The Good Life

For the Best

*Alex*

I walked out to my car half expecting Jack to run after me saying he made a mistake, but that didn’t happen. I didn’t meant to come off as an asshole when I talked about his father it was an accident. I was just so sick about hearing that Jack wanting to get married and have kids and I stopped paying attention to what I was saying. If Vicki didn’t have to intervene in our relationship we probably wouldn’t have had a fight at all, and Jack overreacted which made things ten times worse. Right now I don’t want to try and fix things with us because I’m still angry. When we do try to get back together I’m going to have to tell Jack that we can’t talk about getting married or anything until we’re both comfortable with it. If he doesn’t like that plan then I guess we really shouldn’t be together.

I took my trash bags and went to Rian and Cass’s house so I could stay with them. I was still a little uncomfortable being around my dad and Dr. Fey so I didn’t want to stay with him. When I made it to their house, I knocked on the door and waited for someone to let me in. I didn’t call before I came over because I was thinking too hard the whole drive to their place.

“Hey Ale- No no no!! What happened?” Cass said when she opened the door and say me holding a trash bag full of my stuff.

“Jack and I had a fight and he kicked me out. I knew this would happen.” I kind of chuckled thinking about the situation.

“Come on.” Cass said as she moved out of the way and let me in her house.

“What is he doing here?” Rian Joked as I sat down next to him on the couch.

“I got kicked out.” I sighed and put my head in my hands.

“Tell us what happened.” Cass said.

“The same argument as always. He wants to get married and he wants kids, but I’m not ready for any of that shit.” I said.

“I think that you guys are in two different points in your lives and neither of you want to sacrifice your wants for the others so that’s a hint that you guys should probably…just…maybe…shouldn’t be together at this time.” Cass said. Usually she’s the one who says that we should try to make things work so if Cass was saying we should break up, it was probably best for us to call it quits.

“I think you’re right.” I told her.

“Well you guys have been together for two years, you still weren’t ready to marry him?” Rian asked.

“It’s not that I wasn’t ready, I guess I’m just afraid of divorce so I want to make sure we were perfect for each other before we rushed into something we would regret later on in life.” I said.

“Well you’re welcome to stay with us for as long as you need to.” Cass offered, but I didn’t want to be a bother to her and Rian.

“Thank you. I’ll try to be out in a week once I get my shit together. First I have to finish getting all my stuff from Jack’s house.”

“We have an extra room. We can be roommates again.” Rian offered.

“Dude no. I rather live with my father then impose of you guys.” I said.

“You hated living with your dad. Stop being stubborn and move in with us again. Cass and I were talking about how boring and empty the house feels without you. We thought we were ready to be alone, but were not.” Rian said and Cass laughed along with him. I knew they were probably just saying that so I wouldn’t feel so bad about staying with them, but I really hated the idea of moving back in with my father.

“Okay I’ll stay with you guys until I can find a place of my own. I’ll try to be out in a month.”

The Next Day

I called my job and told them I was sick so I could go to Jack’s house and pick up the rest of my crap. I don’t remember Jack saying anything about going to work so he was probably going to be home when I got there. Rian offered to take the day off from work to help me, but I told him I could get the rest of my things by myself. In reality I wanted to go alone just in case Jack was home and we started arguing again. The only thing I had the house was clothes and shoes, video games, CD's, and a couple of other small items.

I unlocked the door and slowly walked into the house, looking around for Jack. It was ten am and Jack was usually waking up around this time. I brought suitcases to put my stuff in so I wouldn’t have to carry it in trash bags this time. I went to the living room to get my Xbox one and the games to go with it. I made sure I had everything I needed out of there so once I packed the rest of my clothes from Jack’s room, I could leave. I walked into the bedroom and heard the shower running. I saw Jack’s silhouette behind the frosted glass shower door. I didn’t bother telling Jack I was here I just went straight to the closet to pack my clothes and shoes. I had been packing for almost fifteen minutes when I heard the shower cut off and Jack open the door to step out. Since my closet was directly across from the shower, Jack saw me as soon as he stepped out. He yelped because he wasn’t expecting me to be there and grabbed his towel to cover himself. It took all of my willpower not to look at him

“Oh I didn’t hear you come in.” He took a deep breath and walked to his closet to get dressed.

“I won’t be long.” I mumbled and continued to pack up my stuff. Maybe twenty minutes later I had finished packing and I started to take all my things to my car. Jack sat in the kitchen, without saying a word, and watched me walk back and forth putting my stuff away. When I finished I took his house key and sat it on the table in front of him. I began to walk away, but he stopped me.

“That’s it? No good-bye or maybe we should try again? You’re just done?” He hissed.

“Are you serious, Jack? You said you were done. You were the one who told me to get out. What the hell was I supposed to do?” I tried my best to not raise my voice, but I was so frustrated.

“I don’t know!! I was angry and not thinking straight. And I’m conflicted now because I love you so much, but I know we’ll never agree on anything and we’re just going to argue all the time.” He said.

“I’m not the guy for you Jack. You need someone who can give you everything you want. Someone who won’t make you wait forever to marry you. Someone who will give you as many children as you want. I only cause you pain and misery and…you deserve someone better than me.” I tried to wipe my eyes so before he could see any tears, but it was no use. I hated for him to see me cry.

“Alex don’t say that.” He came up and put his arms around me.

“We both know it’s true.” I slowly pulled his arms away from me. “So I’m going to leave and I want you to find somebody that can give you everything I couldn't.” I looked at him one last time and walked towards the door so I could leave before I changed my mind.

“Alex please!!!” Jack whimpered.

I continued to walk to my car and drove away. This was the only way I could be sure he would be happy.
