Maybe Next May

As I walked into first hour I realized that, One, there were no open seats that I could see; Two, everyone was either looking at me weird or glaring; And three, the teacher was now yelling at me because I was late on my first day. Awesome. I apologized and she pointed me to a seat. I quickly went and sat down, dropping my backpack and skate board next to it. I looked over and saw a friendly looking guy sitting next to me with a girl to his right. The girl looked up and saw me staring, but instead of glaring at me, she gave me a sweet smile. I couldn’t help but return it. The guy noticed the girl looking at me so he decided to also, giving me the same kind of smile the girl had.

“Hey, I’m Rian, this is my girlfriend Cassadee, but you can call her Cass.”

"Hey, I’m Jack,” I noticed his shirt. “You like Face-To-Face?” He chuckled.

“Totally. Hey, if you ever need help finding your way around, keep an eye out for either me or Cass. What’s your schedule?” I pulled it out of my pocket and handed it to him. He put it between him and Cassadee so they could both look at it.

“Looks like we have the next class together, then you have Cass for English, but you’re on your own for Music, sorry dude. You have a locker yet?” He asked as he eyed my bag and board. I shook my head.

“I’ll help you get one.” I gave him a smile and thanked him, luckily before the teacher yelled at us for talking and not paying attention. After the bell rang Rian hugged his girlfriend goodbye and took me back to the office.

“Hey, he needs a locker and a combo if that’s possible.” The blonde girl looked up, noticed me, then looked shocked.

“Oh! I’m so sorry sweetheart. I should have given that to you before.”

“It’s fine.” She looked around her drawer then gave me a small piece of paper.

Locker #112. Combination: 35, 12, 9.

“Thanks!”

“No problem honey!”

We went to my locker and I put my board in it but kept my backpack. We headed towards Math but were stopped. It was that kid from this morning with his friends.

“Look who we have, two nerds in one. It’s like a virgin combo.” The others laughed but blink boy and muscles didn't.

“Fuck off Heath, we don’t have time for your shit today.” Then Rian grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the class room.

“Who were they?”

“The football team, Heath is the leader of them.”

“Who were the two that weren't laughing?”

“Them? The smaller one’s name is Alex and the buff guy is Zack. They normally don’t join in when Heath picks on people, but they do stay near them.” I nodded, understanding a bit now.

“See that girl over there? Front table, two seats from the left, brown hair, small?” I nodded.
“That’s Lisa, Alex’s bitch of a girlfriend. Most popular girl in school and gets everything she wants. Sometimes when I see them together I fell like she is forcing Alex to date her.” I felt my heart drop, Alex wasn’t gay. I mean I don’t know why I thought he would be, I guess it was just a hope. Then again, I may still have a chance if she really is forcing him.

“That’s too bad, he seems nice.”

“I’m not sure, he may not pick on people but it isn't like he tries to stop it either. Plus he never talks, and when he does it’s either about football or some other stupid jock crap I can’t even stand listening to.” Rian rolled his eyes as the teacher walked in. The whole class hour I couldn’t stop thinking about Alex. Rian led me to Cass after Math so that she could walk me to English. He hugged her again and waved goodbye to me before walking away.

“So, how has your first day been so far?” I couldn't help but smile at her for attempting small talk.

“It’s been alright, already met... uh.... Hath? Het? Harth?” I couldn’t seem to remember his name. Cass stopped me in the hall, her eyes wide.

“Heath?”

“Yeah! That’s the one.”

“Oh sweety, what did he do to you?”

“Just knocked me over.” I shrugged.

“That isn't something to just shrug about! God, why is he so mean? I’m so sorry you had to deal with that on your first day.”

“It’s okay, from what I've already heard, I’m not the only one.”

She nodded sadly before we continued walking and got to our class. When we sat down I noticed that Zack kid sitting next to Heath. Heath was laughing obnoxiously loud at something while Zack seemed to be doodling in his note book, not even paying attention. I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. Heath looked at me and glared. Shit. I quickly turned around and faced the board as the teacher started instruction.

Lunch went by fast, I didn't eat anything, just drank water and answered questions that Rian and Cass threw at me. When they asked if I had a girlfriend I told them that I was gay. Rian was perfectly fine with it and Cass seemed really happy. I'm glad that out of everyone at this school, they were my first friends here. Then music class came along and I was alone. When I walked in the teacher pointed me to a seat. I looked towards where his finger pointed and couldn't help but freeze.

It was right next to Alex.
