A Walking Travesty

Hang In There, Please

JACK’S POV

Just as I begin to sit in my chair for homeroom, Sasha comes running in.

“I’m so sorry.” She breathed and ran back out of the room.

Sorry for what?

Emma.

I jump up and run into the hallway. I don’t see any sign of her and can’t remember which bathroom they were in. Fuck I wish I knew this school better. I run to one of the bathrooms and see a girl walk out.

“Is Emma in there? Blond hair, hazel eyes?” I ask crazily.

She looks at me like I’m a freak and shakes her head.

I run off to the other bathroom, pushing through everyone and everything. What the fuck could’ve happened?

“JACK! JACK!” I hear in the distance.

“EMMA!” I yell back, just as the bell rings.

I look to the nearest bathroom and see her stumbling out. I push past everyone not caring who I hurt along the way. Just before I get to her, she collapses. I fall onto the floor next to her and gather her into my arms. I see blood running down her neck from the top of her head. Em isn’t moving.

“Emma, please wake up.” I beg. “Please, wake up please!”

I shake her lightly and get no response from her. I lean my head down to her chest and listen for a heartbeat. I hear something, thank fucking god.

“EMMA PLEASE!” I yell at her more scared than ever. “SOMEBODY CALL 911!”

A couple of people stop and look at us, throwing their hands over their mouths in horror. I don’t blame them. Emma needs a hospital now.

I pull out my phone taking matters into my own hands. I call 911 and have them send an ambulance right away. Carefully, I lift Emma into my arms and run her outside to the front of the school waiting for the ambulance. I wrap my arms around her, trying to keep her warm as we sit alone outside.

I can’t believe this is actually happening. What the fuck did Sasha do to her? I’m never letting Emma out of my sight ever again. My eyes well up with tears as I realize that this is all happening, and for some reason, I feel like it’s my fault. I need someone right now. I need my mom. I reach for my phone and dial her number.

“Why aren’t you in class?” I hear my mom ask after the second ring.

“Mom.” I choke out. “I need you. Emma needs you. We need you mom please.”

“Jack slow down, what’s wrong?” My mom asks. I can hear her car keys jingle in the background. “Do you need me to pick you up?”

“I need you to meet me at the hospital mom please. The one right down the street from our house. I’m okay, but Emma isn’t. I’ll explain when you get there. Please mom.” I plead in fear.

“I’m on my way.”

All of a sudden, I hear sirens and see flashing red lights approaching. The ambulance pulls up to the curb quickly and two EMT’s hop out of the van. One opens the back while the other jogs up to me.

“What happened sir?” He asks as he snaps his gloves on quickly.

“I have no fucking idea. I was sitting in class and this girl came up to me saying ‘I’m so sorry’ and she ran off. I knew that she had been talking to Emma in the girl’s bathroom. I went to find her and she had collapsed in front of the bathroom. The back of her head is bleeding like hell.” I lift her up gently to show him.

“I’ll take her from you. Thank you.” The EMT slips his arms where mine are and carries her to the van. Immediately, I panic.

“Wait, can I ride in the ambulance? Please, I need to make sure she’s okay.” I beg them, running after Emma’s body.

“What is your relation to the girl?” The taller one of the men asks.

“Her brother.” I lie.

They both nod at me and I hop into the back, sitting next to her body that is now on a stretcher. I grab her hand in both of mine and kiss it softly. “It’ll be okay Emmabear.” I whisper.

The ambulance takes off to the hospital and all I can do is talk to Emma.

“You’ll be okay. I swear to god all of this will be okay. You’ll wake up soon and we can just move on. It’s going to be okay.”

As I say these words, I realize that I’m trying to reassure myself that they are true. I don’t know what happened, but I do know that it doesn’t look good. I don’t know what I would do without Emma. I know I’m overreacting, but shit, I’m pretty damn scared. Before I know it, we are stopped at the hospital and they are pushing Emma’s gurney down the halls.

“Jack!” I hear my mom call.

