The Good Life

The Truth Won't Set Me Free

*Alex*

“Alex I’m going to the grocery store. Do you need anything?” Jack asked me.

“Madden 15!!” I yelled out, but he rolled his eyes at me and walked out the door.

We had a little less than two weeks until Izzy was born and Jack was more stressed than I was. He had been going to the store almost every two days to make sure we had enough food, diapers, and other baby materials. I tried to tell him we had more than enough baby products, but of course he wouldn’t listen to me. The only people he did listen to about these things were: his mother, Vicki, and Cassadee. Which does make sense since they would have more knowledge than I on this subject.

Halloween was in two more days, on Sunday, and Oli said he would throw a party this year. He was having the party tomorrow, Saturday, because we all had work on Monday so the party was the day before Halloween. I planned on having tons of fun that night because it would most likely be the last night I would be able to go out for a while. Jack, on the other hand, didn’t really want to go. I begged and he said yes, but he’s not dressing up. I’m decided to keep it simple and be a cop this year. The costume looked badass when I tried it on, and Jack couldn’t keep his eyes off of me.

Jack came back about forty minutes later with two bags full of items. He threw something in my lap and I looked down and saw it was the videogame I, jokingly, asked him to get for me.

“You actually brought it!!” I yelled in excitement and shock.

“Yeah you asked for it.” He shrugged not understanding why I would get so excited over a videogame about football.

“Is…is this some sort of trick?” I asked kind of skeptically about why he would just buy this without making me do something for it.

“Alex just play the damn game.” He giggled.

Playing videogames by yourself gets boring after a while, so I texted Rian and Oli to come over and play with me and they both responded saying they would be here in a few minutes. It felt like forever waiting for them both to get here but it was actually thirty minutes. Cass came over with Rian so she and Jack could put more unnecessary decorations in Izzy’s room.

“I call first game!” Oli yelled as he walked in the living room and Rian pouted.

“Don’t worry Rian, it won’t take long for me to whop Oli’s ass.” I bragged.

“Start the damn game.” Oli said confidently.

…Oli won the first stupid game because he’s a cheater, so I had to pass my controller to Rian.

“See what happens when you talk shit?!?” Oli gloated as he and Rian started their game.

“Don’t worry! Rian’s going to avenge me.” I patted Rian on the shoulder and watched them play.

Jack and Cass finally came downstairs in the middle of their game. “Alex tell Jack he has to dress up for Halloween.” Cass told me.

“I already told him, but he doesn’t feel like it.” I said.

“I’ll wear devil horns or something, but I don’t feel like getting into a costume this year.” He said.

“Well I am. I’m going to be Catwomen and Rian’s going to be Batman.” She said and I laughed. Of course Rian would agree to do a couples costume.

“I’m going to be a cop!” I exclaimed.

“pssh that’s lame. I’m going as Hugh Hefner and Hannah is going as a Playboy Bunny.” Oli said while trying to focus on the videogame.

“What’s up with all the couple costumes?” I asked.

“Couple costumes are cute!” Cass said and I rolled my eyes at her.

“What time does the party start?” Rian asked Oli.

“At nine. So when it turns Midnight we’ll actually be partying on Halloween.” Oli said. Rian and Oli’s game ended with Oli winning once again. “Fuck yeah! Who else wants some? Jack? Cassadee?” He yelled out.

“I’ll play, but I won’t know what I’m doing.” Cass laughed and took the controller away from Rian.

“Cassadee, please win so we don’t have to hear this bitch gloating anymore.” I sighed, knowing that that probably wouldn’t happen since it was her first time playing.

“I’ll try!”

The Next Day

“How do I look?” I asked Jack as I stepped out of the bathroom to our bedroom in my costume.
“I’d let you pull me over any day.” He said seductively.

“Stoooop!” I whined feeling myself blush.

It was almost nine-thirty which means we were kind of late to Oli’s party, but being early to a party is lame. I had to shower, fix my hair, and get my costume right. I could have started getting ready earlier, but I was just being lazy.

“You ready?” I asked Jack and he nodded. I grabbed my cop shades and we left.

I drove us to Oli’s house in Jack’s car because I love driving his car, it goes so smoothly. When we pulled up I saw Rian’s car, Alan’s car, Austin’s car, and some other people Oli and Hannah invited, cars outside. Thank god Hannah and Lisa still weren’t talking to each other so I wouldn’t have to see her here. I rang the doorbell and a few seconds later Hannah opened the door wearing a sexy black Playboy Bunny outfit.

