Time-Bomb

To Live and Let Go

"Mommy, I miss Daddy." Josie whined, gazing at me with her dark brown eyes that matched Alex's. I was over Bailey's. Alex knew of course, but he didn't know exactly who I was with.

"I know, baby." I mumbled, holding her close. I knew how she felt and I felt bad for putting her through the same things.

"Stay strong." Bailey told me, seeing the look on my face.

"I know, but he'll hate me when I do tell him or when he figures it out." I pointed out.

She didn't have a reply to that. I finally went home. He was cooking dinner. Alex, cooking dinner? When did he learn to cook? It smelled pretty good though. He hugged me and pecked me on the lips.

"How was Bailey's?" he asked, continuing to stir what he was making.

"Fine." I whispered.

The guys and Bailey came over and we all ate dinner, while Evan watched Josie. Afterwards, we just sat at the table, talking and drinking champagne. We all went to bed.

--

I was dreaming. We were back in high school and I was three months pregnant again and I was watching All Time Low practice. Alex was playing The Girl’s a Straight-Up Hustler. It almost seemed real...

I woke up and it was real. I saw Alex singing and playing that same song.

"I remembered our songs." he smiled.

"That's great." I smiled back.

He walked over to me and kissed me He got onto the bed and put his knees on either side of me. Our clothes came off and he was hovering over me at the point of no return.

"Are you sure?" he asked.

I didn't know what he'd do if I said no, so I just nodded. He went inside me, but he was slow and gentle, unlike the last time we'd had sex. He kissed me like he actually cared. I knew that was about to change.

Alex’s Perspective

I finally had sex with August. We hadn't had sex for a week, but tour had been going for two months before we had to leave. Maybe she had come out to see us. Or maybe I'd cheated on her. I couldn't remember. I snuggled into her gladly nonetheless. Her phone rang, my voice playing around the room. She groaned and grabbed it off the bedside table.

"Mm, hello?" she asked sleepily.

"What?" she asked a moment later, shooting up in bed.

"Okay, I'll be right there." she replied. She got up and got dressed, not saying a word to me.

"What's going on?" I asked.

"Bailey needs help moving her furniture." she replied.

"Can’t she get someone else?" I asked.

"No. She wants me. I don’t know.” I shrugged.

"Alright." I mumbled, kissing her head.

She dressed and left.

August’s Perspective

Josie was sick. Her fever was already at 103.7 and she’d been asking for me, so I knew I had to go. I’d provided a poor excuse to Alex as to why I had to leave. But hopefully, he wouldn’t be questioning it.

I still didn't know how I was going to tell Alex he had a daughter, a sick daughter, at that. I didn't know how I was going to tell him that everything I'd been telling him for the past week or so had been lies.

Once I did, he'd hate me. And I would return to being nothing more than a mark on his sheets. It made me nervous and sad just thinking about it. But I had to do it eventually. I'd have to break him. I knew he'd break me just as bad.

I burst into Bailey’s house. I found Josie upstairs in the guest bed.

“Mama.” she whispered weakly.

“I’m here.” I choked.

Alex’s Perspective

August left in such a hurry for such a trivial thing. I had a gut feeling that she lied to me, but I didn’t let on to that. I almost thought she was cheating on me. So I went to Bailey’s house after her. If she wasn’t there, I’d know she was lying to me.

I arrived and let myself in.

“August!” I yelled.

Bailey came down.

“Alex, what are you doing here?” she asked.

“August left in a hurry to move furniture with you, but since she doesn’t appear to be here, I’ll just assume she’s cheating on me.” I said angrily.

“No, she’s here. Follow me.” she said gravely. I furrowed my eyebrows. What was going on? Was she upstairs in Bailey’s guest room, banging “the other guy”? I was so mad, I could have spit fire.

When I got upstairs, August was knelt beside the guest bed. But instead of a guy in the bed, there was a little girl who looked exactly like me.

“What...the...hell.” I heard myself whisper.