I turn around and there she is. I collapse into her arms. She rubs my back in slow circles, relaxing me. My head is throbbing and my pulse is racing. I grab her by the hand and jog, trying to catch up with Emma. Immediately, a doctor stops us.

“I’m sorry but she needs to have staples. From there, we will evaluate her further and see how she is. We will call you back when she has a room. We have contacted her parents and they are on their way.” The doctor places a hand on my shoulder.

My mom walks me back to the seating and sits next to me. “Jack, what happened?” She asks quietly.

I explain to her exactly what I explained to the EMT’s. She nods and listens, but I can tell she is just as confused as I am.

“Who is this Sasha girl? Do you think she hurt her?” My mom asks.

“I KNOW she hurt Emma. I just don’t know why.” I admit while fiddling with my thumbs.

My mother lets out a loud sigh and melts into her chair. “Why would anyone hurt Emma? She is such a sweet girl. She doesn’t deserve this.” My mom says sadly.

Just then, a woman with long blond hair and dark brown eyes comes bursting through the hospital doors. I hear her ask what room Emma is in. She is told to sit like we were. She sits and bounces her knee up and down, clearly distressed.

“I’ll be right back.” I murmur to my mom.

I get up and walk over to Emma’s mom. I stand awkwardly until she looks up at me confused.

“Hey. I’m Jack Barakat. I’m not sure if you know this, but I was the one who called the ambulance for your daughter.” I explain.

Emma’s mom immediately motions for me to sit next to her and I do so. “What happened? From what the doctors told me, she needs staples because something happened at school?” She looks so frazzled.

“Honestly, she was beat up by a girl named Sasha. I have no idea why. Your daughter is the sweetest, most beautiful girl I know. Unfortunately, people at school don’t see her that way. Why Sasha has chosen to hurt your daughter so badly, I will never understand. It’s outrageous.” I explain to her as best as I can.

“How do you know my daughter?” She asks me.

“We have homeroom together. She’s my best friend.” That’s true technically. It’s not the WHOLE truth, but last thing I want is for Em to be in trouble when she wakes up.

“Thank you so much for helping my daughter. You don’t have to stick around sweetie, I’m sure your mom wouldn’t like that.” Emma’s mom offers.

“Actually, my mom is over there.” I point. “It’s like I said before; Emma is my best friend. If you don’t mind, I’d like to wait.”

She nods and smiles at me, still a little shaken up. I leave her be and walk over to my mom.

“Do you want to go get some breakfast or something?” My mom offers up. “She’s going to be a while.”

“No. I don’t want to leave just in case she’s released.” I shake my head. “Go ahead without me mom. I’m feeling a little better now so take your time. I’ll call you if she’s let out.”

My mom kisses me on the forehead and leaves.

10 minutes feel like an hour.

20 like 2.

30 like 3.

Finally, after 45 minutes, a nurse calls for myself and Emma’s mom. We both hurry into the room where Emma lies, finally awake. She looks so incredibly drained. She sees her mom and smiles duly. When we make eye contact, I see her eyes spark up and she smiles warmly. I call my mom and let Emma and her mom talk for a few. After about 15 minutes, her mom leaves back to work and leaves Emma and I alone. I jump up from my seat and rush to her bedside. I take her hand in mine and kiss it all over. She giggles softly and squeezes my hand in return.

“I was so worried.” I murmured as I leaned down to kiss her. As soon as our lips touch, I hear the door open. My mom comes walking in.

“I know Jack told me you are together, but I’m going to have to get used to this.” She laughs as she hands me a bag of McDonald’s. “There’s some stuff in there for Emma too if she’s hungry.”

“Thank you so much.” Emma pipes up. I hand her a hashbrown and breakfast sandwich and take mine out.

We eat in silence for a little, all watching the TV. My moms phone rings and she steps outside to take the call. Finally.

Immediately, I hop out of my chair and leap towards Emma. She laughs as she sees me approaching. I lie down next to her on the hospital bed and hold her hand. I kiss it softly and stay quiet, letting her talk first.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered.

“For what you goof?” I asked genuinely confused.

