The Good Life

Times Like These Feel so Dangerous

*Izzy*

Vic held the door open for me as we walked into the restaurant. I was kind of embarrassed on how we had to meet up. Since we lived right across the street from each other and my parents would have seen me get into his truck, we had to meet at Lynn's house. I gave him Lynn's address and told Lynn the plan which she lectured about the whole time I waited for Vic to pick me up. He met me there at six-thirty then I got into his truck and we left to the restaurant. We made it to the restaurant around seven since it was a thirty minute drive and we had to leave this area by ten-thirty so I could make it home by eleven, my new curfew. I apologized at least five times for being so difficult but he said he didn't mind at all. He was probably just being polite.

"Hi I have a reservation under Vic." He told the hostess.

"Of course, right this way!" She said and led us to our table.

"Did I already mention how sorry I am that we had to go through so much just to go on one date?" I apologized again; that makes six.

"Yes now stop apologizing it's not your fault." He laughed.

"If I was born two years earlier we wouldn't have had this problem." I mumbled.

"Once again that's not your fault. It's your parents fault . . . well biological parents not Jack and Alex's." He stumbled nervously. "Unless um one of them is your uh biological dad then it is his fault not that it's a serious problem I was just-" I cut him off to help him.

"Dude chill it's okay. I was adopted." I told him.

"Oh... Do you know who your real parents are? If you don't mind me asking?"

"No I don't know them and no I don't mind. Papa told me that all the adoption agency would tell him was that they were Brazilian Descendants. He didn't get names or anything." I told him. I kind of wish Papa and Daddy got more information out of the agency just because I was curious to know more about those people. I didn't want them to be a part of my life, I just wanted to know why they gave me away. I at least deserved to know that.

"Is it weird having two Dads?" He asked and I laughed. I always got asked this question.

"No not really. I have to buy two Father's Day gifts, but I buy my Grandma, Auntie, and God-mom gifts for Mother's Day so I'm not missing out on anything. Plus my Aunt and God-mom are always there to help me with girl problems, if Papa can’t help me, so I’m not left completely in the dark.” I answered him. “Is it weird having a mom and dad?" I asked just to be funny.

"Kind of, my mom nags twenty-four/seven about everything little thing and my dad can care less about what goes on in the house as long as he has a beer in his hand. I think it would be easier for me to have two of my dad." He told me making me laugh.

A waiter came by to get our drink orders in the middle of us talking. I ordered Sprite and he got Coke.

"How are things with the band going?" I asked.

"Pretty good! We practiced a few songs that Mike and I wrote and we're going to start recording probably at the end of this month so we can send a few record companies some of our stuff." He told me.

"You guys are moving pretty fast." I commented.

"Yeah we have to so we can get as much attention as possible." He said.

We were interrupted again by our waiter asking us to order our food. We were at a steak house type of restaurant and I wasn't a huge steak fan so I ordered salmon and Vic ordered some kind of sirloin thing I couldn't really keep up with all the details.

"What do you have planned after high school?" He asked once the waiter left.

"I don't know. I can't figure out what I want to do with my life yet. Papa wanted me to be interested in business so I could help run his company once he retired, but none of that stuff interest me." I ranted.

"You've got plenty of time to figure something out." He said making me smile.

"Yeah I know I don’t want to leave too far from home though. The furthest I’ll probably got is Los Angeles. I just love San Diego so much! But what about you? How do you like being in San Diego so far? You don’t miss San Fan too much do you?" I asked.

"I actually got use to San Diego pretty fast. The weather is always awesome and everyone here is super relaxed. I just miss my friends." He said.

"That's it just friends? No love interest?" I asked being my normal nosy self.

"That's what you want to talk about on our date? My old exes?" He laughed.

"Exes huh? As in more than one?" I asked ignoring the rest of what he said.

"Yeah I've only been in two serious relationships. I don't like to talk about the first one because she cheated on me." He told me.

"Aw what about the second one?" I was sort of trying to get an idea of what a relationship with Vic would be like.

"It was exciting. Danielle was almost like a female version of me which I liked because we understood each other better that way. We decided to break up in the middle of senior year because she was moving to another state. Her dad was in the army so they moved around a lot." He sounded like he wasn't completely over her. I regretted asking him about her because now I was jealous. That was only less than a year ago they dated since Vic just graduated at the beginning of this year. He must have sensed from my silence that I felt weird about it because he added, "Don't worry, I don't still have feelings for her. That was a while ago and we agreed to just stay friends." He said making me feel better.

"Oh I was worried for a second." I said honestly and he chuckled.

"You have nothing to worry about. So what about you and your exes?" He asked.

"Exe" I corrected him.

"Just one?" He asked.

