Alex opened the door and stepped aside, letting me in first. I thanked him and crossed the threshold. His house was becoming familiar to me now. Alex’s dog came running to my feet, his tail wagging excitedly as he nudged at my legs. I knelt down to him.

“Hello you” I pushed my fingers through the fur on his back with a smile.

“Now why don’t I get a hello like that” Alex said to me as he passed, chuckling. I stood and followed him into the lounge.

“Do you want anything before we leave? Food? Drink?”

“No I’m good” I replied with a smile.

“Okay, let’s get going” He said as put on the dogs’ leash.

We’d been walking for a while. Alex had the dog’s leash in his hand, the little fluff ball was happily trotting along just in front of us.

“So, seriously. How long are you staying here?” He asked me.

“I honestly don’t know, Vic never told me that part. Maybe I’ll go home after tour” I sighed.

“What? There’s no sense in that. You’ll be sat in an empty house for a month; you might as well go home before tour”

“I’m coming with you” I voice went up at the end of my sentence, making it sound more like a question. I turned my head slightly to assess his expression. His eyes were still on the street ahead, his forehead creased. He turned to meet my gaze, I hid the embarrassment I felt to be caught staring at him.

“I used to be Pierce The Veil’s guitar tech when things were… different” I hoped Alex didn’t notice my difficulty to finish the sentence.

“Oh okay, awesome” He said coolly, he nodded his head slowly and turned his face back to the street. I too looked forward, but I couldn’t help flicking my eyes back to his face. His cheek was lifted with a smile he was trying to conceal. I dropped my eyes to the floor, a small smile playing on my lips. It was nice to for someone to want me around, not just feel like they needed to keep an eye on me. Alex interrupted my thoughts.

“So you play guitar then? You kept that quiet” His smile was still in place, flashing me his white teeth. I shrugged it off.

“Not well at all” People always thought I was just being modest, but it was the honest truth. I could play a few chords but that was it.

“You’re obviously doing something right” I shook my head slowly.

“That’s what you would think, but you’ll see”

“I guess I will” He grinned down at me. The thought of tour didn’t fill me with joy; I was absolutely terrified by it. All of those people and I would have nowhere to run and be alone for a while, no escape. It was a world away from my isolated life at home. I was going to have to hold it together all day, every day.

“You’ll soon get sick of me y’know”

“What?”

“On tour, you’ll be sick of the sight of me” He just chuckled at me.

“Don’t be stupid Phoebs” His use of my shortened name sent a small thrill through me. I could feel his eyes on my face, but I kept my stare on the end of the road. I was such a coward. Luckily, his phone began to ring from his pocket, drawing his attention away from me. I turned to watch him pull it out of his pocket. His face lit up when he saw the name flashing on the screen. He pressed it to his ear.

“Sam!” He chimed into the phone with a grin.

“How the hell are you?” He waited for whoever was on the other end to answer.

“I’m great. It’s great to hear your voice, it’s been so long!” The grin had not left his face. I felt my smile disappear. Good to hear who’s voice? It didn’t take a genius to work out it was a girl.

“No way! The boys kept that quiet, awesome! We’ll have to hang”

“No, just out walking with a friend” He turned to flash a smile at me. I turned my face away, unsure on what my expression should be.

“…so I better go Sam” His voice was quieter, less enthusiastic.

“Yeah, see you on tour. Bye” So whoever this girl was, not that I was going to ask, she was going to be on tour too. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. I watched from the corner of my eye as Alex pushed his phone back into his pocket. Before I could stop myself a harsh shiver ran through me and I shook, the sun was almost down and the cold was creeping in. I was only in a t-shirt. To my dismay he noticed and began to shrug out of his jacket, passing the dogs leach between his hands.

“Alex you’ll get cold” he completely ignored me and swung it round my shoulders. I looked up at him. He smiled at me hesitantly, which I returned.

“Thank you” I said quietly but warmly. I swung my arm round his waist and pulled him into a side hug. Just as I was about to drop it, Alex placed his arm over my shoulder and pulled me into his chest.
