Chapter 1

“Grace! Don’t leave.” I grabbed her wrist as she headed towards the door with her bags in tow. “Jack, I can’t stay here and wait for you every time you leave. I refuse to be the anchor that you need.” She pulled out of my grip and left the house. I ran after her outside. “Grace-” “No Jack. I’m done with your bullshit. You don’t love me-” “”Grace, I do. Really I do!” I shouted as she threw her bag into her car. She turned around to face me. “Prove it, say it. Say you love me, Jack Barakat, say you love me.” She said staring me down. I wasn’t ready, I’m not ready to tell her that. I don’t know how much I like her.

She scoffed and got into her car. “Good bye, Jack.” “Grace, don’t leave. Where will you go?” I asked trying to convince her to stay. She started her car and turned to me. “My mother’s. I’m going home, I’m gonna start fresh and live my life, a life without you.” She said pulling out of the driveway and down the road. I placed my hands atop my head and yelled as her car sped out of the neighborhood. I stormed back into my house, picked up my phone and called Cass.

Cass: Hello, Jack. What can I do for you?
Me: Grace left to go to her mom’s, do you know where that is?
Cass: Yeah, down in Georgia. Woodstock. Why did she leave?
Me: Cause I wasn’t giving her the time she needed or something. But I’m gonna get her back, yeah, I’m gonna get her back.
Cass: Jack don’t leave now. Give her time, she’ll need it if I know Grace.
Me: But Cass-
Cass: Jack, you listen to me. You’ll make this worse if you go now, I’ll let you know when you can leave.
Me: Alright, alright.

I hung up and paced around my living room. This was stupid. Why would she make me choose between my job, the thing they guys and I have been working so hard for, and her. We’ve been dating almost a year. You would think she would understand, she infuriates me. But that was a few days ago and here I am moping around thinking about what’s gonna happen when I get to her house. How would I get her back. I didn’t fight so hard for her to move up with me for her to throw it all away like it was nothing, like I was nothing.

Today’s Friday and Cass gave me the go to fly down to where Grace was staying at her mom’s. I walked off the plane and looked around for where I would pick up my bag. “How the fuck do you find anything in this place.” I said under my breath. “Sir, what are you looking for?” A woman asked me. “I’m looking for where I find my bag.” I said semi shortly to the woman. “It’s gonna be over there.” She said with a smile on her face. I nodded and ran off towards the conveyor belt. I saw my bag and picked it up.

Throwing it over my shoulder I ran to the front of the of the airport and looked around for a cab. I spotted one and ran towards it. “Excuse me.” I said to the man. “Yeah, hope in.” I let out a breath and hopped in the back of the cab. I gave him the address and we took off just like that. We drove past various places that I was not paying attention to. I just kept playing over what I was gonna say when I saw Grace again. “Hey, guy. We’re here.” The man said to me. I came out of my day dream and handed the guy some cash. “Keep the rest.” I hopped out of the cab and looked at the house ahead and sure enough her car was sitting out front.

I marched up the stairs and dropped my bag to the floor. I looked at the door and the doorbell and finally decided to push the button. It took a minute but the door swung open. “Hello, how may I help you?” I short woman with black curly hair asked. “Umm… well, you must be Grace’s mom.” She raised her eyebrows at me. “Yes, yes I am. What can I help you with?” “Hi, I’m Jack. Can I please speak to Grace.” She shook her head. “Oh Jack, Grace told me all about you, and no she doesn’t wanna see you.”

“Please, mam. I came all the way dow-” “Mom, who is it?” I saw her from behind the door. “Jack?” “Hey, Grace.” I said smiling. “Jack, are you fucking kidding me? You came all the way down here, you can’t just let me go can you?” “But I-” “No, no you don’t now go away.” The door was shut in my face. I stood there for a minute, soaking in what just happened. I knocked again. “Go away!” She yelled. “No, not until you talk to me, not yell at me!” I said back. She didn’t say anything else.

After a few, what else was I supposed to do. I walked down the stairs and looked across the street. I made it halfway down the driveway when I realized, I’m not leaving. I sat down and laid back on the concrete. I’ll wait here till she’s ready. I laid down with my ankles crossed and my hands behind my head. I laid there for about an hour until I heard a skateboard going down the street. I didn’t move though. “Hey.” I didn’t move, assuming whomever it was wasn’t talking to me.

“Hey, you. Earth to the man in the middle of a driveway.” I sat up on my elbows. I girl in maroon sweater, short cut offs, dark vans and a black t-shirt. I’m sure the t-shirt was a reference to some show. “Hello.” She said again waving her hands. She popped the board up and gripped it under her arm. “Yeah, what do you want?” I asked, I was being bitter. She walked over and sat next to me. “Don’t be a dick, I’m trying to be polite.” She said as I sat up completely next to her.

“That’s what I do when people who aren’t nice treat people wrong and are being a complete bitch to those who don’t deserve it.” “She’s not a bitch.” I said defensively. “Ok,” She looked at me. “Then why are you out here and not in there.” She added pointing to the house behind us. “Cause…” “Cause she thinks you messed up when you’re for certain you did nothing wrong.” She said leaning over. “And the way I see it she’s over reacting and you don’t even know why she’s mad.”

She leaned back and smiled at me. “What are you doing out here, it’s late.” She scoffed and looked over at me. “And who are you, my father? It’s late, what are you doing out here?” She asked spinning my question back on me. “I’m waiting for my girlfriend to take me back.” I said as she stood up. “Well, she’s not gonna do it tonight.” I stared at her. She was tall, blonde and had a lip ring- two actually, and her hair was in crazy waves. “Come on.” She started down the driveway.

