Chapter 3

My hotel room was gorgeous, king size bed, even a couch. I loved it, I never got to travel anymore with Skylar. I quickly fell asleep last night, practically as soon as my head hit the pillow. Now I've been up for about 2 hours and now I'm getting dressed. Slipping on a black and dark blue button up, I step into the bathroom after pulling on my jeans. Applying simple make up, I take a glance at myself and decided I look decent. Smiling, I turn off the light in the bathroom and walk over to the bed. I sit down and put on my socks and shoes.

I stand up and my phone rings on the night stand. I lunge at it and slid my finger across the screen, answering the call. “”What up woman?” I said as I grab my wallet, Zack had called me earlier and told me he’d be there in about an hour and that was just at about an hour ago. “Nothing, the dork here wanted to talk to you.” She said and I’m assuming passed the phone to Skylar. “Hey, Paigey-Poo!” Sky yelled into the phone. A huge smile plastered itself across my face. “Hey, kiddo, what have you and Alana been doing since I left?” I sat down on the bed and look around the room while I talk to Skylar. “We went to the movies.” “Ohhh, fun. What did you see?” I asked as my phone buzzed and I looked at the screen, I got a message from Zack saying he was here.

I stood up and double checked to make sure I had everything. Then headed over towards the door, making sure to grab my key card. “Frozen!” She screamed into the phone making me chuckle and hold the phone from my face. “Again?! And without me?!” I said as I got into the elevator. “We can see it again when you get home! When are you coming home?” She said sadly into the phone. “Awwe, do you miss me? I should be home Friday, alright?” I said watching the numbers go from 2 to 1. I step out into the lobby and see Zack standing over by the doors. “Sky, I love you but Paigey-Poo has to go now.” “Why?” She asks. “I’m hanging out with Zack right now.” I walked over to him and reached where he was now.

“Oh, say Hi! Love you, bye bye!” I giggled and smiled at Zack standing in front of me. “Bye, little booger.” Then the line went dead and I hung up and slid the phone in my back pocket. “Hey.” Zack said holding out his arms. These guys like to hug, I mean having Sky has made the Anti-Hug/Anti-Cuddling person I am into someone who can handle it. I stepped into them and returned his hug. “Sky says Hi.” I said as he let go of me. “Is that your cousin?” I nodded. “Yeah, she knows about you guys and your band happens to be her favorite.” I said as we walked out of the hotel. “Oh really.” He said. I nodded again. “So what are we doing?” I asked.

He turned and smiled at me. “Well, you said that you do photography so I decided to pull out two cameras and figured we could go around and sightsee and take pictures.” My face lit up and I jumped up excitedly. “Oh my gosh, that sounds fantastic.” He smiled and took my hand before pulling me over to his car. He popped the trunk on his car and pulled out two cameras. “This is a gorgeous camera.” He smiled at me. I returned it and he closed the trunk before we started heading down the sidewalk.

“There’s a park not that far away.” Zack said after we had been walking for about 20 minutes. “That good, you know taking pictures of nature is what started my fascination with photography.” “And now you’ve made it into a career, congratulations.” I smiled but looked down at the camera in my hands. “Yeah, I like taking pics for the magazine, most of them are photo shoots.” I said pulling the camera in front of my face and snapping a picture of a little girl. “But the booth at the mall, that’s my favorite, to see all those happy families. To take a picture that will last forever of what they see as perfect or beautiful, being able to capture that for them it makes my heart happy as Skylar would say.” I pulled the camera away and looked at Zack.

He had this look on his face like he knew exactly what I was talking about. “It’s funny cause sometimes I take Sky in and have her do little photo shoots of her own, I’ve gotten some of my greatest pics of her from doing that.” He smiled back at me. After a few minutes of silence Zack broke it. “It’s a good time now if you wanna have dinner.” He said. “Sure.” We headed back from where we came from, back down the sidewalk and stopping off by a pizza place. We had a great meal and really our conversation surrounded around working out and photography, but he also found out that I ride the skate board. But eventually the day turned into night and the sun had already set, and now Zack was taking me back to my hotel.

