Let the Floods Cross

s e v e n

Liezel woke up, instinctively reaching over to the other side of the bed. She turned around in alarm when she found the side of the bed empty. Gasping, she realized that Alex did not return home last night. After their argument, she left him in the loft and did not return until after her tennis practice was over. He wasn’t home when she got back, but she only assumed that he was out to let out some steam.

Apparently, that was not the case.

“God damn it, Alex.” Liezel groaned as she got up from the bed.

She walked over to her closet and pulled out a pair of shorts from a drawer. After putting it on over her underwear, she reached for her phone on the night stand and dialed Alex’s number. She didn’t press the call button yet, pondering in hesitation. She didn’t know if she should call him right now.

He might not even want to talk to her since she really pissed him off last night. Groaning again in frustration she canceled the call and dove for her bed face down. She did not know how to handle this situation. Usually, their arguments would end with his apologies or hers. This time, she did not know if she should apologize for running out on him. She wanted to in order to make up with him but if she actually did, he wouldn’t deserve it. He is supposed to understand how much effort and time she needs to take out to perfect the art of her game.

In the end, she decided to call him. If she does not apologize to him, he might do something irrational and cause problems for later on. She knew that Alex would usually act radically in the midst of their fights. If she let him wallow in his anger towards her for long, he might end up in Ace’s examination room at the precinct like Jack had.

When she called him, he did not reply. His phone is off. Alex is possibly ignoring her, and she understands that it has to be done in order to prove a point. He wants to prove to her that he is angry with her.

Shaking her head in exhaustion, she pulled a crewneck top from Alex’s side of the closet and covered her nearly bare body with its warmth. She is going to take matters into her own hands. If Alex is going to avoid her, she will take the initiative to go and find him. She will apologize to him even if she believes that he is the one at fault during this conflict.

After getting cleaned up and dressed, Liezel left the loft. She has an idea of where Alex might be.

“Beckett?”

Liezel blinked at the Lockheart model several times in distraught. She tilted her head slightly in slight confusion, unsure of why Dale would be at Jack’s place at this time in the morning. Of course she is here because they are dating, but knowing Jack, if he spent the night with Dale, they would usually be at her place. Jack mentioned it to her once.

“Uh, I am here to—is Alex here?” She rubbed the back of her head slightly.

The brunette model shook her head, glancing behind her into the house.

“Er, he’s not here, unless Jack somehow smuggled him inside without my knowledge.” Dale laughed slightly as she said this.

The tennis player nodded, biting her lips. She closed her eyes for a few seconds to think clearly before opening them back again. Dale shot her a look, a worried one.

“Are you okay?”

“Can I come in?” Liezel asked.

“Yeah sure, should I get Jack to wake up?”

“That’d be cool!”

Dale invited her into the house and ran off into the master bedroom. Left alone in the living room, Liezel walked over to the couch and sat down on it. She feels so stressed out that just merely sitting on the sofa is not enough for her. With her arms clung over the top of the back cushion, she got comfortable on the couch.

As she placed her feet on the other end of the couch, Jack walked into the living room groggily. He groaned at the sight of the tennis player and tapped on the top of her head several times. She glanced up at him, obviously tired from everything that went on last night.

“I thought you would be at the precinct or the tennis court at this time, or are you just exempt from your responsibilities?” He kicked at her feet.

Liezel moved her feet unwillingly and watched as he replaced their position. He glanced at her lazily, as if he is going to fall asleep on her.

“I had a fight with Alex last night.” She stated bluntly.

Jack laughed as a response, slowly shaking his head.

“So you are here for revenge sex or what?” Jack joked, winking at her as he said this.

The tennis player rolled her eyes, kicking him with her fallen foot.

“No, I’m here to talk.”

“What do you want to talk about?”

“I need your advice, and because I don’t know what else to do. I’m worried about him. He ran off and I thought he would be with you but… what if he ends up at a police station or something?” Liezel rambled on, clearly worried as she thought of all the possibilities.