“Hey guys!” She hugged us with a genuine smile on her face. Ever since she stopped talking to Lisa she’s been really nice to Jack and me. We walked in to their two story house and went straight to the kitchen where we heard most of the chatter.

“Here comes the cops to shut down the party.” Austin said when he saw me.

“Fuck the police!” Oli shouted. He already sounded like he’s had more than enough to drink.

“Shut up.” I laughed.

“Cass you look great!” I heard Jack tell Cass and I turned around to look. She did look great in her Catwoman costume. Rian’s Batman looked awesome too.

“Thanks Jack! And I have to admit you do look pretty good in that cop costume.” Cass said to me.
“I know I look sexy as hell.” I said and posed.

“You’re an idiot.” Jack laughed.

“Rian! Alex! You guys want to get your asses kick in beer pong?” Oli asked us.

“I’m down.” Rian said and I agreed. I made sure Jack was still with Cass and some of Hannah’s friends so I wasn’t leaving him there by himself.

Rian and I were winning at first, but somehow Austin and Oli were made a comeback. We both only had one more cup to make to win.

“Fuck!” Oli shouted after he shot his ball and missed.

“Rian I don’t want to lose!” I cried.

“Too bad.” Oli chuckled.

“You got this Alex.” Rian said and handed me a ball so I could shoot next. I didn’t like all the pressure being on me. I lifted the ball and just threw it, praying it would go in. I didn’t realize my eyes were closed until I heard Rian cheering and heard Oli and Austin cursing.

“We won!!” Rian shouted.

“You assholes got lucky” Austin said.

“It’s not luck its skill bitches!”

*Jack*

I could hear Alex and Rian yelling as they won another game of whatever they were playing. They had been playing forever, switching out with other people. We had been here for a little over two hours now I was talking with Cass, Hannah, and one of Hannah’s co-workers, Meredith. It’s always easier for me to get along with girls better than guys. Plus Hannah was being super nice to me now, Alex said it was because she and Lisa aren’t friends anymore. She asked me questions about Izzy and gave me helpful advice that she got from her mother. She was really pleasant to be around now.

“Would you like a margarita, Jack?” Hannah asked me as she handed Lucy and Cass one.

“No thank you. I’m going to have to drive and take care of Alex once the night is over.” I looked over at Alex who was having a chugging contest with the guys.

“They’re all going to have hangovers in the morning.” Cass said, shaking her head.

“At least you guys have someone to take care of. I hate being single.” Meredith whined.

“Every guy I try to set you up with you turn them down.” Hannah said.

“You don’t know what kind of guys I like.” Meredith said and Hannah rolled her eyes. Meredith kind of reminded me of a female version of Matt. Maybe Hannah and I could set them up when he gets back from the tour he’s on now.

I looked down at my phone and saw that I had one missed call, I must have accidently put my phone on silent cause I didn’t feel it ring. I unlocked it to see it was a call from Camila and automatically I started panicking. Why would she be calling me this late if something wasn’t wrong? I quickly called her back and José answered the phone.

“Hello? José is everything okay?” I said frantically. Cass, Hannah, and Meredith were all just staring at me with concern looks on their faces.

“Uhh not really. Camila’s water just broke.” He said calmly.

“What?” I yelled into the phone trying to process what he was telling me.

“Yeah. We’re at the hospital now, you can meet us here if you want.” He said.

“Okay we’ll be there soon.” I hung up.

“What happened?!?” Cass yelled at me.

“Camila’s water just broke so she’s at the hospital now.” I said trying to look around for Alex.

“Oh my god.” She gasped.

I found Alex, next to Oli, holding what was probably his six-hundred beer for the night. “Alex we gotta go to the hospital!” I said hurriedly.

“Wa-what happened?” he kind of slurred. At least he wasn’t completely drunk.

“Camila is going into labor!” I exclaimed and his eyes grew wide.

“She’s giving birth right now?” He asked.

“Y-you guys are having a baby r-right *burp* right now?” Oli asked. He was completely drunk.
“No she will be in a few hours.” I told them.

“Oh…then why are we rushing?” he asked and I rolled my eyes.

“Because I don’t want her to go through this alone.” I grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the door. “Thanks for inviting us, Oli and Hannah!” I said.

“Of course! And we’ll be at the hospital as soon as she’s born!” Hannah said and Oli waved.

“Rian and I will be there in like an hour from now.” Cass told us.

“Okay. I’ll text you.” I said as Alex and I walked out the door.

I grabbed my keys from Alex’s back packet and unlocked the car. I opened the passenger side door for him to make sure he was in before I went to the driver side to get in. My hands were shaking because I was so nervous. Camila wasn’t supposed to go into labor for another two weeks. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe the doctor told her the wrong due date.