“Scaring you like this. I don’t like that you had to go through this with me. It isn’t fair to you.” Emma says softly.

“Stop it please. I’m just glad you are okay. I told you, I’m here for you no matter what happens. I’m just trying to figure out what did happen.” I rub my thumb lightly over her hand and trace the veins with my free hand.

“Sasha beat me up because she hadn’t in a while and wanted to.” Emma murmured. Something didn’t seem right about her answer.

“Promise?” I ask her. “Look me in the eye and tell me you promise that’s why.” I adjust myself so that our foreheads are touching lightly.

“No.” She whimpers while looking me in the eyes. Tears are starting to well up in her eyes.

“Please, talk to me.” I stroke the side of her face lightly.

“She’s mad because she likes you. She wanted me to hook you two up. Now that you and I are dating, she’s threatening to hurt my little brother if you and I don’t break up.” Emma begins to sob.

I wrap my arms around her and she curls into my chest shaking. I rub small circles on her back, trying to soothe her.

“Shh.” I kiss her as far away from her staples, but still on the top of her head softly. “We can make it through this. We need to tell the principal.”

Emma freezes in my arms. “What if she only gets a suspension? I don’t have any proof Jack.”

“You’re in the hospital for Christ’s sake. Isn’t that proof enough?” I growl.

“No it’s not. All she has to do is deny it and get her friends to say she was with them.” Emma murmurs. “Face it, it’s hopeless.”

Just then a nurse comes in the room. “Hi sweetie. We are ready to release you. Your mom had signed the release forms before she left. I suggest you go home for the day, and return to school tomorrow or the next day. Everything is clear and we will see you in a week to see if the staples are ready to be removed. Hang in there.” She smiles on her way out.

My mom walks in right as the nurse walks out. “What did she say?”

“Emma is ready to go now. They say she should stay home today though.” I explain.

“My parents are working though. How am I supposed to get home?” Emma asks me looking up at me with her big hazel eyes.

“I can take you back sweetie. Don’t worry about it.” Jack’s mom chimes in. “But Jack, you need to get back to classes. I can drop you off.”

“I can pick up your car while I’m there and drive it back to your house if you want me to.” I offer up to Emma. “I can take your brother home too.”

“You guys are amazing. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Emma smiles weakly.

I help fragile little Emma out of the hospital bed and hold her hand as we walk to my moms car. I hop in the backseat with Em and let her rest her head against my shoulder. I hold her hand tightly as we ride in silence. Emma tells my mom where to turn softly and before you know it, we are at her house. My mom lets me go in her house with her to help her into bed.

Emma lets me in the house and I walk to her kitchen, trying to find a cup. She points to the cabinet where they are. I grab one and get her some water. We walk to her room hand in hand. I look around and see endless posters and tapestries. This room is fucking awesome.

“Thanks for everything.” Em murmurs.

“Hush.” I smile as I pull her comforter back.

She slips under the covers and I tuck her in. She sticks her arms in the air, signaling she wants a hug. I chuckle and lean down to hug her. Immediately, she pulls down on me making me fall on top of her.

“Emma.” I groan. “What are you doing?”

I adjust myself so I am laying right on top of her. She looks up at me with wide eyes and slips her arms around my neck. I catch on, and lean down to kiss her. Instead of pulling away, she lets this kiss last a little longer. Emma’s tongue traces my bottom lip and immediately, I part them. Our tongues tangle and her breathing becomes heavy. Damn this girl, I have a boner and I know I’m gonna be left with blue balls. I part from her and she looks at me with lust filled eyes.

“Baby. There will be plenty of time to do that another day. My mom is waiting in the car.” I reminder her laughing a little.

Her eyes immediately grow wide. “Holy shit I forgot. Go back to your mom. I’ll text you.”

I crawl off of her and kiss her softly before leaving. I grab her car keys out of her backpack so I can bring the car back home. As I walk back through her house, I adjust my boner so that it isn’t noticeable. I run back to the car and my mom is on her phone thank god. We drive off to school and all I can think about was that kiss we just had and how I never want those to end. I miss her so much already.
