Don't Let Me Pass You By

Home Sweet Home.

Reagan came home from college that afternoon, and asked me to come to a bar with her and her new boyfriend, Jack. I accepted, knowing I haven't seen her in a few months. Plus, she'd been my best friend since pre-school. I was excited to meet the famous Barakat, since I heard all about him over the 4 months they'd been dating.

So, after the shift I'd been working at the bar I work at, I made my way over to the bar we always we always went as teens.

I walked in, and saw her blonde curls. I smiled to myself. Her head moved slightly, and I got a glimpse at her boyfriend.

He had blonde in his black hair. What a fucking dork. A cute dork though, definitely a catch. His large brown eyes reminded me of my brother's dog, and his goofy grin reminded me of a five year old.

After admiring his looks, I sauntered over to the table they sat at.

"Jessica!" She said, jumping up, throwing her thin arms around my neck.

I chuckled, patting her back. "Hey, Rae! I missed you!"

"I missed you more." Her cheeks must've been in pain after all of the smiling. I glanced down. Her boobs were probably suffocating in that shirt... poor things.

I took a peek at Jack, and gave a smaller smile to his direction. "Hi there," I said, crawling into the booth. Reagan sat next to Jack, pulling her beer bottle towards her.

"Hi! Reagan's been talking about you this whole time we've been waiting." He spoke, smile still lingering.

"How long have you been waiting?" I asked, slightly frowning. I put my purse to the side of me, up against the wall.

"Not long at all!" Reagan quickly said, taking a sip of her beer. "We actually just got here at 5. Jack's been here, but never has been to Lucky's!"

"Never been to Lucky's?" I scoffed, half laughing. "Please tell me you deflowered him."

Lucky's was a famous arcade. Everyone's been there, regardless of basically anything. If you've never been there, you were considered not to be a true Floridian.

"Don't worry," he laughed. "I lost my Lucky virginity."

"Well, I'm glad," I told him. "She kick your pretty little rockstar butt in air hockey, I sure hope?"

Jack nodded, eyes shining brightly. "She definitely kicked my pretty little rockstar butt."

I quickly ordered a Blue Moon on draft to the blonde waitress who took her time coming over. After she left, I continued talking. "Speaking of your pretty little rockstar butt, how is being in a band?"

"Well, it made me meet Reagan here, didn't it?" he admiringly looked at his smaller girlfriend. "It's amazing, though. I always knew I wanted to be in a band."

"How are the fans?" I asked, sipping on the drink the waitress brought over while Jack was talking.

Reagan giggled. "They're so cute."

Jack's arm moved, but I didn't see where it went. I figured it went to her thigh. "They're... perfect," he said.

"Remember how we obsessed over Justin Timberlake, Jess?" Reagan asked as I nodded. "That's how they are! I have to pee. This beer is going anywhere but my head."

I chortled. I looked at Jack as he watched Reagan walk to the restroom. I thought he was sort of cute, and grew a little bit jealous. Ever since high school, she was always the one to have arm candy. The way he looked at her, I began to wonder why I couldn't start a relationship like that. The guy I usually would date would last 6 days, and run off to be with his ex. I was a rebound for most.

"So what do you do, Jessica?" Jack asked me.

"I'm a bartender," I told him. "I didn't take the college road, depending on my looks to get me a modeling job. Clearly, I was a stupid 18 year old, and it did not turn out how I truly hoped."

"There's always time. It's never ever too late."

I blinked at him, before leaning to him. "That's coming from you. You're what, 23, 25? You've been in this band forever, you're doing what you love and making big money doing it. Me? I'm living in the city, working 5 to 1. You're a sexy little punk star that can get all of the girls you want with a sexual wink. It's too late for me,"

He stared into my eyes, mouth agape. "I d-didn't mean it like that.."

I took a large swig of my beer, feeling a little bit bad for snapping on him. I shrugged, not wanting to show my pity. I set down the glass cup, and looked at him with sad eyes.

His face grew a sloppy grin. "You think I'm sexy."

I rolled my eyes, smiling. "It might have slipped. Not that it matters, you're dating my best friend."

"You think I'm sexy." He repeated, grin still planted.

"Get it out of your mind," I said.

His eyes were still on me when Reagan slid next to him. My stomach was torn into small butterflies, making their way to my throat. I couldn't stop smiling at Jack, at myself. I thanked God that Reagan was trying to be funny, so I got the butterflies out.

The whole rest of the night, I felt guilty. I somehow managed to grow a crush on my best friend's boyfriend, and I had no idea how to help it. I didn't want to hurt her. Not in a million years.
