Chapter Three
I sat with my face in my hands, both elbows on the desk, listening to the teacher's complete monotone of a voice call out the names of students. I was dangerously close to falling asleep agin and we were only two minutes into the school year.
"Smith, Heather."
"Here."
"Thomas, John."
"Here."
"Vegas, Jose."
I never heard "Thompson, Emma." Not that I had expected to. I had been ignored by everyone else all summer and the last few weeks of freshman year, why would the teachers be any different?
Suddenly, someone else burst into the room just as I had moments earlier, but of course everyone turned to look at him. Naturally, I did as well. He was panting desperately, trying to get some needed oxygen into his lungs. He impatiently shoved his sweaty, skunk-like hair out of his eyes. He was wearing black skinny jeans that fit him damn well, and he was wearing my Blink shirt! At least he had good music taste, unlike most of the dimwits here. I continued to stare at this lovely boy as Mr. Jones cleared his throat.
"Can I help you?"
The kid, who had been leaning against the wall trying to catch his breathe, quickly pushed himself out of his slump and stood up straight.
"Uh, yeah sir. I, uh, I'm new here?"
He phrased it like a question and was talking very quietly. However, the entire class was dead silent, so we could all hear him very clearly. His face flushed a light pink, which only made him cuter. He looked down quickly to avoid the eyes of the classroom.
"Well what's your name?" Mr. Jones asked impatiently.
"Oh, uh, um, I-I'm Ja-"
"Well spit it out boy!"
Prick.
"I-I-I'm Jack. J-Jack Bara-Barakat."
His stutter only worsened. I didn't blame him. Mr. Jones was a hard-ass, plus he was scary as fuck. I was glad this particular person ignored me.
"Well, J-Jack Bara-Barakat," Mr. Jones mocked, "You can sit there in the back. He pointed next to me, then proceeded to write stupid stuff on the whiteboard. He obviously did not say my name or anything, like I said, my existence is not acknowledged here.
The kid with the skunk hair and the cute blush made his way over to me, never looking up from his feet. He dropped his bag and then plopped down into the seat next to me, and proceeded to put his arms on the desk then his head on his arms. Within minutes, he was asleep.

I finally stumbled out of my last class before lunch and let out a sigh of relief. I stopped at my locker once again to get rid of my already exceptionally heavy bag.
I turned back around and realized I didn't have my money. I checked my pockets, desperately searching for my lunch money and slowly walking towards the cafeteria. I suddenly walked head on into someone running the opposite direction.
A Blink-182 loving, skunk-haired someone.
"Oh, jeez, Emma I am so sorry!" Jack exclaimed as I was knocked to the floor harshly and hit my head. I sat up slowly, rubbing my head.
"Emma, I'm so so sorry, please forgive me."
I froze, midway through getting myself off of the floor. Jack acknowledged me. He talked to me. How the hell did he even know my name?
"I'm so sorry," he said again, then scrambled off at the same fast pace.
He never once looked at me.