We made it out front and I turned to him. “You know,” He turned and looked at me. “Today was perfect, the others are gonna have to try hard to beat this.” He smiled at me and I stepped forward and gave him a hug, he returned it. “Thanks, Zack.” “You’re welcome. I’ll see you soon.” He said before pulling away. “Good, I wouldn’t wanna leave before getting to say goodbye.” I headed up the steps to the doors and stopped short of stepping in. I turned and waved before walking into the building. My phone started to ring again as I walked into the elevator. I undid my french braid and pulled it to my ear. “Hello.” “Paigey-Poo, I-” The doors to the elevator opened back up. “Skylar you’re supposed to be in bed? What’s wrong?” I asked heading to my room. “I can’t sleep, I want you to read to me.”

“Skylar, ask Alana to do it-” “NO! I want you, I want to see you!” I swapped the phone to my other ear. “Alright, alright calm down. You know Paigey-Poo can’t do Facetime on her phone.” She started to cry. “Oh, Sky, honey.” I closed my eyes, I mean what am I supposed to do? I ran my hands thru my hair. Then I had an idea. “Sky, give Paigey-Poo 10 minutes, I’ll figure out something.” She sniffled and I’m assuming nodded. “Sky, can’t hear your head nod.” “O-Ok.” She said and I hung up. Zack called me on the hotel phone so I had no way to get a hold of him now so all I had was me stuck at a hotel. “Fuck.” I muttered, then I remembered that last Friday they called me on a phone, please be one of theirs. I prayed as I whipped out my phone and scrolled through the last calls I’ve made and received.

I pulled up the number and dialed. “Pick up, pick up, pick up.” I muttered as it went on ringing. “Hello?” I let out a sigh of relief before speaking. “Hey, oh my gosh, thank goodness you answered-” “Blink?” I nodded but remember what I just told Sky. “Y-yeah.” Suddenly I was all nervous. “What’s wrong?” He asked, actually sounding concerned. “Nothing- I mean yes something but like not something dier- wait not dier yes but needs to be attended to and-” “Just say it.” He said cutting me off. “Sky can’t sleep and stupid Facetime isn’t working and I was wondering do you have a computer I can use, like Skype. She’s crying and she wants me to read one book, and Alana wouldn’t have let her call or stay up this late if it wasn’t a problem.”

I finished in what seemed like one breath. I leaned against the wall and slid down. “Yeah, yeah. I have a computer, let me I guess come and get you so you can use it…” He said. My eyes were closed and my hand was being used to prop up my head. “I just grabbed my keys and I’m at my car right now, I’ll be there in a few.” He hung up and I dropped my phone to the floor. This may not seem like a big deal but Skylar has what some call abandonment issues and well me leaving unexpectedly like this trip was makes her extremely anxious. I sat in the quiet hall of the hotel for a few, just running my hand through my hair. Then the doors to the elevator opened, my head snapped up.

“Alex.” I said excitedly and attempted to stand up and run to give him a hug but tripped. He caught me though. “Hey, Blink. Come on let’s get you back to my house.” He said letting go, helping me stand. We walked back into the elevator and the doors shut. I let out some air and turned to Alex, he was staring at me, which made me blush. “Thank you so much. Skylar only gets like this every once in a while and every time she has me reads Oh the Place You’ll Go. Her favorite line is: ‘Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. there are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ball will make you the winning-est winner of all. Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be, with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.’”

I turned back to Alex and he just smiled as we left the elevator. “Yeah, I’ve read it a couple times.” We both laughed as we left the hotel. I pulled out my phone as it rang again. “Hello, Sky Alex is letting me use his computer have Alana pull up skype. Ok?” “Yeah, ok.” She said and hung up again. Alex and I got into his car and her took off down the road. “I’m sorry I called you, you were the only one that called me on my phone and-” “Blink, it’s fine.” He flashed me a smile and it only made me realize why so many girls are “In love” with Alex. I couldn’t help but blush. I looked out the window as we drove to Alex’s house. We made it into a neighborhood and pulled up to a nice house. “I promise I won’t stalk you.” I said as we got out of the car. He laughed and we walked inside. “My laptops on the table in the living room.” He said and shut the door. I ran over and pulled up skype, searching my name I clicked call and it made the call noise.

