The Truth

For What It's Worth, I Think You're Beautiful

The next time we interacted, however, was three weeks later. “Hannah, right? You shouldn’t do that,” I heard a familiar voice say from behind me. I jumped, turning around and hiding the cigarette behind my back. I saw it was you and breathed out a sigh of relief.
“You shouldn’t snort coke,” I replied, taking another drag behind the school gym.
“Fair enough,” You said, shoving your hands in your pockets, walking over to me until we stood next to each other. I looked at the football field behind the school, forcing myself to not steal a glance at you. We stood in silence until I had to ask the question that burned in my mind for a month.
“Why does Jessie hate you?” I asked, giving in to looking at you. You chuckled, staring ahead.
“Let’s just say her and I go way back,” You replied. You looked at me and smiled softly. “But, to answer your question, she thinks I’m a bad influence on Jack.” I nodded, understanding her point of view. “What?” You asked laughing. “You think I’m a bad influence on Jack, too?” I smiled and shrugged.
“Well, are you?” I asked playfully, knowing Jack was fucked long before he met you. I think the reason Jessie was so messed up was because her life revolved around Jack and making sure he was okay. Jack Barakat was a seventeen year old boy with brown hair and the same eyes as Jessie. Actually, they were exactly alike, except Jack lost himself long ago in coke and punk rock. I knew Jessie loved her brother more than anything and it killed her to see him like that, but there was only so much she could do. “Kidding,” I told you. “I’ve known Jack since I was six years old. The poor kid’s more fucked up than I am.”
You nodded, your smile dropping. “He’s my best friend,” You sighed. “I mean, I get that I do the same shit he does, but...well, I think you know how bad he is.” I nodded, stomping my cigarette out. We were silent for a while until you looked at me. “You said he was more fucked up than you were. How are you fucked up?” You asked. I sighed and looked down at my converse.
“I guess I don’t do drugs or anything, but I’ve been cutting since seventh grade,” I replied. You nodded.
“Why? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“It’s fine,” I replied with a sad smile. “Well, I guess I just hate myself.” You turned to me and put a hand on my cheek, forcing me to look at you.
“Listen, I can’t make you stop but...at least promise me that whenever you feel like you’re not good enough, you’ll call me? Or if you just need someone?” You asked, writing your number on my hand. I nodded, not knowing if I would keep this promise. You smiled at me and I returned it. “I’m going over Jack’s after school, why don’t you ask Jessie if you can come over? We’ll hang out.”
“Sure,” I replied smiling. You gave me one last smile and began to walk away.
“Oh, and Hannah?” You said, turning around, walking backwards. “For what it’s worth, I think you’re beautiful.”
For what it’s worth, I think you’re beautiful too, Alex.