"Yeah just Nick." I stated. I knew he was going to ask more questions.

"Why did you and Nick break up?" He put emphasis on Nick’s name.

"He kept trying to pressure me into doing things I didn't want to do with him." I said nervously. This was turning into such an awkward conversation.

"What an asshole." He said and I laughed.

"I know." I said.

"You didn't do anything with him that you didn't want to did you?" He asked.

"Nope." I said proudly.

"Have you ever...?" I knew exactly what he was asking and my face started to heat up.

"No." I said looking away from him embarrassed.

"So you're still a vir-" I cut him off. He sounded so amused.

"Yes." I giggled.

"Oh well it's nice that you're still innocent." He said in a mocking tone trying not to laugh.

"I'm sorry I'm not as sexually advanced as you are." I joked and he laughed.

"Who said I was?"

"Your sarcasm did!"

"Alright alright I'm sorry. But really it's a good thing you're waiting for the right guy or until marriage or whatever." He said.

"No I'm not waiting ‘til marriage or anything. I just want to know that the guy I'm with isn't using me just for sex." I told him and he nodded.

"Noted." He smiled.

It was just nine-thirty so we had an hour left before we had to leave. We finished eating a little while ago and now we were laying in the bed of his truck looking at the stars trying to pass the time.

"My dad is so obsessed with space. Sometimes we sit outside and he points out different constellations to me. I used to think it was lame but the older I got the more interesting space became." I rambled.

"I just find it interesting because of the aliens." He said.

"You believe in aliens?" I asked, poking fun at him.

"All these stars and you're telling me you don't?" He sat up looking down at me.

"Hmm I don't know. Maybe." I said. "If they are out there do you think they’re looking at the stars wondering if we're real too?" I sat up next to him.

"Nah they probably got more important things to worry about."

"Like what?"

"...Space politics? Space sports? Space movies?"

"Why are you putting 'space' in front of everything?" I asked and he laughed.

"I don't know! Just change the subject." He chuckled.

"Umm oh! I might be a famous model pretty soon!" I said obviously exaggerating and he raised his eyebrows at me.

“You definitely have the looks.” He smirked and I felt myself starting to blush. “Who are you going to model for?”

“My dad’s clothing line.” I told him.

“Cool! I’m sure you’ll bring in a lot of business.” He was calmly complementing me and it was kind of embarrassing how much I enjoyed it.

“I’m not sure how many more complements I can take from you until I pass out.” I said and he laughed.

“I’m sorry it’s just you don’t seem to believe me when I say you’re so beautiful and I want to keep telling you until you actually do.” He said.

“You’re wasting your breath.” I said smiling.

“Obviously not if I’m making you smile.” He said, smiling back at me. I swear his smile was intoxicating. “So can we can talk about how fun our first date was." He said, placing his hand on my hand and making my stomach erupt into butterflies.

"It was really fun." I commented shyly.

"I think we should plan what to do on our second date?" He added.

"Second date?" That caught me off guard. I knew we enjoyed ourselves but part of me thought that Vic would get frustrated with the age difference, the sneaking around, and maybe the fact that I was a virgin and he wouldn't want to go through with this.

"Yeah that's how these things work! I'll let you decide what we should do next." He said.

"Okay! We can ummmmm...OH OH can we go to this Cupcake store in L.A?" I yelled with excitement.

". . . Cupcake store?" He asked confused.

"Yes I saw it on TV they supposedly sell the best cupcakes in the world!!" I told him.

"You want to go all the way to L.A . . . for cupcakes?" He snickered.

"It's just two hours away!" I whined.

"Hmm I don't know." He said in a joking tone.

"I can drive us!" I suggested and he frowned.

"No thanks! Didn't you say you just got your driver’s license? I don't trust you'll get us there and back safely." He said and I hit him.

"I got a ninety on the driver’s test I think that's good enough to get us there." I told him.

"Why'd you get a ninety and not a hundred?" He asked.

"I hit a cone while parallel parking." I mumbled and he busted out into laughter.

"You hit an innocent cone, see I can't trust you with my life." He joked. "No seriously I'm okay with taking us."

"Are you sure?" I asked timidly.

"Yeah! If you want the best cupcakes in the world then I'm going to take you to get the best cupcakes in the world." He said smiling at me sweetly.

I turned to try and kiss him on the cheek but he turned at the same time as me and I ended on kissing him on the lips. I quickly pulled away trying to explain myself but he put his hands on my cheeks and pulled me back to him, reconnecting our lips. It was just a simple kiss, but my head still spun when he pulled away.

We didn't say anything afterwards he just sat back against a wall of the truck with a smile on his face. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and I leaned into him, trying not to pass out.
