up a notebook.

“What’s this, Stiff?”

I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Matt seemed to have a great time messing with Stiff’s. I didn't understand it personally but whatever, I would let him have his fun for now. I watched as the boy tried and tried again to grab it from Matt. Obviously it was something important to him or he wouldn't be trying this hard to get it back.

That’s when I heard someone in the crowd shout that the boy was a mute. I instantly felt bad for him. Then Matt started to tell the boy to ask for the notebook back. The crowd laughed and I watched as the boy blushed with embarrassment. Okay, that’s enough.

“C’mon Matt, give the Stiff his notebook.”

Matt gave me a look of, you're kidding me, right?

“What? Why should I?”

I normally didn't do this to Matt. I usually let him have his fun then we went on our way. But something about this Abnegation made me act differently. I grabbed the notebook from Matt and tossed it back towards the boy. I looked Matt right in the eye so that he knew I wasn't kidding around.

“Because I said so.”

Out of the corner of my eye I saw the boy scrambling for his notebook. Matt continued to glare at him.

“Stupid Stiff.”

I watched as the boy opened up his notebook and wrote two words I never thought a Abnegation would say, um, write. Fuck. You. I tried to hold back laughter that threatened to come out. I grabbed Matt’s arm so that he wouldn't try to kill the boy. I pulled him away and started to walk towards the school.

Yeah, that boy is definitely different. I glanced over my shoulder at him and he give me a tiny smile. I turned back around and continued to walk, but this time I could feel my cheeks were turning red. What the hell? I shook my head and tried to get that Abnegation out of my head, hoping I wouldn't be thinking about what just happened, or about him, for the rest of the day.

It didn't work.