Jack chuckled as a response, which angered her. He is not taking this as seriously as she is. She is used to Jack not taking things seriously, but now is not a good time to be negligent. She needs to make sure Alex is fine.

“JACK!” She protested.

“Look, Alex is probably at Rian and Zack’s place. I guess he just stopped coming here after one of his fights with you because he is getting too damn predictable with this. He knows you will look for him here every time you are ready to apologize to him.” Jack reasoned as he grabbed a cushion beside him.

Closing his eyes, he positioned his head comfortably on the cushion.

“It means I’ve probably pissed him off big time.” Liezel murmured to herself.

Jack let out a yawn as Dale reappeared from the bedroom. She briefly glanced at the two of them on the couch before walking over to the kitchen. Liezel acknowledged her but did not say anything since she is still suspicious of Dale and her intentions to be with Jack.

“So what exactly did you two fight about anyways?” Jack asked.

“I blew off one of our dates for a night session at the court.”

The skunk-haired guitarist snorted right after she said this, shaking his head hysterically as he did so. Liezel glanced at him, clearly offended at how little regard he is holding this topic. It is very serious and important for her to fix this with Alex.

“Is that the real reason or are you just bullshitting me?”

“That is exactly what happened, I shit you not!”

Jack reopened his eyes and yawned again. He clearly should not be awake right now and that is very apparent on his face. Liezel felt a bit bad for waking him up to deal with her domestic problems involving her boyfriend, but Jack needs to fall into a better habit of waking up before noon.

“Alex is such a needy little bitch.” Jack laughed.

“Or maybe he was planning to do something important last night.” Dale approached them from the kitchen.

Both Jack and Liezel turned to the model and watched as she walked closer to the couch. She is holding up a small piece of paper that Liezel cannot see clearly from the distance. The pair waited until Dale is close enough to hand the receipt over to Jack. The guitarist stared at the piece of paper with an eyebrow raised.

He has no idea what is going on.

“This is not mine; I did not spend over one thousand dollar on platinum sup dia, whatever that shit means.”

Liezel’s eyes widened at a realization.

“It’s a receipt for a platinum supreme diamond ring, Jack.” Dale said impatiently.

Jack blinked at his girlfriend several times.

“So you bought a diamond ring in hopes that I will propose to you?”

The model sighed loudly in annoyance.

“No, Jack. It must have been Alex. He probably dropped the receipt in the kitchen while he ate dinner here last weekend.”

Jack’s jaws dropped as he reached a realization too. He shared a look of shock with his girlfriend, both gaping at each other.

“So this means that Alex --”

“—Was planning to propose to--”

“Me.” Liezel finished regrettably.

“Do you want to do a second take for that?” The producer asked from outside of the recording box.

Alex pulled his headphones off, shaking his head at the producer. He had been working at this new song all morning and finally decided to finish this song today. The band had already finished their part of the song, leaving Alex to make his final touch to the tune. He had been stuck because he felt like what he wrote did not do the song justice. It took him a while, but he woke up this morning with a realization. He found some type of inspiration, while he was in Kaya’s bed, and that motivated him to call the producer up and finish this song.

After he got to the studio, he finished up the song by incorporating everything he wanted to for it. It took him several hours, but when he finally got it, he got inside the box and made a single recording for it.

He will need to return into the box to tweak it into perfection but he is so tired that he cannot handle it. At least the first vocal recording is completed, acting as a guide for him to take this song further into the process. As of right now, he needed the rest.

Just as he got out of the box, the studio door is thrown open. The singer jumped back in surprise and shock, laughing as he identified the source of entrance. Jack walked in with a different look on his face, however.

“Dude, has the world ended or did you actually just get out of bed and walk into the studio before noon?” Alex continued his teasing, chuckling as he slapped Jack’s upper arms.

Jack shook his head.

“You were going to propose to her?” Jack questioned, slapping a small paper against his chest.

