The Good Life

The Forgotten Birthday

Jack

~Three months later~

"Happy birthday." I woke up to Alex kissing against my neck.

"Thank you." I smiled and rolled my head over to give him more space to kiss. I was surprised he actually remembered my birthday without me giving him any hints. Since it was summer no one paid attention to the date so my birthday was always forgotten about.

Alex rolled me on to my back and climbed on top of me. "What do you want to do today?" He asked as he began undressing me.

"Hmm I don't know. You don't have anything planned?"

“. . . No. I thought I would let you choose what you wanted to do."

"Oh um we can just chill here together. We don't have to go anywhere." I told him and he rolled his eyes.

"We have literally 'chilled' here together since the beginning of summer. We're probably going to do that for the rest of the summer." He complained.

"Fine. What do you have in mind?"

"Let's go day drinking!" He exclaimed.

"Alex it's ten am, I am not going drinking this early."

"Just because you're an old man doesn't mean you have to act like it."

"You're older than me!"

"Yeah, but I don't act like it."

"I'm not going day drinking so pick something else." I chuckled.

"We can just stay home all day...again." He said bitterly.

"That's what I wanted to do!"

He rolled his eyes and got himself undressed for birthday sex. We made love and then took a shower together. I initiated round two in the shower which kind of caught Alex off guard.

When we finished dressing we went to the kitchen so I could watch him make breakfast for me. I answered my birthday text messages while Alex began getting out cooking materials.

"Alright babe what do you want to eat?" He asked me.

"Umm I want an omelet." I said.

"I'm surprised you didn't say pancakes or waffles." He chuckled.

"No I want something different today."

He began cutting up ingredients for my omelet and I watched. His phone started vibrating on the counter and he picked it up and read the text. He quickly typed a response and sat his phone back down. I wouldn't have paid it any mind, but his phone vibrated again and he quickly picked it up.

Usually he wouldn't rush to answer his phone. He also was holding it to the side as if he didn't want me to see his messages.

"Who are you texting so much?" I casually asked him. I wasn't making assumptions, I was just curious.

"My new boyfriend." He joked and I playfully rolled my eyes.

The doorbell rang and Alex tried to get it while he was still cooking; he hated for me to lift a finger on my birthday. I told him not to worry about it and walked to the door myself. When I opened it there was no one there, just a vase full of roses. I picked them up and read the card. It said "Happy Birthday, Jack! -Love the Fuentes."

I smiled to myself as I bought them in and sat the roses on the kitchen table. They had been sending us things for the last few months. Vicki, Mike, and Vic would even say hello if we were outside at the same time. Alex and Emilio were the only two that didn't say a word.

"Let me guess, are they from the Fuentes'?" Alex asked.

"Yes and we're not throwing them away. They're beautiful! I love red roses!" I exclaimed and he rolled his eyes.

"I don't know why they are trying to be so nice to us."

"Well Vic wants to be allowed to see his baby, and Vicki is probably afraid and doesn't want us to call the cops." I told him.

"I was never going to call the cops, it was just an empty threat. And maybe Vic can visit the baby I guess." He mumbled the last part and I chuckled.

"So do actually have a heart in your chest." I joked and he glared at me. My mom began to FaceTime me before I could say anything back to him. I swiped my screen to answer her call.

"Happy birthday Jack!" She exclaimed.

"Thanks mom." I laughed.

"What are you going to do today?"

"Nothing. I'm just going to relax with Alex and Izzy."

"That sounds so boring. Get out and go do something." She told me.

"I told him the same thing, Joyce." Alex said.

"I don't want to do anything. I just want to spend today indoors with you two." I said.

"Fine we can stay home for…now." Alex said and I smiled victoriously.

"Has May called you?" My mom asked.

"No I'm sure she's still sleeping. Its summertime so everyone sleeps later now."

"Yeah I forgot since I'm not working anymore." She chuckled. She retired last month so now she was free to spend her time doing whatever she wanted. She was still in the happy to be at home phase, but I'm sure she would get bored of it pretty soon.

"How does retirement feel?" Alex asked her.

"Oh so good! I feel like I don't have a care in the world." She laughed.

"Ugh I'll know that feeling one day." He laughed with her.

"You'll love it! But I'm going to let you two go now. I'm still coming next week to stay and help with Izzy, okay?"

"Okay mom. Bye. I love you."

"Love you too." She said and we hung up.

Alex walked over and placed my omelet in front of me.

"Go give it to your new boyfriend." I said childishly.

"Oh my god. You're my boyfriend." He chuckled.

"I'm your husband." I corrected.

"You knew what I meant."

I took of a few bites of the delicious omelet then I went back to texting people back. I needed to text Cass, Hannah, Austin, Oli, Rian, David and a few employees back. Alex came to sit next to me with his own omelet and I laid my head on his shoulder. I loved that he was a teacher. We were able to spend two whole months out of the year together uninterrupted, except for the few days I had to work.

