chapter 4

After what had happened yesterday I had tried my best to stay away from Paige as best I could. Which meant staying in the guest room. It wasn’t until I had watched 2 and a half movies that I completely shut off the T.V. letting my brain think for a minute. I heard a movie playing in the distance and singing. I stood up from the bed and headed over to the door. “Say goodbye. Say goodbye. To the pain of the past, We don't have to feel it anymore.. Love is an open door. Love is an open door. Life can be so much more.” I could hear Paige sing with the movie. I decided it was time and reached for the knob of the door.

I turned it slightly and slowly pushed the door open. I looked around and assumed she was in the living room. It was about 11:30 and I’ve been up since like 8 so. I slowly step out and head down the hall where I see Paige sitting on the couch with some guy. “Hey, man.” The kid said. It was the guy from the World of Coke yesterday. “Hey...Kyle.” I said. Paige looked away from the T.V. “Wanna watch the movie with us or do you have packing to do?” Paige asked turning back to the T.V. “Yeah, I’ll just leave you two to do your ‘Lovebird’ thing.” I said scoffing and turning around.

I shouldn’t be jealous but I am. I quickly snapped back around heading to the front door. “I’m actually gonna go talk to Grace.” I said. I heard shuffling then saw Paige head over to me. “I thought you said you weren’t dating?” She asked crossing her arms. “Well, that is why I came down here isn’t it, to get my girlfriend back.” I said shortly opening the door. She squinted her eyes at me and walked back over to the couch, plopping down next to KYLE.

I left her house and headed down the sidewalk towards Grace’s mother’s. I saw her in the yard and ran up. “Hey Grace.” I said shoving my hands in my pockets. “Oh look, it’s Jack my boyfriend!” She squealed running over to me. Oh god, I made a mistake. I embraced her in a hug, and innocent hug on my part. She pulled away and pushed her gloss covered lips against mine. “We’re dating?” I asked trying to gain some sort of clarification. “Yeah, well Alex called me and told me all what you thought and I decided to take you back.” She smiled.

“What did Alex say?” I asked, just being curious. “He said that you really did love me you just have a funny way of showing it and that I should take you back cause you miss me and need me.” She said going back in for another kiss. I blocked her with my hand. “But he was wrong.” She raised an eyebrow at me. “He is?!” She backed away placing her hands on her hips. “Then what exactly is going on here?!” She asked. I rolled my eyes.

“God, Grace. Not everything is about you. I know you cheated on me, I knew it was with your ‘Friend’, Gavin. And I thought I missed you but I realized I was so used to your constant nagging, back stabbing, and bitching that I mistook freedom for missing you.” Her mouth dropped and I laughed getting ready to continue. “So yeah, when you said we were no longer dating yesterday I was happy.” I finished. “Grace? What’s going on here?” Her brother asked walking up behind us. I remember that kid, he was one of the ones standing around Paige outside the bathrooms.

“Greg, it’s fine. I was just letting Jack speak his mind for once.” She said turning to him. “You’re the guy that saved Punching bag, aren’t you?” He asked walking closer. I stepped forward and cupped my hand around my ear. “Excuse me!? What was that, did you just call Paige a punching bag?” I asked. “Well, yeah. Even I know she’s an undesirable in the neighborhood.” Grace said standing next to her brother. Then he opened his mouth too. “The only kid that talks to her is Kyle and he’s a freak too.” He said. “They’re good people, why are you so harsh?” I asked throwing my hands into the air. “Wait!?” Grace said. “You were talking to Paige...and Kyle?” “Yeah,-” “Good thing we’re over.” She said turning around. I scoffed. “Good thing I called it off then.”

I turned around and walked down the sidewalk and towards Paige’s house. That’s when I noticed her standing outside. “Thank you for standing up for me, Jack.” She said softly. “You stopped calling me Blink, why?” I asked getting closer she back away a little. “Cause the last person who had a nickname was my brother and he left me too.” She said and that’s when I noticed she was crying. I stepped closer and pulled face to look up to mine. “Why are you crying?” I asked.

She sniffled. “Kyle got a little too handsy and we sort of fought but I won and he left.” She let out a shaky, breath filled laugh. “I thought he was my friend but all people I think like me leave me.” She said letting a few tears roll. “Paige, I’m so-” She backed away. “Jack, I know you’re sorry but I’m tired of feeling guilty when it’s not my fault. I’m just being me yet no one seems to like me.” She turned back and walked towards her front door.

God, it's so stupid to think anyone would leave Paige like that. Or would treat her like that, would be someone considered her friend then up and become a douche bag and leave her... oh wait, that's exactly what I’m doing. Fuck. I ran inside the house after her. "Paige, I'm so sorry." I started as she headed towards her room. "I don't think I can wait any longer." She said softly looking down at the carpet of her room with her arms crossed.