Alex grabbed at the material forced upon him and took a good look at it. His heart dropped at the realization that the paper is merely a receipt for an engagement ring he bought last weekend. He must have dropped it by accident when he was over at Jack’s house; that day, he went to Jack’s place right after he bought the ring.

“I thought about it.”

“Yeah, thought about it enough to actually buy the ring; why didn’t you tell me? I could’ve helped you! You have no idea how many good ideas I would’ve came up with!”

Alex rolled his eyes.

“I tossed it.”

Jack tilted his head with his eyebrows furrowed.

“Tossed what?”

“The ring.”

The guitarist laughed, shaking his head in disbelief.

“You dumped a ring you spent over one thousand dollars for just because she blew you off? You, my friend, never cease to entertain me with your logic.”

Alex smiled at his best friend because he never fails to bring humor into his life. Even in his crappiest mood, he seems to have a reason to smile or even laugh because of Jack. Interacting with Jack did help Alex take his mind off of all the anger and the deep-felt guilt.

“Yep, pretty much. I was on the fence about that idea anyways. It is something I’ve been afraid to do—I have been trying to convince myself not to do it, but I managed to get myself to do it because I fear I will never have the guts to do it in the future.”

“Come on, Beckett is a hot piece of ass, you better put a ring on it; maybe it’ll reign her back from her wildness.”

“Yeah, but the future scares me. I don’t want her to think that I’m thinking about the future with her. It’s like if she knows that I’m too serious about this, it’ll drive her away.”

Alex did not know what to do with his life. He has been unfaithful to Liezel and at the same time, he wants some sort of stability in his life—even if he is a rock star. He hoped that being engaged to Liezel would keep her closer to him as well as prevent him from performing any more acts of infidelity.

“Alex, I want to talk to you about something.” Jack whispered as he cautiously looked behind him at the producer.

The producer is too busy mixing at the soundboard to pay any mind to the two. Jack beckoned Alex outside of the studio. Alex sighed but followed anyways, since it might be important.

If Jack did not want anyone to overhear this conversation then it must be serious.

“I know what you’ve been doing and I have for a while.” Jack whispered.

Alex mentally hoped that Jack is talking about what he thinking. If Jack knew, then he will have someone to talk to about this issue, even if Jack is nearly never serious. Alex would not be swallowed in this guilt all on his own.

“What do you mean by that?”

“You’ve been banging the Lockheart Barbie.”

Alex raised an eyebrow, surprised that Jack even reached that conclusion. He and Kaya had been extremely discreet about what they were doing. Apparently, they were not discreet enough.

“And you know that because…?”

“Because my girlfriend is actually a female James Bond.”

“Wait, so Dale figured us out? Did she say how?” Alex asked curiously.

Jack chuckled.

“Kaya leaves boxes of condoms lying around in her flat, and besides, she sees your car outside of Kaya’s loft all the time. Eventually, she figured out that it wasn’t just for a friendly hangout.”

“So you are not going to judge me?” Alex asked.

“Kaya’s pretty hot, I have to applaud you for that man! But, yes, I actually do care about Beckett, so rethink your priorities.”

Alex nodded.

“And Alex, if you need someone to talk to about this whole mess, you know I’m here right?”

“Yeah, Jack, I know I can always count on you. Thanks, bro!”

“Hey, anything for someone who stayed in a precinct cell with me all night.” Jack beamed at him.

The brunette laughed as he slapped his friend’s shoulder.

“Alright, let’s get in the studio and see what you’ve created in your post-sex morning.” Jack gestured toward the entrance to the studio entrance.

They both agreed and started towards the studio. Just as Jack is about to open the glass door, he stopped abruptly. Alex followed suit quickly and watched as his friend turned around to look at him with a funny look on his face.

“By the way, I’m just wondering how you even scored someone as sexy as Kaya Lockheart.”

Rolling his eyes, Alex shoved his friend inside the studio.