“Stop worrying, baby. I’m sure everything is going to be fine.” Alex said and grabbed my hand.

“I can’t help it. Why aren’t you stressed out?” I asked him. I thought he would be more worried than I am.

“The alcohol keeps me relaxed.” He laughed and I rolled my eyes. Alex is going to look so silly walking into the hospital dressed as a cop.

We pulled up to the hospital, got out of the car and walked into the doors. We went to the front desk and I asked the lady which room would Camila be in. The lady had to make sure we were on the visitors list and told us room 509. We walked to the elevator in went to the fifth floor. The closer we got to the room the harder my heart would beat. I couldn’t believe this was happening today. When we got outside the door I couldn’t bring myself to knock or anything. I just stood there frozen.
“What’s wrong?” Alex asked me.

“This is really happening.” I whispered.

“This is what you wanted isn’t it?” He said.

“Yeah. I’m just shocked that today will be the day that we bring our daughter home.” I smiled.
“Well technically it’ll be tomorrow since it’s almost midnight.” Alex said. “Hey her birthday will be on Halloween!” He said contently.

“That’s cool. Are you ready?” I asked him.

“Are you ready?” he asked back and I took a deep breath and nodded. He knocked on the door and I heard Camila’s small voice say ‘come in.’ I opened the door and we walked in to Camila laying in the hospital bed in a grown. She didn’t look like she was in any pain yet.

“Hi Jack!” She said cheerily. “And you must be Alex?” She extended her hand for him to shake. She and Alex never met each other because I never did make an effort for them to meet. I know Alex is going to scream at the top of his lungs at me when he finds out I’m paying her and José fifty-thousand dollars.

“Yeah I’m Alex. It’s nice to finally meet you! And thank you so much for doing this for us.” Alex exclaimed.

“Oh of course…Officer!” She said causing us to laugh.

“Where’s José?” I asked Camila.

“He’s downstairs in the cafeteria eating.” She said.

“Oh. Well how do you feel?” I asked her.

“I feel okay. These contractions hurt like hell though, but they’re like thirty minutes apart. The doctor said I can’t get the epidural shot until I’m at least four centimeters dilated.” She sighed.

“I’m sorry.” I apologized.

“It’s not like you got me pregnant.” She laughed.

“Did they say how long you’re going to be in labor?” Alex asked her.

“He said maybe eight hours.” She said.

“We’re going to be here forever.” Alex whined and sat down in the chair next to Camila’s bed.

“It’ll be worth it when she’s born.” Camila said and Alex nodded. “Do you guys have her room set up?” She asked.

“Yeah we spent all last month getting it ready for her.” I smiled thinking about Izzy’s pink room. Before Camila could respond, José walked in.

“Oh hey Jack and Jack’s friend.” José said in an uninterested tone as he sat down in the other chair next to Camila’s bed.

“This is Alex…my boyfriend.” I told José, who looked and then shook his head at us. I didn’t really give two flying fucks what he thought because after we got Izzy and he got his money I never had to see him again.

“Whatever. Does he know the rules?” He asked, but continued anyways. “One, once this kid is born and I finish this semester in school we’re moving. We don’t want you or her looking for us ever so I won’t tell you where we’re going.” Camila told me they just happen to be switching schools so they weren’t just moving because of this whole situation. “Two, Camila doesn’t want to know what you’re naming her and she doesn’t want to see her so as soon as she’s born you guys can have her. Three-“ Alex cut him off thankfully. I’m pretty sure the third thing was going to be about the money.

“How will this work? Like are we going to sign the birth certificated and then she’s ours?” Alex asked.

“Remember the papers I made you sign like two months ago? I submitted them to a court so a judge can approve them. So she’s legally ours when we sign the birth certificate.” I informed Alex.

“And don’t forget we can ‘change our mind’ when she’s born. So if we don’t get the money then you won’t get the baby.” José scolded. I sighed and turned to Alex, who looked so confused.

“What are you talking about? What money?” Alex asked quickly. I put my head in my hands dreading José’s answer.

“The fifty-thousand you and Jack are paying us for this baby.” He said raising an eyebrow.

“……Oh right… that money……Jack can I speak with you in the hall for a bit?”

Fuck my life

Notes

I have no clue on how the before and after process of having a baby works. So if this makes no sense blame Texas' health courses not me! Also Tay from last chapter was Tay Jardine and her baby nephew, Kellin, is of course Kellin Quinn.
