Chapter Thirty-Two: Stuck Like Glue
"Mom?" I asked, opening up the front door.
"Rebecca," she said in a scolding tone. She had a child on her hip, & she entered the house.
"Come on in," I said sarcastically as I closed the door.
"What is wrong with you!? I tried calling you so many times, but you never picked up!" She seethed.
"You know, I wanted to, but I didn't because I didn't want you to know where I was," I said, & I headed for the stairs, my mom following me. Jack & Jackie were still asleep, but I entered the room anyway.
"Why?" She asked, sounding hurt.
"It's a long story & I'd rather not talk about it. Get up you two!" I said, making Jack jump & hit his head on the headboard.
"Fuck," he groaned, & he rubbed the back of his head.
"I'm your mother. I deserve to know," she said.
"Yeah, I know. But something bad happened and it's still a sore subject," I said. I picked up Jackie & her eyes slowly opened.
"Mommy, I'm hungry," she complained as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. That's when Jack took her from me.
"I'll get her some food, baby," Jack said, & he kissed me softly before leaving the room.
"What?" My mom asked, gaping at me.
"What?" I asked.
"Since when-?"
"Since yesterday, alright? Uncle Chris brought her over at my request, & Jack & I are taking care of her. He's no longer doing it," I said, "who's this lovely lady?"
"This is Cailee. Your sister," she said. I nodded.
"Let's go downstairs. We're gonna have company here pretty soon," I said.
"Who's coming?" She asked.
"Rian, Cass, Zack, Stephanie, and Alex," I replied as we entered the kitchen.
"When is that boy gonna get a girl?" My mom asked.
"Who? Zack?" I asked. She nodded.
"Whenever he gets one," Jack replied as he watched Jackie eat a bowl of cereal.
"Jackie, how about you & I go get you cleaned up & changed for our guests?" I asked, & she nodded. She hopped down from her chair, & I grabbed her hand & led her up to the bathroom.
After her bath, I dressed her in a cute pink dress, & carried her downstairs. I set her down at the foot of the stairs, & she ran over to Rian who was standing & talking to my mom with Cassadee at his side.
"Hey Princess!" Rian exclaimed to a giggling Jackie as he picked her up.
"Hi Uncle Rian!" She said happily, & I grinned.
"Can you guys start on her room? Jack & I will be up in a few," I said, & Rian & Cass both headed up.
A few days later, Jackie's room was completely finished: it had furniture, a full closet, a made up bed, & new curtains.
She was finally able to sleep in it, & she was thrilled about that. Jack was too, because that meant he could actually hold me while we slept without Jackie being in between us.
"Have you heard from your father lately?" My mom asked one day as she was visiting with Cailee.
"Father my ass. He was never a father to me," I said while washing some dishes.
"Rebecca," she said hopelessly.
"What?" I asked, "He wasn't."
"Nevermind then," she said.
"How about Cailee and Jackie go & play?" I asked, taking my baby sister from my mom. I brought her out to the living room where Jack was supervising Jackie, & I set Cailee down next to Jackie.
"Watch them both? Make sure she doesn't get any of Jackie's toys in her mouth," I said, & Jack nodded. I pecked his lips & continued on to the kitchen where I returned to doing the dishes. My mom left about an hour after that, so it was just Jack, me, & Jackie.
"So, Jackie & I were talking the other day," Jack started, & I looked at him.
"Yeah?" I asked, & he nodded while a slight smile played at the corners of his lips.
"Yeah," Jack said softly.
"What did you talk about?" I asked Jack, who only motioned to Jackie. She smiled & stood up, & she walked over to me with a small box in her hands.
"Daddy said that he loves you so much, so he got you this to show you just how much," Jackie said, opening the box & handing it to Jack.
"It's true, Rebecca. Marry me?" He asked, & I sat there with my mouth open. Tears flooded my eyes, & I blinked them back. I closed my mouth & swallowed, eyes not leaving Jack's.
"I'd love to, Jack. Yes," I said, & I pulled him into me, kissing him with force & passion. Jack pulled away with a huge smile, & he slid the ring on my finger, closing the gap between us soon after.
No one was more perfect than Jack. No one.