Eventually she popped up on screen. “Paigey-Poo!” She yelled. I giggled and looked at her. “Hey, booger.” “Where are you?” She asked. “Well, Paigey-Poo didn’t bring her computer so I had to borrow Alex’s-” “Alex Gaskerth!?” She yells. I laugh cause of how she says it. Alex came around the corner. “Someone screamed for me?” He chuckled and I scooted over on his couch letting him come into view. “I like Stella.” Sky said making Alex smile. I liked the kind of smile it was. “Well hello to you too.” I laughed. “Alright, let’s get this book on the road. It’s past your bedtime.” She whined.

“Skylar Anne, no whining. Now go get the book, and get ready to listen to the greatest story of all time.” She held the book in front of her. Alex sat next to me as I read the book. She flipped at the right times as I spoke the words. I’ve read it to her a thousand times so I literally can recite the book. She fell asleep relatively close to the end, and by the covers on the bed I could tell she was in my bed. “Alana, will you tuck her in?” I asked. Alana came on screen and moved my laptop and pulled the blanket over Sky. “Thanks.” “Welcome, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” “Sounds good.” “Peace out, bitch.” I laughed as the feed cut out and she disappeared. I turned to Alex. “So…” I started with. “Well I guess I can take you back to the hotel now.” He suggested.

I nodded and we both got up off the couch. “Yeah, ok.” I said and we headed out towards Alex’s car. We both slipped in and Alex started out of the driveway. “You know, Skylar was adorable and she really did look like you.” He said making me turn to face him. “Yeah, but she’s not mine. I mean I claim her because she’s awesome.” He laughed. “She seems like it.” The rest of the car ride was quiet, not awkward, just quiet. When we pulled up to the hotel I slid out of his car. “Well, thank you again so much Alex and-” “What does she call Will? Does she like him?” He asked. I was a little thrown off by his question. “Umm… She called him Will. What else was she supposed to call him? And really that’s no place for you.” “I don’t know why I asked that.” He said back. “That was weird…” I said shutting his door.

He hopped out of his car and ran to the other side. I walked down the walkway to the front of the hotel. “I’m sorry, if I offended you.” He shouted. I turned around and glared at him. “Quiet, you’ll wake people.” I said stepping down the steps toward him. “So, I’m sorry. These questions have gotten out of hand.” We were a couple feet from each other. “Yeah they did. Good night Alex.” I said and turned around. He reached around and grabbed my hand. “Again I’m sorry.” I looked at him. “I don’t need you to judge me. You never met Will, you don’t know him.” “I know, all I know is that he doesn’t treat your lifestyle, with Skylar, as he should. He doesn’t understand that you put yourself before others.” I stared at Alex and he said this. “Y-yeah-” Then my phone rang as if this moment couldn’t get any better.

I pulled my hand from his and took my phone out and pressed it to my ear. “Hello, what can
I help you with?!” I asked into the phone. ‘Hey, finally you answer. Where have you been I’ve missed you.’ Will said into the phone. I stepped back from Alex and turned. “Will, hey… I told you to stop calling until you understood that-” ‘That Skylar was your number one priority and that I’ll just have to live with that.’ I stood there flabbergasted and without words. “Paige, are you alright?” Alex asked making me turn around. “Yeah, I’m fine.” I said to Alex. ‘What? Who are you talking to?’ Will asked into my phone. “Alex, I’ll call you later Will.” I said before hanging up. “Wow, how inconvenient of him to call right now.” Alex said.

“Why? Why should it matter when he calls or doesn’t?” I asked angrily staring at Alex. “Cause when I first saw you I knew you were strong, stronger than the hold he obviously has on you.” “Shut up, Alex. You don’t know, you don’t know anything.” I said angrily marching up the steps and into the hotel.