“Wait, what?” I asked standing up. “I said come on.” I just stood there. She rolled her eyes and took a few steps back towards me, she was way taller than Grace. “You have no where to stay, wanna know how I know?” I nodded. “You still have your bag and you have the crazy look about you that says ‘I came down here on a whim.’” She took my bag and her board. She threw my duffel bag over her shoulder and jumped on her skateboard. I ran down and met her at the bottom.

“Your parents are just gonna let you have a man you’ve never met before stay the night?” I asked in disbelief. “Well-” “She’s the neighborhood whore. She gets around and nobody says a thing!” Some kid shouted from across the street on the other sidewalk. “Shut the fuck up, keith!” She yelled. He threw something and when it hit her it exploded, it was a water balloon. She seemed unphased just dropped my bag, gently and ran across the street.

The kid tried to run but she caught him by the collar of his shirt, jerking him back he fell to the ground. “Keith, I will kick your ass. Get off my street.” She said letting the kid get up. He ran off and she walked back over. Her hair, shirt and sweater were soaked. “Sorry about that. No they won’t mind, they’re never home anymore. I’m basically an only child and they leave on business trips all the time.” She picked my bag up and threw it over her shoulder.

“Here,” I said taking my bag. “I’ll take that. Which house is yours?” I asked. She pointed over to a house with a huge driveway. “That one.” We walked down the street in silence. “So,” I started. She looked over at me. “Is that-” “Keith is my bully and I stick up for myself occasionally. Depending on whether he’s alone or not.” She said nonchalantly. “How many are there?” I asked just being curious. “A couple, eight, ten people at most.” “Ten people?!” I asked. She looked at me. “Yeah, but I’m a tough person. I can handle it.”

We headed up her driveway. “Why so young, that’s not fair.” “No, no it’s not but I’ve dealt with school bullies since 6th grade.” “School bullies?” She unlocked the door and we stepped in. “Do you have other bullies?” I don’t even know why I care but I do. “Yeah, but let’s stop talking about this. I’ve got a couple hours before my graduation and would like to enjoy it.” We headed up a small flight of stairs and into her living room, which had no tv.

“Come this way.” She said taking me down a hall. Opening a door she flipped on the light and there was a king size bed and a 50 inch tv on the wall, with two dressers and a night table. “Wow.” I said stepping in. “This is the guest room, hope it’s ok.” She said still dripping wet. “This is amazing, thank you.” I said dropping my bag on the ground. I turned around and she had her sweater off and was pulling off her shirt. “Do you like chinese?” She asked once she had her shirt off. “Umm.” “Sorry, I forgot most people aren’t used to my stripping tendencies. I’m gonna go put on another shirt.”

She left the room and I went to the door and watched her go into another room. Her belly button was pierced. Grace has no piercings or tattoos and this girl had several of both. She came back out and was wearing a white shirt, but you could see her black bra threw it. “So chinese my guest.” “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I like chinese.” She walked back into the living room so I followed. “Do you want a beer?” She asked going through another doorway and into a kitchen. “Beer? You’re not old enough for beer.” She scoffed and handed me one out of the fridge. “I don’t know you but I know you drank when you were my age, which wasn’t that long ago.” She said going back into the living room.

I followed as she plopped down on the couch, pushing a button causing a screen to go down. “How would you know that I’m not that much older than you?” I asked sitting down next to her. “Cause,” She turned to me taking a sip. “Have you seen your butt, it’s adorable.” She said. I don’t know why but I blushed. She took another sip. “Am I being too forward?” I turned to her taking a sip. “No, I like it. It’s different.” She smiled at me but it faded. “Yeah, different.” She said taking another sip. “Different is good you know.” “Is it?” She asked turning to face me on the couch.

“Is different good? Cause I’m certainly different and everyone treats me like an outcast. I’m a loser in people’s eyes.” She stood up. “I’m the little kid with money who can’t have any problems cause that would be wrong to have problems in my situation, but no one knows what happens here in this house or what happens in my mind.” She said but stopped when she ran out of breath. “How old are you?” I asked sitting up on the couch watching her. “Don’t you know you’re not supposed to ask a lady her age but I’m eighteen, I turned eighteen in september.”

“What’s your name?” I asked getting more and more curious the more I watch this girl. “It doesn’t matter, you don’t need to know it.” She said and turned to walk back to her room. “Wait,” She turned around and looked at me. “Maybe I don’t need to know but I want to know.” “It’s Paige, but most people call me Iz.” “Ok, I’m Jack.” She walked over and shook my hand, I wasn’t expecting it but. “Nice to meet you.” She said. “You too. Thank you for saving me today.” She laughed. “You didn’t need saving, just a little help.”

It was weird our hands touched but I wasn’t expecting it to feel like it did, it was unexplainable. “I’m gonna go to bed, I actually have to be at graduation to get my diploma.” She said and waved to me. “Feel free to use whatever, there’s towels in your room and your own bathroom.” “Thanks Iz.” I said as she smiled and stepped into her room and closed the door. She’s a strange girl, nice but strange. And I kind of liked it she reminded me a lot of myself. I took another swig of the beer. Then her door opened again. “Night Jack.” “Night.” I said back. She smiled and closed her door. I walked back to the guest room and looked through my bag for some clothes to change into.