Izzy finally walked into the kitchen after we were almost finished eating. She was six months pregnant now and she definitely looked it. Her body was so small before I didn't think she could handle carrying a baby, but she was doing it so far.

"Happy Birthday Papa!" She came over to hug me and I hugged her back.

"Thanks Hunny! Are you hungry?" I asked.

"Yeah, but I just want cereal. No weird cravings for today." She chuckled. Alex and I watched her make her cereal. Sometimes we couldn't help but stare because it was hard to come to the terms that she was actually pregnant.

"Does it hurt?" Alex asked her while pointing at her stomach.

"No…Well my feet hurt and the heartburn hurts plus my back kind of aches and I can feel the baby kick sometimes. Yeah it hurts." She sighed.

"I can't even imagine what that feels like." I said.

"Really? Didn't you hold Izzy in your stomach for nine months?" Alex jokingly asked, making me laugh.

"You're stupid." I chuckled and went back to eating.

We finished eating and Alex picked me up, against my wishes and carried me back to bed. He said he wanted to lay back down with me for an hour or two, but that really meant sex.

We laid in bed making out, but he stopped when he heard his phone vibrate. He picked it up, responded to the text, and then went back to kissing me. I didn't pay it any mind until he pulled away a second time to do the same thing. When he tried to kiss me I turned my face.

"What?" He asked.

"Why is your phone getting more attention than me?" I asked stubbornly and he sighed.

"I just have to take care of a few things."

"Like what?"

"Uh is that really important?"

"Do you want to have sex right now?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Then it's really important."

He looked conflicted as he thought about it. "Ugh I can't tell you." He whined.

"Why not?"

"I just can't."

"At least tell me who you're texting."

"It's a group message between me, Oli, Rian, and Austin." He answered.

"What could you possibly be texting about with them that's so secretive?"

"Um Rian's having an affair." He said quickly and I almost believed him but then I thought about it.

"That is such a lie, Rian would never." I chuckled.

"Oli's having an affair?" He said trying to see if I would believe that instead.

"Okay I'm bored of this conversation and horny so just take my pants off." I huffed.

"Oh thank god!" He exclaimed as he undressed both of us a second time.

We finished round three and fell asleep wrapped in each other's arms. I woke up before Alex and saw that his phone had ten messages from the guys. We trusted each other to know one another's pass codes, but I didn't want to pry in his phone. Well I did want to but I wasn't going to. His phone vibrated again and it was like it was calling my name. Alex woke up and kissed me on the forehead. He picked up his phone and read the messages.

"Shit." He said and got out of bed. He quickly began putting his clothes on.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"I have to go meet up with the guys."

"What do you mean you have to meet up with them?"

"They need my help with something."

"Alex you said that we could spend my birthday together." I complained.

"I know. I'm sorry! I'll make it up to later on tonight I promise." He came over and kissed me before quickly walking out.

"You're an asshole!" I yelled after him.

"I love you too!" He called out to me.

I pouted and crossed my arms over my chest. Whatever he was doing with the guys better had been really important. Now I was going to spend my birthday basically alone.

Izzy walked in my room seconds later after Alex left. She looked confused to see me in bed alone. "Where did Daddy go?" She asked.

"To meet up with his friends, who are more important than me?" I said dramatically.

"Oh that sucks. So what are you going to do for the rest of your birthday?"

"I guess just lay here all day."

"Why don't you call David and see if he wants to hang out. You two can go drinking or something." She said. I didn't feel like drinking before, but dealing with Alex made me want to.

"I don't know if David wants to go out drinking this early."

"Well call him and see." She insisted.

I sighed as I picked up my phone and called him. His phone only rung twice before he answered.

"Hey Birthday Boy! What's up?" He said.

"Nothing much. Are you busy?" I asked.

"Nope, why?"

"Come with me to get drinks. I wanna get drunk." I said and he chuckled.

"Aren't you spending time with Alex?"

"No he went to go hang out with his friends. So we're going out." I demanded.

"Okay give me an hour to get ready!" He exclaimed and we hung up.

"Are you guys going?" Izzy asked as she texted on her phone.

"Yep!"

"Cool I'll help you pick out something to wear!"

We went to my closet and looked for outfits. I wanted to wear something comfortable and causal, but everything she suggested was kind of fancy.

"Why would I wear a blazer to a bar?" I asked.

"Because it's your birthday. You should want to dress up." She said.

"I guess."

I laid the close on my bed and went to take a quick shower. Once I was dressed and finished with my hair, David was outside waiting for me. I told Izzy bye and walked out to his car.

"You look sexy!" David exclaimed as I got in.

"Thanks." I mumbled.

"Don't pout! We're supposed to have fun. Just because Alex left doesn't mean you can't enjoy the rest of your birthday."

"Yeah you're right. Let's go!"

David took us to a bar that was down town. I'd never been to it but it was pretty lively at five pm.
"Let's get you so drunk that you'll barely remember who Alex is." He joked and I chuckled.

"That's impossible, but you can try."