"Wait longer for what?" I ask standing behind her. She turned around looking at me. "It's not fair that I get to live and waste oxygen when people are out there who deserve it more than me." She played with something in her hands but kept eye contact with me. "I'm an organ donor so if I call them in enough time they'll save my organs but I'll be gone by then." She pulled apart the bottle from the top in her hands. "Woah, slow the fuck down. You're not dying today. Especially not like this and not for this reason." I said sternly grabbing the bottle she didn't fight it, she just looked disappointed.

“Why.” She asked plainly no emotion. “Cause Paige, I can’t let you end your life just because of some dumb people and their choices.” I shouted. She just looked at the ground crossing her arms over her chest again. “Why do you care, you’re leaving.” My mouth opened to say something but I had nothing to say, what even could I say. She continuously stared at the ground until her eyes looked up at mine. And as selfish as it’s gonna seem I felt like I was the only one who could help her and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.

“I care because I can help you and I will. You’re coming back to Baltimore with me.” Her eyes went wide. “Wait what? Say that again.” “You are coming back to Baltimore with me.” I said completely clear. “You don’t know anything about me though, are you just gonna let a stranger live in your house?” She asked cocking her head to the side, almost studying my face for an ulterior motive. “So, I’ll have all the time in the world. And as said before your parents won't care and all you have in this neighborhood are these little dicks who run around and torment you.” I said taking a step forward taking her hands in my own, hers were cold but mine are always warm. “Get your stuff ready to go, we can drive up. Bring anything you want you’ll have your own bedroom and everything.”

She looked so confused as to what she really wanted and whether this was a good idea. “Paige,” She looked at me and stared at me face. “No one I’m pretty sure has ever offered you this but I will. I promise to always be there and to always protect you, ok?” I asked she stared not breaking our eye contact until a tear rolled down her cheek and she let go of my hands and stepped back placing her hands at her sides. “Are you sure you can take on a hassle like this, I’m not perfect like I’m sure Grace is.” “Forget Grace, I gave this offer to you not her. So please come with me.”

She went across her room to her closet. She grabbed down suitcases and started grabbing clothes and such. I smiled cause I won, probably the only argument I’ll ever win with her. I walked over and helped stuff articles of clothing into the bag. “Go over to the drawers and pull out all the stuff.” She said pointing her to her dresser. I walked over and opened the bottom one pulling out everything followed by the next drawer that followed. I did that until I got to the top one. I slid open the drawer and looked inside. All it was was bras and underwear. I stood there for a minute, then Paige walked over and grabbed the pile of undergarments.

“Come on Blink, I know you’ve seen womens underwear before.” She said giving me a smile and a wink before placing them in the bag. I turned to her. “Yeah, yeah I have.” I said sitting on the end of her bed. “Do you have any nice clothes with you?” She asked turning to me. “Yeah, why?” “Cause, my parents are in town for one of my dad’s fancy formal dinners and he’d be happy to know I’m leaving.” She said getting a little smirk in her voice. I leaned back on her bed. “So what, will I be accompanying you as a date.” I asked. She nodded. “Of course.” She smiled at me.

“So what color should I be wearing?” I asked heading to the doorway. “I don’t care, wear what you want.” She said smiling at me. Grace would have never let me pick what I want, always had everything predetermined. I smiled back and left her room. Walking into the guest room I picked through my duffel and found a black button up. I slipped off my shirt and pants and then pulled on some nice black skinny jeans and the did my shirt. I stepped out and went back to Paige’s room. “Do you have a tie or bow tie or something?” I asked stepping in.

“Nah you don’t have to wear them, don’t worry about how fancy you’ll look or anything cause you look fantastic.” She said. I stared at her in this beautiful dress. I was at a loss for words, she was stunning. “Paige, you look-” “Hot, I know. My mother picked out this dress. She said it would make me look skinny.” “You look beautiful.” I said leaning against the door frame. “Thanks, now let’s go make my parents hate me even more.” She said taking my hand and pulling me by the hand to the living room. “Wait, that’s confusing.” I said to her.

We walked out to her garage. “No, it’s not.” She opened the door and stepped over to the car. “They’re giving me money today.” She said turning to me tears breaking at the brims of her eyes. “Either for college, out of the country of course, or just to run away. They want me to c-change my name too. T-they don’t want anything to do with m-me.” She said getting into the driver side. I followed suit. “They can’t really hate you cna they?” I asked even though I knew it was a loaded question.

“They left me in North Carolina when I was 11, I called my grandparents and they kept me for a little while until my dad found out that they did and he had charges pressed on them and now I’m not allowed to see them or anything. They left me in another state at a rest stop.” She turned to me. “I don’t know why I trust you, Blink but I do. Maybe it’s because you’re the only one who has ever tried to help me out in anyway. Thank you.” I smiled at her. “Let’s go crash a party then.”