He asked the bartender to pour us two shots. The glasses were double shot glasses so it kind of scared me. The bartender handed us the glasses and David gave me the one I thought was for him.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"I'm not going to drink. I'm just here to help you get drunk." He said suspiciously.

"Okay." I narrowed my eyes at him, but I continued to take both shots.

Two hours later I was up drunkenly dancing with some strangers. I don't remember anyone asking me to dance, but I was doing it. David was dying laughing and taking pictures. I was too drunk to be embarrassed.

My phone started ringing and I moved off of the dance floor to answer it. I saw Alex's picture pop up on the screen and I rolled my eyes.

"Hello."

"Hey where are you? Why is it so loud?" He chuckled.

"I'm at a bar with David drinking and dancing my feelings away." I slurred.

"Wow you are completely drunk. Let me talk to David." He told me.

"Why should I?"

"Because I love you so much and you love me." He said as if I were a child.

"If you loved me you wouldn't have left me alone on my birthday."

"I'm sorry, babe. You're right I shouldn't have."

"You're damn right I'm right."

"Yep you're always right so can I talk to David now?"

"Fine." I stumbled over to David and handed him my phone.

"Hey Alex." He said without looking at the screen. "Yeah he's completely wasted...I know but I couldn't stop him...yes...yeah I know where...okay bye." He hung up and gave me my phone back. "Come on let's go." He told me.

"No I'm not ready to go." I complained.

"Yeah but it's getting late and you should get back to Alex."

"I don't wanna. He left me on my birthday." I complained.

"I know. Everyone knows because you've told literally everyone at this bar, but we need to go." He helped me stand straight and walked me towards the door. I was so drunk I couldn't push him off or walk in the opposite direction so I just let him take me to the car.

Once I was safely in he got in the driver’s seat and drove us away. Even though I was drunk I could see that we weren't going in the direction of my house.

"Where are you taking me?" I asked and he shushed me.

Minutes later we were parking in front of Rian's house. "Wa-wait what are we doing here?" I slurred.

"Come on." He said ignoring my question and helped me out of the car.

He walked with me to the front door and opened the door.

"Surprise!!" I heard everyone yell, but I passed out before I could even step one foot in.

***

I woke up in a bed with an ice bag being pressed to the side of my head. I looked up to see Alex holding it and staring worriedly at me.

"Thank God." He said and leaned down to kiss my forehead.

"Ugh what happened?" I groaned and tried to sit up.

"No no don't move." Alex said and held me down. "You passed out. Do you remember?"

"No the last thing I remember was being at a bar with David." I complained.

"This is all my fault for trying to surprise you."

"Huh?"

"I've been planning the party for you for a while. I left the house to help them set up, Izzy talked you into calling David, and David distracted you until it was time for the party. You just weren't supposed to get so drunk." He chuckled.

"Oh. I feel stupid." I lightly shook my head.

"Don't. I should have known better than to keep secrets from you." He said making me smile.

"Yeah you know how much I hate secrets." I chuckled.

"I'm sorry. Next time I'll just tell you I'm throwing you a surprise party." He joked.

"We can still enjoy this one. It's not too late." I said hopefully and he laughed.

"Jack it's nine am. You slept during your whole party."

"Oh no! I'm so sorry Alex!"

"It's okay. We took lots of pictures of you so you could remember this night." He snickered.

"Hell no! Delete them!" I cried.

"It's too late, a few of them are already on Facebook."

"You're all going to pay for this. Where is everyone anyways?" I asked.

"I think they're eating breakfast now."

"Help me up. I have a few choice words for them." I pouted.

We walked downstairs to the kitchen where everyone was eating. They all clapped and cheered for me as I walked in.

"Fuck all of you." I said bitterly and they laughed.

"Jack your birthday party was so much fun." May said as I sat next to her. Alex went grab our both plates of food.

"Yeah I wish you were here to enjoy it with us." Cass added.

"He was here in spirit because he looked pretty dead." Austin joked.

"I literally have nothing to say to any of you." I chuckled.

"Yeah leave him alone. It's not his fault he passed out." Alex said as he took a seat next to me.

"Whose fault is it?" Rian asked.

"David's!" I exclaimed and David shook his head at me.

"No no you continued to drink after I said you should stop." He said and I rolled my eyes.

"Wait do you guys want to know the best part of all of this?!" Oli could barely talk because he was laughing so hard.

"What Oli?" I sighed and prepared to be even more embarrassed.

"We have you passing out recorded." He tossed me his phone.

Everyone surrounded me as I pressed play. The video was pitch black dark and silent. Then all of the sudden David opens the door, the lights come on, and everyone yells surprise as I fall to the floor. I could help myself from laughing with everyone else. It was hilarious to actually see it for myself.

Alex kissed me on the cheek apologizing again. I turned to kiss him and thank him anyway for throwing me a party.

Notes

So I think I know how I want to end this story. It won't be anytime now, but I needed to figure it out so I could start curving it in that direction. I wish it could write this forever but I would start to run out of ideas lol
